Don't think Quackenbush gets the call and if he does, it will be for a real short stint. Sborz will probably be up again at some point. His numbers are badly skewed from an awful appearance early in the season, but he is one of the better relief options down on the farm.

Well.... was really wrong about the Dodgers approach in the draft going college bat, college bat, prep arm. They had been heavily linked to prep arms and prep SS's leading up to the draft, which made some sense on a upside play. From everything I am hearing and reading, the Dodgers ended up having a pretty damn good day for their position. Both Busch and Hoese have good upside for college bats and could be fast movers as well. Power bats that don't strike out a whole lot would be nice additions to our org. Lewis is interesting as he fits almost an identical mold to Dustin May. Lewis has more velo already than May had, so I think the team believes they can really build him up. They should be able to clean up his mechanics a bit too as they are a bit herky jerky for me. Overall, not a bad first day and fuck the Indians.

With that said, the D'Backs by all accounts had a tremendous day with their 7 picks. Their system just got a tremendous boost and I know a lot of the services absolutely loved their draft. We shall see if they can sign all of their guys, but this could cause some problems down the road.

Not sure what they are doing, but they just called their most recent update the "June Update" the rankings go like this:
    Ruiz 21
Lux has climbed to 25 from 30
May is now 46 from 52
Smith dropped from 83 to 82

If Gonsolin can get going, I could see him making this list.

Some interesting things are taking shape as some of the orgs top bats have begun to wake up, plus some pitchers are making some waves as well. BA has been all over our Rancho affiliate with write ups now on Devin Mann(more on him later), Josiah Gray and Jeter Downs this week. We also walked away from the draft with by many accounts what is being considered a top 5 draft class if they make the signings that are expected. Even better if they can somehow land the Milone kid(Doesn't sound signable).

    The Bats
Will Smith- Has homered in 4 straight games for OKC and has been on a bit of a tear after his demotion. If Austin Barnes continues to be so mediocre, I'll be curious to see just how long they keep Smith in AAA. One thing that might be interesting is if they choose to keep him down until September and then lean heavily on him in hopes that he can take advantage of teams not having strong scouting reports on him. Doesn't look like Keibert Ruiz is in the cards this year and probably next as well so the kid is going to have a shot to show he belongs.

Edwin Rios- Is FINALLY coming out of a year long power funk. He is still K'ing a whole heck of a lot, but the ball on the ground issues that were plaguing him after his ST injury last year seem to be falling off. He has reached his 2018 HR number already and has started to find holes a bit more often in the last 3 weeks. He is an important piece to the farm and could be a valuable bat in the stretch run.

Zach Reks- I really have no idea what this guy is all about. He gets no publicity from anyone and yet since joining the organization in 2017, this dude has been a very intriguing bat. Once a high avg guy that helped boost his OBP numbers with no power, Reks has unlocked the longball this year as he has now hit 18 HR's across AA and AAA levels while significantly upping his walk rate and maintaining his K rate. He had a slow start in AAA, but is coming off a monster stretch of games that has coincided with the clubs sudden turnaround(OKC is still terrible, but not as terrible as they once were).

Gavin Lux- Likely entering his final week in Tulsa. Feelings in the scouting world are that he is ready to move and the injury to Seager makes me feel that his promotion is all the more necessary. The AA All-Star game is next week, so it is expected that he will play and then move on. He has boosted his walk rate the past couple weeks after a free swinging start to the year. Someone on one of the services this week said that Lux is going to be a legit stud that will be mentioned in the same breath as Seager and Bellinger in terms of star power.... really hope that one comes true. He is also heading the Monday morning 10 pack from Baseball Prospectus, they said he looked really good manning 2B this weekend.

Keibert Ruiz- Also in the 10 pack was a very unflattering report on the continuing to struggle Ruiz. Sounds like he has put on some bad weight and his free swinging tendencies are getting him in trouble. They say he is still so young that it is not a time to worry, but his offensive profile has taken a step back here in the early goings of the season.

Devin Mann- Though he is in a bit of a rough stretch right now, Mann has begun to really turn some heads. Much like Lux and Reks, Mann has tapped into some of his unknown power and is in the midst of a breakout season. BA had a piece about him this week saying that he has probably jumped into the conversation of being one of the orgs better prospects. He is striking out a good bit more, but it is not a terribly dangerous rate either. Also, another RHH IF prospect is not unwelcome in this organization. One BA writer said that Mann is becoming "a legit dude" which means that they see big league potential out of him. Even though his slash line is not super pretty .262/.327/.473, his outs are said to be of the loud variety.

Jeter Downs- A common theme this year for Dodgers prospects is "after a slow start..." and Downs is definitely a part of that class. The new member of the Dodgers org has been on an absolute tear since the first week of May and is already 1 HR away from matching his 2018 total in almost half the amount of games. Along with his bat coming around, the club has moved him back to SS and while he is not thriving, he has shown plenty of promise according to a recent Baseball America piece. With at this point only 2 preseason Top 30 guys projected to graduate(#1 Verdugo, #30 Beaty), the steps forward by many of the clubs top bats, plus the intriguing draft, I would not be shocked to see the org fall back into the Top 7-10 range.

    Quick Arms Update
Jordan Sheffield- Gave up his first AA run this week, but is still in the midst of a huge bounceback season. He is finding the strike zone with a bit more regularity after his AA promotion and maintaining and impressive K rate. Stuff has ticked back up in a pen role. It will be interesting to see how long they keep him in AA as the orgs need could force their hand to give this kid a shot sooner rather than later. When drafted, most scouts felt his upside was that of a high leverage reliever.

Josiah Gray- A lot of folks at the time were highly critical of the Dodgers-Reds trade in terms of what the Dodgers got back. Now with a few months under our belts, it is looking like this was an incredible nab by the club. Puig is having an abysmal season, Kemp has been DFA'd, Wood hasn't played yet this year and Kyle Farmer has plummeted back to earth after a hot start. Now the second piece of the Dodgers prospect haul is in the midst of an incredibly impressive season. After dominating the LoA MWL, Gray got the quick move to HiA Rancho. He had a rough first outing and after that, fell right back in line with some impressive showings. He matched up blow for blow with Mackenzie Gore this weeked, viewed by many as the top pitching prospect in baseball. While Gray's secondary stuff was not on point, he impressed scouts with the command of his fastball and using it to overmatch the competition. He was the third member of the Quakes to get a big BA write up this week and they came away very impressed. He only gave up 1 ER over 7, but it was due to a badly misplayed pop fly double. He was able to maintain his FB velocity into the 7th inning where he ended the night on back to back K's on 95 MPH FB's. Sounds like at worst, he really should be a solid pen option, but if he can improve more on his secondaries, he could be much much more.

Super stoked on Gavin Lux and mildly excited about Will Smith.
Our current MLB 2B and C situations are garbage.
If Gavin can be what Seager was in 2015 for us down the stretch....(aside from not covering 3B...)
Even if Smith can just muster a 100 Wrc+ and play defense this season, I'm all in. Enough with feeble Barnes. Give me an average bat.

What does all this mean in terms of acquiring TWO elite relievers? Cuz if we don't...we losin' in 5.

Sounds really good. And don't forget that Homer Bailey kid. How's he faring and when does he get called up? ;)

All kidding aside, this trade has already benefited us with addition by subtraction, but if either Downs or Gray pan out, it's going to be a steal. If they both do, then it's an all-out raping.

It is good, also should say DJ Peters is starting to hit the ball a bit better as well. The new draft picks are intriguing as they are IF depth that we sorely needed entering the season. Omar Estevez coming back healthy would also give the club more room to move guys if he is still anything close to what he was before. One problem is the clubs top pitching prospects entering the season are taking their lumps. May has been very up and down, White is coming off of two terrible starts after it seemed like he had figured things out in AAA, Santana is also on the up-down train and Edwin Uceta has been crushed since his promotion to AA. The club only has two starters that have been truly impressive so far and that is Gray and Gonsolin(in a very small sample size). This in turn has really hurt the Dodgers for trades as it limits what they could offer and my guess is that May and Gonsolin are still very much untouchable.

The price for elite relievers on the trade market has become insane, making the whole Kimbrel fumble even more infuriating. I would guess that they go after one back end reliever and some under the radar guy, ala Floro from last season that may not have a prohibitive asking price. The club certainly has the pieces to make a deal though, without giving up Lux, May, Gonsolin, Ruiz or Smith. Could also potentially pull off keeping a Gray, but it could be tough to land anyone impactful without losing at least a White, Santana, Peters, Downs, Estevez or Rios at the least.

Hah! I nervously looked up Homer Bailey's #'s when I was writing that worried he was still doing well after an ok start.... turns out that was just a brief stretch.

this is what makes it tough
in years past we didn't have the prospects to use in trades
now we do but are apprehensive about dealing them
    and rightfully so
no one wants to trade the next bellinger

At some point they will have to give up something of consequence to win the WS.

Obviously you keep the Seagers, Bellingers, Kershaws, etc when they come along. Lux is in that category now too probably.

But idgaf about regretting Ruiz, May, Smith, etc. if it means we win it all. Those are fringe tier 1 guys you can part with to win a WS.

The Red Sox gave up Moncada to get Sale off the top of my head. Other teams make the sacrifice. Time to grow a sack.

Dodgers first round pick Kody Hoese is off to a mediocre start to his Dodgers career. Through 3 games he is 0-2 when making an out. When he hasn't gotten out, he is hitting a putrid 7-7 with 4 2B's, HR and 2 BB's. All in all, he is off to a .778/.818/1.556 triple slash line. He's supposedly hitting the ever loving shit out of the ball.

    • Gavin Lux was awarded first half organizational MVP by BA. For how great of a year he is having, I am really shocked at the low level of attention that he is receiving. Wonder if the feeling is he is still a year away, so they have not gone all out on him yet.
    • Tony Gonsolin went 5 yesterday, matching his season high which he hit in his second start of the year before getting injured. Gave up 5 H, 2 ER, 1 BB and 9 K's. It was his 6th start since returning and they have added an inning each of his last 3 starts. The strikeouts are a welcome return as he had not been missing a whole lot of bats outside of his first start of the season.
    • Edwin Rios finally looks like he is coming out of it. He is having a monster June which saw him add his 6th HR of the month last night. Some other promising signs are the K's are coming WAY down and he is walking a bit more(still shit numbers there, but at least they are less shitty). Him getting all the way back with the said improvements he is having on defense as well could be a huge boost as a potential Corners UTL type or good trade piece for an AL reliever.
    • Speaking of the clubs big power prospects figuring things out, another guy starting to put things together A BIT is DJ Peters. Like Rios, his power numbers have ticked up each month and the strikeouts have come WAY down. There is an adjustment period with a new swing, so maybe he is getting a bit more comfortable.

    Tulsa Update
    • Dustin May had a fucking night... 7 IP, 2 H, 0 ER, 0 BB and 14 K's! May has not exactly been great this year, but that was a hell of a performance. Even with his struggles, he has climbed the rankings steadily this season, so my guess is that he is working on some of his weaker points and this is costing him a bit. Last 3 starts have seen him go 6.2, 7 and 7.
    • Today (if they play) is expected to be the final game for Lux and his tenure in Tulsa. Murmurs are that he will be promoted after the AA All Star game this week!
    • Jordan Sheffield has been incredibly impressive in his run with the Drillers. There is some speculation that he may not be around there much longer as well. It is probably not happening tomorrow, but I could see them trying to get 20 innings under his belt at the level and if he continues to throw like he has, a promotion should be an easy decision. Scouting reports on him have always been that he would move quickly once he went to the pen, but the org kept trying to force him to be a starter in hopes that his command/control woes would work themselves out to make his multiple plus pitch arsenal a front of the rotation threat. Now that he is in relief and dominating again, he could give the Dodgers bullpen a huge boost down the stretch.

    Couple of notes:
Diego Cartaya was promoted from the DSL to the AZL
Alex De Jesus was promoted from the DSL to the AZL
Kody Hoese is to be promoted from the AZL to Rookie- Ogden
Niko Hulsizer was promoted from LoA to HiA

With AA All star game this week, we could see some more movement come Thursday. Hoese, De Jesus and Cartaya are said to be looking very impressive in the early going and there is some belief that all 3 will find their way to the Loons at some point this season. That would be incredible jumps by these guys and a welcome site if they succeed.

Really psyched to see what Gonsolin does later tonight. CKWG what can you tell us about Zach Reks? He's mentioned in the article about Gonsolin on dodgers.com. I know Cartaya is still years away but how about our catching depth! Can't believe it's rise to prominence in such short order.
