  1. Sticky Thread Sticky: MLB Trivia, Who Am I?

They have one of these in the NBA thread and it's pretty fun. Now, we can put our collective baseball knowledge to the test. Just give a series of clues and if somebody guesses right, give them rep. Once a person answers right, they can then put up a riddle/trivia thing. That's just to keep it from turning into a clusterfuck. I'll start it with this: I'm in the Hall of Fame. I played for 6 teams in 17 seasons. I was voted to 7 All-Star Teams. I won the Rookie of the Year Award and an MVP. They were 9 years apart. I was born in Puerto Rico I was traded for Joe Torre. Have at it.

  3. Sticky Thread Sticky: Let's sit down and talk some statistics

This is an important thread. What I hope to accomplish is to familiarize all of you baseball fans with more meaningful statistics than the ones you constantly hear about on TV. I know some of you already know some of this stuff, but I want all of you to be using these formulas and statistics and I want to learn some things myself. First off, let me say which stats are either very unimportant or absolutely meaningless. - Batting average. I'm sure a lot of you have read a post where I completely discredited all importance to a hitter's AVG. I take it back. As far as using it to justify a player's worth is meaningless. But when you have a guy up with 2 outs and a runner at second, it's nice to know the odds of him knocking the guy in. Why I HATE hearing about BA? Because it doesn't take into account the player's power or how often a player is getting on base via a base on balls. Simply saying "yeah, he'll be good for us because he's hitting .300" is something you don't...

http://washington.nationals.mlb.com/video/play.jsp?content_id=11615635 Nyjer has officially lost it. Although what is pissing me off is when these guys say he shouldn't be stealing bases when the Nats are behind by so much. It was the 4th fricken inning and a team down can't battle back? 3. Arrow Yankees claim Lilly but Dodgers pull him back

The report suggests that at least one other team also selected Lilly. The 34-year-old Lilly has gone 5-1 since coming over earlier this season from the Chicago Cubs, where he was 3-8. Overall, he's got a 3.59 ERA this season and 125 strikeouts. He's making $13 million this season and becomes a free agent this winter. Follow Yahoo! Sports Rumors on Twitter at @markjmill. 4. Arrow Rangers consider adding Lowell again

MLBlogs.com reported that talks between the Sox and Rangers "heated up" about Lowell in recent days as Texas searched for a right-handed bat to come off the bench. The deal eventually didn't happen and the Rangers added Francoeur instead. Other folks that the Rangers were considering, according to the report, were Reed Johnson of the Los Angeles Dodgers and Ryan Spilborghs of the Colorado Rockies. The Rangers were set to add Lowell last offseason but then he failed a physical. He's gone .235 this season with four homers in 55 games. Francoeur has hit .237 with 11 dingers in 124 games. 5. Arrow Braves' Lowe gets cortisone shot

It turns out that one of its key ingredients - starting pitcher Derek Lowe - has been hurting for six weeks. The Atlanta Journal-Constitution is reporting that Lowe, who is 11-12 this season with a 4.53 ERA and 107 strikeouts, has inflammation in his pitching elbow and got a cortisone shot Sunday after a rough outing against the Florida Marlins. He's scheduled to start again on Friday against the Marlins and isn't planning to skip it. The paper also notes that 37-year-old who has been in the league for 13 years didn't bother to tell the Braves about his elbow hurting until three weeks after he started feeling the pain. 6. Arrow Reds' Edmonds retiring at season's end?

http://a323.yahoofs.com/ymg/ept_sports_rumors__53/ept_sports_rumors-16677330-1283250017_thumb.jpg?ymhtmsDDbkUXuOWaThe Cincinnati Reds traded for veteran outfielder Jim Edmonds earlier this month to help the team in its push to the postseason but now it's looking like Edmonds has given all he can: In the nine games he's appeared in for the Reds, he's hit .136 and knocked out one homer. Now he's on the disabled list and MLB.com has the 40-year-old talking about retirement after the season - his 17th -- ends. "I'm leaning toward shutting it down and being a family man again," Edmonds told the site. "I've made my mark. I've done as much as I can do as an everyday player." The four-time All-Star won a World Series in 2006 with the St. Louis Cardinals and also has eight Gold Gloves to his name. Follow Yahoo! Sports Rumors on Twitter at @markjmill.

  7. Arrow Alex Rodriguez returning Sunday

The New York Yhttp://a323.yahoofs.com/ymg/ept_sports_rumors__53/ept_sports_rumors-669954968-1283253666_thumb.jpg?ymjmnsDD_2EORlypankees aren't generally seen as a team that needs any help, particularly when it's got the best record in the majors. But it could use some help right now since another team, the division rival Tampa Bay Rays, happen to have exactly the same record. One of these teams will likely be the American League wild-card winner while the other will win the American League East. The Yanks have a member of the cavalry coming Sunday: Alex Rodriguez. The New York Post is reporting that A-Rod took his first swings in a while in the batting cage last night and is expected to be back in action on Sunday when he comes off the disabled list for a left calf injury. "He's good to go," hitting coach Kevin Long told the paper. Follow Yahoo! Sports Rumors on Twitter at @markjmill.

"We'll just wait and let you see how they decide to handle it. From my understanding, it's not going to be an issue, and he's going to make an adjustment and conform to how we like to have our players represented out there." 9. Sim League

http://www.dailysportspages.com/forums/showthread.php?76908-Sign-ups I am going to start a sim league, with the help of others. It should be a lot of fun but it is only successful and fun if all the teams are filled. This will be a lot better than any redraft we have done, and it should be able to be ran smoothly. Sign up, and choose your team before they are taken!

  10. Arrow Former Jays closer: GM "lied"

He spent 2008 mostly hurt and most of the last two seasons with the Triple-A Las Vegas 51s and he's not particularly pleased about that, according to the Las Vegas Review-Journal. The thing that has Accardo peeved is that he claims that general manager Alex Anthopoulos told him things would work out differently in 2010, the paper notes. "I was lied to a lot last year, where I was told one thing and something else ended up happening," Accardo told the paper. "That didn't sit well with me, but I turned (over) a (new) leaf and we talked and he told me everything's going to change, and really things haven't changed." Accardo didn't help himself early in the season when he ended...

  11. Poll Poll: Let's Talk Instant Replay, Again

Just saw a segment on ESPN about the use of instant replay during the 2010 Little League World Series. Here's how it broke down: Total Number of Challenges: 16 Calls upheld: 8 Average delay: 52 seconds So half of the naked-eye calls made by umpires that were challenged were wrong. That's huge. And 52 seconds is tiny. I saw this on sportscenter and they "threw it over to the guys at Baseball Tonight" and I expected the usual schtik from Kruk and friends about the "human element" and all that bullshit. But instead, Kruk announced his "conversion" from no replay to full support. He said that the LLWS made great use of instant replay, and it added another level of strategy for managers. The rule was that a manager could use a challenge, and, similar to the NFL, if the call was overturned, they could use another challenge, and so on. This makes it so a manager can't just throw a challenge out without a second thought whenever they want, it adds strategy because the manager needs...

  12. Arrow Red Sox unlikely to make deal on waiver claim Napoli

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim catcher/first baseman Mike Napoli has put 21 balls over the fence so far this season but the team put him on waivers. The Boston Red Sox have claimed him, but the Boston Herald reports that a deal is unlikely to happen between the two teams for the 28-year-old and Napoli will be pulled back by the Angels and perhaps traded this winter. The Herald reports the claim on Napoli was done mostly to keep him from getting selected by a rival such as the Tampa Bay Rays. "That's the way it goes, man," Rays second baseman Jason Bartlett told the Herald. "That's smart on their part. And obviously if we were in the situation they were in, we'd probably do the same thing. That's just being smart." Follow Yahoo! Sports Rumors on Twitter at @markjmill.

"I think I'm done,'' Coles told the paper. "I don't want to become one of those journeyman football players. I don't need the money. Coach (Rex Ryan) said I was doing well and they want to bring me back after the first game but I don't know. I don't think that's something I want to do."
