Edgar Alfonzo to Manage St. Lucie Mets

According to Laurel Phahler of TCPalm.com, Edgar Alfonzo will manage the St. Lucie Mets during the 2010 season. Alfonzo managed the Brooklyn Cyclones in 2001 and led them to a 52-24 record in their inaugural season in the Single-A NY-Penn League, and is replacing Tim Teufel who will be managing the Binghamton Mets this season.

…hat tip to Brian Costa of the Star Ledger for the link…

still no walks. He lacks patience and the main reason why he struggled last year in the majors.

Re: Mets Minors Thread | Fernando Martinez MVP of Carribbean Series

Mets 21–year-old OF Fernando Martinez was named MVP of the Caribbean Series, during which he hit .348 in 23 at bats with a double and two home runs. …that’s awesome… i’m happy for fernando… that said, he still needs to go to Triple-A, stay healthy and play… i would love to see him challenge Angel Pagan and Gary Matthews Jr. for the job in center field… but, in the end, regardless of how well he does in St. Lucie, i think it’d best for him to keep being successful and Triple-A, keep his confidence up, and then see where he’s at mid-summer…

    Speaking of minor leaguers…

To learn about the team’s top relief pitching prospects, such as Brant Rustich, read Mack’s Mets.

The 26–year-old Rustich is 7-5 in three minor-league seasons with the Mets, with a 2.77 ERA and 115 strike outs in 120 innings in 54 games.

Mack believes Rustich will begin in Double A, but has the potential for a mid-season call up.

    Around the minors 4/9/10

BUFFALO 7, SCRANTON/WILKES-BARRE 6: The Bisons' offense broke through for the first time in 2010 while erasing a 6-2 deficit. Jason Pridie's two-run single in the eighth made the Herd a winner. Buffalo's high-powered offense came through against the Yankee bullpen. Chris Carter cut the four-run deficit in half in the sixth when he tripled home Fernando Martinez and Mike Hessman. An inning later, the lead was down to one when ex-Met Royce Ring uncorked a wild pitch with Luis Hernandez on third base. The Bisons capped the rally with two more runs in the eighth. Carter led off with a walk and Mike Cervenak got himself on board with one of his two hits on the night. Two batters later, Pridie pulled a pitch through the right side of the infield to plate both the game-tying and go-ahead runs. First base prospect Ike Davis continued his torrid start with a long home run to center field. Davis has reached base in six of his first nine Triple-A plate appearances. He is 4-for-7 with two doubles, a homer and two walks.

BINGHAMTON 6-5, AKRON 7-1: The B-Mets split Friday’s games, falling 7-6 in the completion of the season opener, which was suspended due to rain, and prevailing 5-1. Righty Dylan Owen starred for the B-Mets in the regularly scheduled game with five no-hit innings. Owen, who was spot-starting for the injured Brad Holt, got off to an ominous start by issuing a pair of walks. However, he settled down and retired the next seven batters before walking Nick Weglarz. Center fielder Kirk Nieuwenhuis opened the scoring on Nick Evans’ sacrifice fly. Binghamton’s (1-1) big inning came in the third. Three runs scored as Evans once again plated a run with a bases-loaded fielder’s choice, Lucas Duda had a sacrifice fly and Marshall Hubbard had an RBI single. In the completion of the suspended game, the B-Mets made a valiant comeback after entering the day down 7-2 in the middle of the fifth. Binghamton quickly struck for a fifth-inning run against reliever Erik Stiller. Second baseman Hector Pellot singled and Nieuwenhuis followed with a double to put both runners in scoring position. Evans followed with a groundout to short that plated Pellot, to get within four. Catcher Shawn Riggans got the B-Mets two runs closer with a double off Stiller in the sixth. Riggans went 2-for-4 with a pair of doubles in the loss. D.J. Wabick got Binghamton within a run in the ninth with a run-scoring groundout. However, with runners at the corners and two outs, righty Neil Wagner got Zach Lutz to foul out to first to end the ballgame.

JUPITER 6, ST. LUCIE 4: The Mets jumped on Jupiter starter Brad Hand. Shortstop Jordany Valdespin led off with a single, then 2009 FSL homer champ Brahiam Maldonado stepped to the plate and launched his first longball of the season. Third baseman Richard Lucas followed Maldonado with his first homer as a St. Lucie Met making it 3-0. Sean Ratliff would cross the plate on an RBI single off the bat of Jean-Luc Blaquiere to give St. Lucie a 4-0 advantage before the Hammerheads batted. The Hammerheads scored one run in 3 1/3 innings against left-hander Robert Carson, who was making his Florida State League debut. Angel Calero, who relieved Carson in the fourth inning, yielded a leadoff homer to Paul Gran in the sixth. An inning later, Rhiner Cruz could not record an out. Cruz allowed two hits, walked a batter and hit another while uncorking two wild pitches. He left the game with two runs already in and runners on second and third and none out. Elvin Ramirez could not bail out the Mets as he surrendered a sacrifice fly and an RBI single, putting the Mets in a 6-4 hole.

SAVANNAH 5, WEST VIRGINIA 0: Gnats lefthander Jimmy Fuller blanked the Power (0-2) for six innings to keep the Sand Gnats (2-0) unbeaten. After a single and a Wilmer Flores error with one out in the first inning, Fuller retired the next 16 Power batters. His streak ended with two out in the sixth inning. Fuller struck out the side in the first inning and fanned six in his six innings of work while walking one and yielding two hits. West Virginia starter Nathan Baker shut out the Gnats through four innings. However, catcher Kai Gronauer’s leadoff walk in the fifth sparked a four-run frame. With runners at second and third after a Baker throwing error, second baseman Alonzo Harris drilled an 0-1 offering off the pitcher’s mound and into center field to give the Gnats a 2-0 lead. Center fielder Pedro Zapata then lined a double down the right-field line to drive in Harris. Rafael Fernandez’s RBI single brought home Zapata to make the score 4-0. Savannah tacked on its final run in the seventh, when Fernandez doubled home Zapata.

    Around the minors: 4.10.10

BUFFALO 2, SCRANTON/WILKES-BARRE 1 (11 innings): Mike Hessman and Chris Carter hit mammoth homers. Buffalo has won two of the first three games in their series against the Yankees, with all three games decided by one run. Carter's blast was the game-winner. The former Red Sox farmhand wasted little time in the 11th, driving the first pitch from reliever Jonathon Albaladejo to deep right field. Carter led Pawtucket last season with 16 homers and 61RBI. Mike Hessman hit his first homer in a Bisons uniform in the eighth to put the first dent in the scoreboard. The minor leagues active leader in home runs, Hessman hit No. 312 on a 1-2 pitch off Mark Melancon. Pat Misch started the game for Buffalo and tossed six shutout innings in a no-decision. Manny Acosta made his Bisons debut and kept Scranton/Wilkes-Barre off the scoreboard in the seventh and eighth innings.

    AKRON 11, BINGHAMTON 10:
The B-Mets rebounded from a 9-2 deficit at the end of the fourth inning to take a 10-9 lead, but saw that evaporate in the ninth against the defending Eastern League champions. Binghamton right-hander Jose De La Torre, who had retired the first five batters to face him, allowed a one-out single to Matt McBride, which signaled the end of his afternoon. Manager Tim Teufel summoned Roy Merritt to get the final two outs of the game. Merritt promptly surrendered a single to Beau Mills, which advanced McBride to third. Carlos Rivero followed with a single through the right side, which pushed across McBride with the tying run. Merritt ultimately gave up an RBI single to John Drennen that gave Akron (2-1) the lead. In the first inning, center fielder Kirk Nieuwenhuis squared up a Connor Graham offering for a leadoff homer over the right-center wall. First baseman Nick Evans and DH Marshall Hubbard followed with singles, and Evans was pushed across on a Lucas Duda groundout to make it 2-0 B-Mets. Akron was quick to answer, however, as the Aeros scored the next nine runs. Cord Phelps gave Akron its first lead with a three-run homer to right off Binghamton starter Scott Shaw. In the third, the Aeros knocked Shaw out of the game with five more runs.

ST. LUCIE 10, JUPITER 7: After breezing through four batters, Mets starter Scott Moviel ran into a little trouble in the top of the second. Back-to-back walks and a wild pitch later, the Hammerheads had runners on second and third with two out. Shortstop Chris Wade tripled in both runs, putting the Mets in an early 2-0 hole. The Mets stormed back in the bottom half. Second baseman Josh Satin led off with a double and scored on a one-out single by first baseman Eric Campbell. Campbell crossed the plate along with third baseman Richard Lucas on a three-run homer by Jean Luc Blaquiere. With the game later tied at 4, the Mets had a six-run frame. Shortstop Jordany Valdespin capped off the Mets scoring with a three-run home run to dead center, putting the Mets on top 10-4. Despite great run support, Moviel could not last through the fifth inning and qualify for the win. His line: four innings, six runs, five earned on five hits, four walks and four strikeouts. Jose Bierd and Manuel Alvarez combined to retire the last ten batters en route to the Mets' first win in 2010.

SAVANNAH 4, WEST VIRGINIA 0: The Gnats (3-0) blanked the Power for the second straight game. Gnats pitchers have now thrown 22 consecutive scoreless innings and have not allowed a runner to third base in their last 21 frames. Mark Cohoon, Michael Powers and Brandon Moore combined on the four-hit shutout. Moore was perfect over the last three with five strikeouts. The Gnats used four hits and two West Virginia errors to score three runs in the fourth inning. Shortstop Wilmer Flores fired up the rally with a double to left. He scored when West Virginia second baseman Jarek Cunningham kicked Juan Lagares’ infield single into no-man’s land in shallow left field. After a Cesar Puello single, Lagares scored when Power shortstop Bengie Gonzalez booted a sharply hit grounder from Gnats catcher Kai Gronauer. Third baseman Luis Rivera collected the only RBI of the inning by singling to score Puello.
