Dolphins waived QB Pat White.

This will go down as one of the worst picks of the Bill Parcells era in Miami. White, the No. 44 overall pick in 2009, showed a complete inability to throw the ball at the NFL level as he sunk to fourth on the Dolphins' quarterback depth chart. If he wants to stick in the NFL, he needs to learn to play another position such as receiver. The CFL may be a better fit.

Quarterback Pat White was a second-round pick by the Miami Dolphins in April's NFL Draft. But he wasn't done being drafted. To White's surprise, he was selected in the 48th round of last week's baseball amateur draft by the New York Yankees.

White hasn't played baseball since high school, but he was pretty good back then -- good enough to get drafted in the fourth round of the 2004 MLB draft by Anaheim. He turned down the Angels and went on to have a stellar college career at West Virginia, presumably leaving baseball behind for good. But the Yankees like him enough as an athlete that they took a low-risk chance.

"The thought from our side was, at that point in the draft, let's draft him in case it doesn't go right with the Miami Dolphins or in the NFL," Yankees scouting director Damon Oppenheimer told FanHouse. "If he wants to be a football player, we completely understand and completely wish him the best of luck."

Oppenheimer said the Yankees were still trying to get White's phone number so they could connect with him and explain their thinking.

"Just let him know, if he does have an interest in baseball, we're here," Oppenheimer said. "It's probably a million-to-one shot, but if it happens, I'd rather it be for us than for Boston or somebody else."

White was a star pitcher and outfielder at Daphne (Ala.) High School but didn't play baseball at West Virginia. He told the Fort Lauderdale Sun-Sentinel this week that his focus was on football:
"I'm thankful and grateful, but my focus is as a Miami Dolphin football player. I'm playing football right now. That's my focus."
But hey, it was the 48th round. Why not take a shot?

It seems like an odd time to do so, but Craig Calcaterra of Hardball Talk reports that Alex Rodriguez has fired longtime agent Scott Boras. It actually happened a month ago. Jay Reisinger, who has acted as both A-Rod‘s and Andy Pettitte‘s counsel in dealing with PED matters, will take over as A-Rod’s full-time representative. I’m not sure how much this changes things, since Alex likely will never negotiate a player contract again. But as Calcaterra notes, Reisinger is “the point of contact between A-Rod, the union, the league and the Yankees. That has made him the defacto agent.”

Jeter may be the ultimate team guy, but two former teammates believe that when it comes to getting paid, his pride will demand that he get something approaching A-Rod money, regardless of what he hits this season.

"It's up to (the Yankees)," one former player said. "Knowing Jeet, he's not going to let an off-year, if it turns out to be an off-year, play a role in what he thinks he should get paid. He just doesn't think like that. He'll be more convinced than ever that he'll come back and hit .330 next year."

The second former teammate essentially agreed.

"The question is whether (Brian) Cashman and the others think this is the start of a decline," he said. "And if so, are they going to factor it into the negotiations or just pay him for being the face of the franchise all these years? Knowing Derek, he'll say all the right things, but he won't give an inch based on his numbers this season."

Obviously the Yankees won't want to go to war with Jeter, knowing it likely would be a PR nightmare.

"They're in a tough spot," one prominent agent said Tuesday. "Because the way he's hitting, the gap between his true value as an old shortstop without power and his Yankee-legend value is so enormous, I'm not sure how you bridge that gap without causing some hard feelings."
