The Dodgers FO have made moves that were uncomfortable as they have traded multiple top 100 prospects over the years in Jose De Leon, Grant Holmes, Franklin Montas, Willie Calhoun and Yusniel Diaz to name a few. The last two were used to acquire arguably the best available players at the deadline both years. I'd also like to add that they moved more than a few others that were coming into their own as intriguing specs at the time of their trades. That just shows you how those trades do not automatically equal World Series championships. So insisting on trading Top 50 prospects for relievers with one or maybe two years left on their contracts does not make a whole lot of sense. There are also not really many decent options out there for the bullpen, so finding answers from within may be the best choice at this point outside of a Vazquez or Smith since relievers are quirky individuals anyway. There are some other interesting names out there, but I wouldn't come close to suggesting a Top 100 spect for them like Watson, Greene or Doolittle due inconsistency and/or injury risks. Also, yeah you can trade the #1 prospect in the game(as there were signs that Moncada was being vastly overrated leading up to the trade), like when you are acquiring one of the best pitchers in baseball that is also signed to an incredibly team friendly contract for 3 more years. That type of elite player is not on the market right now, but if there was I probably would be ok with moving Lux.

Josiah Gray dominated again tonight, going 6.2, 4 H, 7 K, 2 BB. After the hiccup in his first outing at Hi-A, he has been a dominant force including 7 straight starts of 2 ER or less. ERA is now sitting at 2.53, even with that .2, 3 ER outing.

I don't really disagree with you.

We have given up quality prospects to acquire good players. By 'consequence' I just mean we might have to give up someone that hurts. De Leon, Holmes, Calhoun, and Diaz did not hurt. Put a dent in our depth? Sure. But there was no potential regret, imo. They weren't Buehler, Urias, Seager, Bellinger, Kershaw type prospects. That doesnt make them useless. If someone even turns out to be a league average player, that is value. But they were a lower tier nonetheless.

If the Nationals somehow lost 15 in a row (instead of turning it around like they have. Bastards), and Scherzer was available, I'd say the organization should give up someone who hurt. Even if SP is not a weakness, the dude is a horse and one of the best there is. He could carry a staff through October and dominate.

Trading a huge prospect does not equal automatic success or a WS. Correct.

Contract status, the other team's needs, which prospects are being discussed, and who is even available etc. all matter. That is a given.

But there is something called the 3 decades of failure tax at some point. If the Pirates engaged us and Vazquez truly was the difference in winning it all or not, bye bye somebody who hurts to see gone. Because it has been 30 years.

    Idk.

The only first rounder that has not signed yet is Dodgers #31 pick Michael Busch. They have to sign this guy or they just full blown lose the pick. There is a little over a week left to sign your draft picks, but it would be nice to if they could lock this kid up sooner and get him some AB's.

De Leon, Holmes, Calhoun, and Diaz may have not hurt. But you never know when you're going to deal the next Pedro, Konerko, or Santana. However, after a 30 year drought, playing to win tomorrow is trumped by playing for today. Can't let this opportunity to win this year escape.

    Pedro hurts bad.

Santana was stupid money grubbing BS but it doesnt hurt me.

Konerko...meh. If the Dodgers just finished the job a couple times between 2004-2017 I wouldnt even care. Kenerko was a great player. Great. But I just don't think about him often.

I will admit. This is subjective as hell.

I will say this though. Imagine if we did not trade Konerko, kept Beltre, and Utley signed with us when he was drafted.

looks like we're nearing a deal with our #31 pick, which essentially means we signed everyone we needed to

Still need to sign 2nd rounder James Lewis and then the Hail Mary would be Brennan Milone. Aside from that, we'd be good to go!

    Name To Watch:
    - Miguel Vargas has been on an absolute tear. He was on some watch lists entering the season with an incredibly advanced hit tool. He will play this whole season at the age of 19 and he has been putting up some impressive numbers. He has a smooth swing that generates a lot of line drives, but little to no power which is what had kept his stock down. Over the last two weeks, he has started to hit the ball out of the park and saw an almost immediate promotion from LoA to HiA after that. His K rate has been incredibly impressive and like other Dodgers intriguing bats of late, walks about as much has he K's. The word on him is if the power comes, he is not only an interesting prospect, he could be a monster one.

There has been a rise of the RH bats in our system, which is sorely needed with all of the bats on the big league roster and among our top rated specs. Vargas, Peters, Estevez, Smith, Downs and Santana are all pretty important for the future.

Baseball Prospectus Top 50 has had it's midseason update and umm.... fuck it is interesting.

    #7 Dustin May
Why he’ll succeed: The Gingergaard continues to quickly climb the minor league ladder. He’s filled out, added to his stuff, and basically done all the things we could have hoped for after somewhat aggressively giving him that nom de guerre shortly after the 2016 draft. There’s a full complement of power stuff now, and top-of-the-rotation upside.

Why he might fail: May hasn’t ever truly dominated a level like some of the other top pitching prospects to either side of him on this list. He’s always been good, and he’s almost exclusively faced older hitters. But this is a case where the performance hasn’t quite matched the profile so far. May might just be a durable, above-average major league starter.

    #11 Gavin Lux
Why he’ll succeed: He’s made consistent improvements to his offensive game since the beginning of the 2018 season, unexpectedly surging to become a top global prospect. He was already a polished defender, likely to stay at the six, but certainly capable of handling other positions. He always showed an advanced plate approach for his levels, too. But now, we expect an above-average outcome in both hit and power as well, and he’s already knocking on the door of the majors

Why he might fail: There’s low outright failure risk here, even for this section of the list. If he comes in a little low on hit and power, he might settle in as “just” a pretty good baseball player. If you consider it a failure for a player ranked this highly to lock in as a long-term regular instead of a star, well, I guess that would be a failure.

I was a bit shocked to see this jump by both. Prospectus I believe has loved May for a while since his fastball has always been so tough to square up. I think May with his bowling ball fastball will have more success once he gets into a scenario of better advanced scouting.

I am crazy fucking busy as work decided this past month was an ideal time to load my plate with the most clients I have ever had at one time and my wedding/honeymoon are only 9 days away now. So I am not going to do an in depth rundown with links, but midseason top prospect lists are dropping left and right. Lux, May and Smith are seeing HUGE boosts as Lux and May are seeing regular top 10 accolades with some legit write ups mostly saying that Lux is star and May is a front of the rotation pitcher. Gray isn't getting any attention, but I expect him to break into the Top 100 by the end of the year. The Dodgers graduated a stud in Verdugo, but outside of a couple of major trades or surprise promotions, I would not be shocked if at the end of the season the Dodgers are a Top 5 org again. May, Lux, Smith, Ruiz, Gray, Hoese, Downs and Gonsolin could all creep into Top 100's in the offseason. Peters is off to a great start in AAA and a monster 2nd half could see him leap back in the charts as well if they feel he is figuring out his new swing.
