    By David Adler MLB.com
    7:46 PM EDT
The Giants announced Monday that senior vice president and general manager Bobby Evans will step down from his GM duties effective immediately. He will be reassigned with responsibilities to be determined.

"I want to thank Bobby for his tireless work on behalf of the Giants. He played an important role in our team's success throughout his tenure, which includes three World Series championships, four NL pennants and eight playoff appearances," Giants president and CEO Larry Baer said in a statement. "We look forward to new leadership to continue our historic record of success."

I guess the Rockies should be commended. They actually have a positive run differential now.

Does Ryu get a QO? If he would take 1 year at ~$18M, it might be worth it, he has been down right filthy, and if turns down to go elsewhere you get an extra pick & pool money.

100% gets one. He probably needs to be back next year unless it cuts into Machado’s money.

I mentioned this the other day that both Ryu and Grandal absolutely should get QO's. Honestly when the worst that can happen is they accept is a damn good problem to have. Ryu buys more development time for some of the young pitchers(Urias most importantly) in the system and Grandal would close the bridge year they need to get to Smith(or Ruiz if Smith's stint in AAA was a sign of things to come). Both have been worth more than $18M this season based on $ per WAR, so do it. Grandal is the best all around catcher on the market so he is probably getting a contract in the neighborhood of 4yrs $60-80M. I don't think Ryu gets a huge contact due to his injury history, but he is a Boras client and those guys tend to decline the QO. If both decline, I'll take 2 extra draft picks(3 if Kershaw opts out and leaves) plus the extra 1st rounder we will have from the last draft with our scouting department. That is the kind of ammo you need that could really help catapult a Top 10 farm system back into the top 5. I'll run with either scenario or a mix and match.

So somebody commented that the Rockies play PHI for four and somehow avoid Nola. They also won't see Scherzer in their final series, and missed Ray in the series before. Some baseball god is definitely smiling down on them.

It will be interesting to watch the Giants situation play out. I have a hard time seeing the Dodgers FO get pilfered again this offseason, but who knows. The Giants are one of those orgs that always seem to look within, so I would not be surprised if they go that route again. They are talking about how they are looking to venture more into the new analytical side of things, but probably not dive head first into it.

Personal feeling is this, if they sign a GM from within, then the plan is to tinker here and there and hope to catch lightning in a bottle with the last couple of years they have these guys under contract and do something similar to the Dodgers internal rebuild(spend big and compete until contracts run out). If they sign a GM from outside the org, then we should expect a top to bottom tear down. They are looking at a close to $150M cap hit in just returning players(I think, my math could be way off) and a lot of those guys are dead weight at this point or pricey for performance. It is funny, their roster is built with guys who are being paid pretty much on par with $ per WAR, but nobody is blowing that number out of the water and some very expensive players are shitting all over themselves. You can't win solely on $ per WAR, you need at least a few overperformers, but the Giants don't have that due to their barren farm system. It will be interesting to see if they ship some of these guys out and tac on some dough to try and get some prospect depth or if they continue to ride this wave out.

Even if Kershaw and Ryu left, they have 5 capable starters for 2019, obviously you don't want to go in with just 5 and I fully expect they will extend Kershaw, but it's an option.

You are pretty spot on with that number, $135M + MadBum $12M option = $147M

Will be interesting to see if they use him to try to off load money or acquire assets.

It has at the bottom an estimated 14.5M in benefits so I was not sure what that was taking into account, but yeah they have got a lot of money committed(I think that is arb raises). Bumgarner is said to want to stay in SF, so I wonder if they would really want to trade him. I have talked about how their farm had improved this season, but going over some end of the season reports and a lot of folks seem to be really mixed. Bart is a superstar in the mold of a Posey 2.0(fuck), but the rest of their system has a ways to go and is filled with mostly second tier starters and bench guys. It would be interesting to see what an outsider would think needs to be done with this team.

Speaking of interesting off seasons ahead, the Diamondbacks are another team to keep an eye on. The D'Backs are expected to lose FA's to be A.J. Pollock and Patrick Corbin. Pollock is probably not a HUGE loss as his inability to stay on the field has always been a factor, plus after coming back from an injury earlier in the season, he put up an abysmal .691 OPS over his last 69 games. A healthy Pollock will always be a "what could have been?" story for this club, but his 102 OPS+ over the last 3 years should be something they are able to replace if they are looking to compete.

Corbin is the real piece that could set this franchise back. He stepped into the role that Robbie Ray played behind Greinke last season giving the D'Backs a strong front two. Him leaving with Walker expected to miss the first half of the season AND likely no god like performance from Clay Buchholz to rely on in 2019 could make the D'Backs consider selling some pieces off as well. Goldschmidt being the last year of his deal could be the real factor here. They have a fairly weak farm system that had a good year in the lower levels. So they could look to sign him long term and if he says no, maybe they move him for whatever they can as well as Greinke too.

The D'Backs and Giants have the weakest farms in the division. The Padres have what is generally regarded as the best farm in baseball, while the Rockies and Dodgers are kicking around the Top 10. With young cores in place with both the top two teams in the West, it will be interesting to see how the two middle franchises go about the seasons to come.

Buehler, Hill, Maeda, Stripling, Wood, Urias, Santana, Ferguson and Stewart. Not to mention, expected 2019 arrivals of White, May and Gonsolin. Once again, they should have tremendous depth in the SP department, but a capable number 2 behind our new Ace would be nice. ;)

Things change in October and based on asking prices but in theory I’d

    Keep Machado, Kershaw and Ryu
Let Dozier, Madson and Yaz leave
Try and move one of Puig, Kemp or Joc and one of Wood and Maeda

What's your plan with Machado, Seager returning, and Lux charging in full speed ahead to gobble up another IF spot? Not that Lux will be on the big club early next year, but I'm assuming 1 part of the plan would have Belli in the OF somewhere..and Muncy?
