The bottom line is to WIN, not to carry the best player/cost ratio in the league. Yeah, 30 mil is a lot, but he helps us to our bottom line (WIN) better than anybody else available out there. If we let him walk, we're going to be a shittier team. Not to mention the hypocrisy of letting CK walk because we don't want to overpay him, while willingly trading for Agon, Beckett, and CC just two years prior in an effort to WIN. WE didn't get burned by those guys, we willingly took them on knowing they're overpaid.

This is not signing some unknown cuban guy or signing some old veteran on his last legs. We're signing a young pitcher who is at top of the game. Even if he regresses earlier than most people, and is only the 10th best pitcher in the league in 5 years, it means we still have a fucking ace on our staff! Which means he's still going to help us to our bottom line, WIN.

The only way he doesn't help us WIN is a catastrophic injury or he falls off a cliff. The latter is unlikely, and the former we'll be insured to soften the blow.

You obviously try to negotiate to get him for as economical as possible, but if at the end CK says give me 30 or walk, you tip your cap and pay him. The discussion to let him walk is some Frank McCourt shit

We're the Dodgers man, not the Milwaukee Brewers.

I agree with the sentiment of resigning him, I think handing him a blank check and not exploring all options in every scenario is how bad teams are born. I'd sign him, but having a conversation is not "Frank McCourt shit", it's a logical course of action.

bc there's potential to save up to $5M/year.who else will pay him $30M a year?alot of times teams end up bidding against themselves, the rangers did it with arod and got burned and then the yankees with arod the second time.the giants did it with zito and burned, yankees with tex, phillies with howard, mets with mo vaughn, etc.etc.any time you bid against yourself it's impossible to win

When we're talking about giving up the best pitcher in baseball, and probably the 2nd best pitcher in franchise history, all while in his prime, for a 1st round draft pick or a trade at the deadline, then we're onto some Frank McCourt shit.

I was looking at greinke's deal again, I think it's near $28Mper when you factor in the signing bonus so I'll soften my stance a little bit.
    I offer this:
    7/210 or 10/280
No-opt out clause and No-no trade clause on either offer.

If he wants to be here I assume he'll take it. If he demands that other shit...then I'd move to trade him if the return is there.

I disagree completely. I think the cheapest he's going to come is resigning. I also think comparing Clayton Kershaw to players like Ryan Howard and Barry Zito is foolish.

You can't hypothetically spout out a list of teams that would be interested in Kershaw because the amount of times the best pitcher in the game becomes available at 27 isn't often. I don't know who'd be interested in Kershaw and neither do you, so I won't argue that, but I'd think, you're way, way off in assuming there wouldn't be a ridiculous bidding war. I'd bet it would be 10+ teams deep.

Which is exactly why trading him in the offseason is not a viable option.your also tue dodgers and not the yankees.look at the monster contracts that the yankees are stuck with for over the hill vets...hell not one of their big money contracts they've willingly handed out has been a success(jeter, arod, tex, sabathia, pettite)

I think this stance has more legs than Phils Phanatic's does. Fair enough, just know if you're the GM and you do that, and then miss the playoffs in 2014 you're getting fired. And rightfully so.

no opt out I can agree with but might as well throw him a bone on the no trade since in just a few years he'd get 10/5 rights anyway

The other thing is,once again greinke had another big money competitor in on him to drive up the price,I don't see a team that can do that for kershaw

This is such an unprecedented deal because of his age and performance, he's so great it's gonna be huge.

The thing is that it'd be ideal to sign him to a short term deal cause of injury risk. But also, if we sign him to a 5 year deal lets say for 30 mil per, and he doesn't get injured and tears it up, then we're talking about potentially an even BIGGER deal when he is 30, 31 and paying huge money for his 30's

So, do you go for the 4-5 year deal and risk paying him huger money for his 30's, or go for the big 7-8, risk injury, and then maybe pay smaller in the 2nd huge deal you dish him.

Idk what to do. I truly believe we sign him to something outrageous, I mean theres nothing to get me to believe Ned won't resign him for something huge, but it's the moves that go around that that have me interested... Does he move an OF to help offset this? Which one? Hopefully Carl, but I guess never Kemp.

I really don't want to lose him...really. I hope I didn't come across that way, but I also expect him to help us out a little and not try to screw us so he can have more than anyone else. That just seems so Piazza like and fucked up to me. Business is business but baseball should/could be more than than that. This is his team...act like it.

Well CK walking wouldn't cause us to miss the playoffs because I'd replace him with the best pitcher available. ;)
I could replace those 16 wins. He's like Kuroda to us. This team doesn't score for him anyway, no matter how good he is. I still think $30M per is too much but whatever.

of those 10 teams who can afford to dish out $30M/year on kershaw?there's maybe only 5-7 teams who could legitimately do that with a clear payroll, yet alone with other monster deals on it already

You don't think there'd be several teams interested in throwing huge money to a 25 year old front line starter? Especially with: teams not usually letting this talent go to free agency AND teams getting more TV money, the list would be a lot larger than you think.

You aren't factoring into account that payrolls can easily rise with this new money coming in to teams. the Dodgers are far from the only team getting richer.

Why can't he give us a deal like Weaver did for the Anals? (not the same pitcher or amount obviously)
Weaver could've raked in way more as a FA. That's what franchise players do. Braun, Tolo, Cargo, Longoria, Rizzo, etc.) Why do we have to pay CK as if he is a FA from another team?
That's just greed IMO. We've technically overpaid him previously to make him happy unlike the Angels and Trout.

That's not really the approach I was shooting for; but they agreed to take on Crawford's entire contract knowing how much of a huge risk he was. If the Dodgers can feel comfortable enough to take on that contract, they should have no problem giving a big contract to the best pitcher in the game. My point is, the Dodgers have the money, and I really don't think it's that ridiculous of Kershaw to be asking around $200M. Felix and Verlander got close and he's better/younger than both of them.

Braun, Tulo, Cargo, and Longoria signed huge deals. Wouldn't call them "team-friendly". Only reason Rizzo's is a good deal is because Rizzo hasn't hit his prime yet.

Players don't owe their clubs anything. Just like TB said, if another company wants to hire us for more money/benefits than our current one, most of us would go to the other company.
