OF Jacob Scavuzzo announced that he’s joined the Padres organization. Scavuzzo was an intriguing Dodgers prospect after the 2015 season, but has never been able to truly capitalize on that breakout year. A lot of talent, but never able to put it all together. Now heads to SD to be with the scouting director who drafted him.

There has been a lot of chatter about the guys the Dodgers DIDN'T protect for the Rule 5 Draft in the MiLB world. I've seen a few different folks that think 1B/3B Connor Joe and UTL Drew Jackson both look like guys that could potentially stick at the end of a bench this season, while RHP Stetson Allie and his 102 MPH fastball getting a shot for a team not looking to win now. The thing that is growing worrisome is that the team did not protect 3B Cristian Santana. Santana has been slower to develop, but has still shown the skill-set to be an impactful MLB regular. He went into last season as many folks pick to being the next Dodgers star, but fell pretty flat until starting to put things together with a massive final month and a half. There are murmurs now that a couple teams have targeted him as a draft and stash with the potential that he has displayed. If he is snagged by another organization and stowed at the end of a bench in 2019, that would be a very disappointing loss for the franchise, in my opinion.

The Top 25 Prospects from the AFL, not really a surprise to see Keibert Ruiz make it. Dodgers elected to not send more than Ruiz from our intriguing prospect field. Jordan Sheffield had a solid run as he adapts to the pen. Only one reliever in the league made the list and it was a guy who just flat out dominated and he came in at #23, so not easy to crack in relief. Another dude who is a starter was used out of the pen that came in at 24, but he is likely to still be used as a starter for now.

    9. Keibert Ruiz, C, Glendale (Dodgers No. 2)
Ruiz's Fall League season ended two weeks early when he left to deal with a death in his family, but before he departed he showed why he's one of the game's best catching prospects. He's a switch-hitter who can handle the bat from both sides of the plate, should grow into power and owns solid receiving skills.

I would guess that we see him this year in September since he is on the 40 man now, but I would not be surprised if he's not up again til late 2020 after that and more of a regular in 2021. Catchers are notoriously slower to develop, so I could see the club using that excuse to keep him down longer so that they can get control of another year of his prime. He had a very good year in AA for his age and position, but it was still a bit away from it being the impact type of bat that the club is hoping for as there are still concerns about his power. I could see him getting April and May in Tulsa again with the promotion to OKC after that, or they may just go ahead and get him to AAA right away, but I think they may want to give Will Smith a solid look in OKC first. Either way, he is likely in for the Alex Verdugo treatment of mostly 2 years in AAA, which would probably be the best course for both the club and the player. Obviously this changes if he has a monster year in 2019 and turns up the power.

Really interesting article today from The Athletic about RHP prospect Marshall Kasowski. He was in a very serious car crash in college that threw off is career. He luckily walked away with only a concussion and the later need to remove his gallbladder after being hit from behind in his truck by another vehicle traveling over 100 MPH. He has used that to push him to never give up and to work incredibly hard at what he has done. Seems hyper-focused on improving his game and enjoyed a breakout season in 2018.

Something that is interesting in the article is it talks about his FB and why the Dodgers thought it was a truly special pitch. It is a true rising fastball with incredible deception, which is why even though he works in the low-mid 90's, he generates a ton of swing and miss. His marks on his offspeed pitches are low, but he talked about the development of his change as the season progressed and how he and the club recognizes that it too has a lot of deception to it. If he can develop those pitches a little better and fill the strike zone more, dude should be in the bigs this season.

The way you're describing his fastball reminds me of Sid Fernandez'.

Hopefully his belly is nothing like El Sid's.

So Lux has moved into MLB.com's Top 100 specs? Guess that happened a couple months ago, but I just now noticed because of this Jose Abreu rumor. Great leap for him this past season

I’d say consider the source on that one. Abreu doesn’t make a lick of sense for this team. Only way I could see it happening is some bigger, likely 3 team deal involving Matt Kemp.

The Abreu rumor is odd for sure because his is arb eligible and a FA in 2020. I like the power obviously. MAYBE he is attractive because the spec package would be a rental type therefore not as heavy and that is reaching. Yeah zero sense.

1st baseman on the last year of there deal have almost no value at this point. Goldy was an exception and he only brought in quantity filler guys(though I like the potential upside of Kelly and Weaver). Muncy was significantly better last year on both sides of the ball. So the only way I see these talks going anywhere is a multi team trade where Abreu is going somewhere else or the Dodgers saw something at the end of the year that they really did not like about Muncy.

Most definitely. I wasn't thinking we were actually getting Abreu or that there was legit interest, just reading the report and they were listing LAD's top specs as options for the WSox. Lux among others

Dodgers lost 2 prospects today with Connor Joe getting snapped up by the Reds in the Rule 5 and they plan to use him as a catcher. The Phillies took INF Drew Jackson and traded him to the Orioles. Both are decent players for an end of a bench and I could see at least Jackson making the year in Baltimore.

Expect Jeter Downs to drop into our 5th-6th spot for top prospects. Josiah Gray could come in as high as 15th depending on how much they value his impressive debut.

Or Kluber since the Reds and Indians had talks about him, so the Dodgers could have gotten wind of guys they were interested in. The other thing is, the Dodgers are incredibly thin at SS in MiLB. Lux and Estevez are projected to be better at 2B, so they could be looking for some depth at the SS position and feel Downs can figure it out. The Dodgers system has thinned out considerably over the last couple of years. It still has had some fantastic breakthroughs, but there is need for more high ceiling depth.
