Did anyone remember Peter Gammons saying that Brad Penny was going to be a better acquisition then Burnett?

Veteran right-hander Brad Penny requested and received his release tonight in a move that clears a roster spot for reliever Billy Wagner and gives Penny time to join a new team before postseason rosters are set.

“I asked for my release and I got it,” Penny said.

Via MLBTR, the Yanks have some interest in the recently released Brad Penny. Penny, who the Yanks creamed in his last start with Boston, is due to clear waivers on Monday and would then be free to sign with any team for the pro-rated minimum. His numbers are ugly (5.21 tRA, 4.48 FIP, 5.61 ERA) but the Yanks probably figure he’d be an upgrade over Sergio Mitre and Chad Gaudin as the fifth starter down the stretch. "Derek and Minka are secretly engaged," an insider told Page Six. The Yankee captain and the actress are telling close pals to "save the date" for nuptials in the fall. "The wedding is being planned and will take place after baseball season is over," said our source.
One of Kelly's PR reps is denying the rumors, but then again Kelly also denied they were even dating so you can't believe anything that comes from her camp.

I never thought I'd see the day that Jeter settled down. Good for him and good luck.

Upon his request, Brad Penny was released by Boston today, and for some reason the Yankees seem interested.

The Yankees have an interest in veteran right-hander Brad Penny, who was released by the Red Sox late Wednesday night.

According to a person with knowledge of the Yankees' plans, the club doesn't know of an agreement between Penny and the Red Sox that he wouldn't sign with an AL team if they released him.
Besides that, there was this quote from Johnny Damon:

"He's got good stuff. His secondary stuff might need a little tweak but his fastball was electric, it cut and he hit his spots with it. Bring him here, why not? I love the way the guy competes."

I agree. Bring Penny aboard and lets see what he can do. If all else fails, we might be able to use him out of the pen.

Penny has a straight upper 90s fastball, maybe someone can work with him and teach him how to make it dance a little bit
