Pedro Guerrero, feared Dodgers slugger, reportedly 'fighting for his life'
by J.P. Hoornstra | Orange County Register — 2 hours ago

Pedro Guerrero, whose big bat powered many of the Dodgers’ best teams in the 1980s, was hospitalized Monday in the Dominican Republic. Initial reports offered conflicting information about Guerrero’s current state.

Miami-based journalist Antonio Puesan reported that Guerrero has died. Three other reports indicated Guerrero is alive, but in failing health. ESPN’s Renato Bermudez reported that Guerrero suffered a heart attack, while ESPN’s Enrique Rojas reported that Guerrero suffered a stroke. Hector Gomez of Deportivo Z101 wrote on his Twitter account that Guerrero is brain dead.

A spokesperson for the Dodgers had no information about Guerrero’s condition Monday night.

Guerrero, 60, played 15 seasons in the major leagues. As a Dodger from 1978-88, he made three All-Star teams and finished in the top four in National League MVP voting three times.

In 1981, Guerrero was named one of three World Series co-Most Valuable Players as the Dodgers beat the New York Yankees. Guerrero hit two home runs in the six-game series.

Guerrero was chosen to the 1981, 1983 and 1985 National League All-Star teams. He won a Silver Slugger award in 1982.

Guerrero’s 15 home runs in June 1985 equaled the Dodgers’ franchise record for a single month. In July 1985 he reached base in a franchise-record 14 consecutive plate appearances, two shy of Ted Williams’ all-time mark.

A knee injury derailed Guerrero’s 1986 season, limiting him to 31 games. In 1987, he batted .338 with 27 home runs and 89 RBI, and was chosen NL Comeback Player of the Year.

Guerrero was traded to the Cardinals in August 1988 and played his final major league game for St. Louis in 1992. Guerrero spent a portion of the 1995 season with the Angels’ Double-A affiliate, his final year of organized baseball.

Known for his elite bat, Guerrero also built a reputation as a hard drinker, drug user and partier off the field. He was arrested in Sept. 1999 and charged with attempting to purchase cocaine with the intent to distribute. He was acquitted in June 2000 after Guerrero’s attorney argued that his client didn’t understand what he was doing.

Guerrero acknowledged in a 2010 interview that his bad habits cut short his playing career. By that time, he said, he had quit drinking and was ready to return to baseball. He coached at various levels from 2011-2014 in the U.S. and Mexico.

Guerrero suffered a stroke in Feb. 2015. He recovered quickly and even took part in a “Legends game” at Dodger Stadium that May. In July 2016, Guerrero visited Dodger Stadium to throw the ceremonial first pitch prior to a game against the Colorado Rockies.

Guerrero was born in San Pedro de Macoris, Dominican Republic on June 29, 1956.

Loved watching swing the stick, cringed watching him play in the field (or attempting to slide).

Another player from the 80s whose career went off the rails because of the blow.

Former Los Angeles Dodgers and St. Louis Cardinals slugger Pedro Guerrero required an emergency brain procedure to address an intraventricular hemorrhage Monday night, a surgeon at the hospital where Guerrero is recovering told USA TODAY Sports.

Guerrero, 60, was in a coma at a New York hospital when he underwent a ventriculostomy, where a tube is placed through a hole in the skull to drain fluid. Once stabilized and treated, Guerrero was transferred to Lenox Hill Hospital, were he remains in critical condition on Tuesday, according to Rafael Ortiz, the hospital’s chief of neuro-endovascular surgery and interventional neuroradiology.

“The swelling on the brain has improved a little bit,” Ortiz said. “He’s now following commands and is understanding what we are saying. While he’s in critical condition, he’s doing much better than last night.”

Speculation about Guerrero’s health traversed the internet over the last several hours, including some reports that he had died in his native Dominican Republic.

“I know there was a lot of confusion,” Ortiz said. “I imagine there was some at the first hospital, which gave those close to him mixed messages on his condition. He did not have a heart attack. He’s not brain dead. There was never talk about organ donation. I want to straighten that out."

Guerrero had suffered strokes in the past, which Ortiz said required surgery at Lenox Hill Hospital two years ago. Neurosurgeon David Langer performed that procedure, and Ortiz said Guerrero had been in fair health before Monday.

Guerrero is breathing with the support of a ventilator and he’s on medication to further reduce the swelling in his brain.

“It could go either way,” Ortiz said. “He still recovering and could go on to live a meaningful life, but it’s too early to tell.”

Ortiz said Guerrero would undergo further tests if he continues to improve in order to determine what caused the intraventricular hemorrhage.

Ortiz said Guerrero’s chances of recovery would have been greater if he had first arrived at a hospital like Lenox Hill, which has extensive neurosurgery resources

I wonder if that is the origin of Zeus lighting strikes from heaven?
Or maybe a stroke is what happens when Thor drops Mjolnir on your head.

    Pedro's a brute man...A bull.
There's only two Dodger players I've ever heard were the most feared for an opposing pitcher to see come into the batter's box...One was Gary Sheffield, and the other was Pedro Guerrero.
    Kick some ass, Pedro.
