So I am sitting here watching The Natural while I wait for the HOF announcement. With this monumentally shitacular offseason, maybe we can get a discussion going about something else. What is everyone on here's favorite baseball movie?

I'll go first. So I have Moneyball, Major Leagues 1 & 2, A League of Their Own and Bull Durham all on a fairly regular rotation, but Mr. Baseball is hands down my favorite of the bunch. I like the movies that are naturally a bit more realistic with the play on the field and I think Mr B captures that better than about every one of these AND ties in an aspect of how the game is played in an environment that we were all pretty unfamiliar of, or at least were of at the time of its release.

I voted Major League just because of the LOL's. When I was a kid (probably 8-12 years old) I watched The Natural on a loop for some reason, probably watched it 50 times. 42 is a great movie, especially for Dodgers fans. The Sandlot, A League of Their Own, and Bull Durham are classics. For Love of the Game surprised me when I watched it, I don't know what I was expecting but it was much better than I was expecting. 61* is good too. And shout out to Naked Gun.

I have to pick the Natural. I guess in the way they combine the stories and characteristics of some legendary baseball players into one character, the movie becomes epic in nature.

The more I watch Bull Durham, the less I like it because, in a way, it’s really not about baseball. It’s more the story of 1 minor leaguer and how cruel fate can be.

Same with Field of Dreams, but I can watch this movie over and over again because of my sons. It’s really about the father son dynamic than anything else.

You can't go wrong with Major League. That shit still cracks me up and has one of the best realistic takes on the game. Granted you can't do everything that Rachel Phelps did, but it was still awesome and holds up to this day. Totally forgot about *61 and I just watched that not all that long ago.

I tend to be more fond of movies I watched as a child.
Bull Durham and Major League were R rated (Bull Durham was especially mature) and I didn't see them until I was an adult.

While I understand they are modern classics, they do not make my list.

    My Top 5:

    1.
Field of Dreams: It's got mystery, fantasy, twists, and timeless messages about forgiveness and sacrifice. The father/son element makes it especially great. "Hey Dad? Wanna have a catch?" is as good as it gets. The music score is outstanding. I feel like every tear is earned in this one, whereas movies like For the Love of the Game really ham it up in a way that either feels corny/cliche, or doesn't feel properly set up and paid off... if that makes sense. Every character had something to lose in this movie (Ray, his farm. Monnlight, his dream of playing in the Major Leagues, etc.) and those dilemmas were consequential to the plot. Only until Ray is at the end of his journey do we actually grasp what the story and message was about. Which is rare. Most movies are really predictable.

    2. Bad News Bears: The entire cast is great, which is not always the case for kids. I like how gritty it was shot (camera off the tripod, grainy film) and the dialogue was on point.

    3. A League of Their Own: Really cool story. I like period pieces (Irish...).

    4. Moneyball: Atypical story. Relevant. Interesting. Great actors.

    5. The Sandlot: Someone born in the mid 80s to early 90s shouldn't have to explain loving the Sandlot. Our childhood was an unhealthy dose of Robin Williams, Tim Allen, Nickelodeon, and corny baseball movies. The Sandlot is actually well made though and can stand up there with other "legit" movies.

    Guilty Pleasure Top 5:

    1. Angels in the Outfield: I actually LOVE this movie to this day. "It can Happen"
    2. The Benchwarmers: I think this movie is hysterical.
    3. Hardball: Man crush on Keanu since Speed.
    4. Fever Pitch: Drew.
    5. Rookie of the Year: "Funky Buttlovin'"

I have definitely heard this take before in regards to Bull Durham. It seems that as people tend to watch it over again as they get older, it starts to hurt a bit more.

A League of Their Own is a good watch. Hanks knocks it out of the park, the story was great, the baseball was legit and Penny Marshall did a masterful job directing.

Moneyball does a great job of setting a foundation to care about analytics and I loved that. Also it culminating with "The Streak" was perfect and I remember all the fun I had watching that unfold.

    That's actually a great point
Sometimes movies get the mechanics of the game totally wrong...where it is unbelievable that the actors are actually playing.
    Or they botch obvious rules.

Yeah, that will ruin a movie for me. I mean Summer Catch is just one of the worst contributors to that and as much as I LOVE Bull Durham, I always hated how fucking horrendous Tim Robbins looked on the mound.

    Thats an awesome movie.
It was how I imagined it was for Kirk Gibson when he came to the Dodgers.

The worst are the Babe Ruth movies with William Bendix and John Goodman.

Definitely worth it. Also has a fun appearance from another baseball movie icon and some of the better realistic on field banter you will find in a baseball movie.

I can't watch Bull Durham any more. I do like:

    Mr 3000
    Bad News Bears
    Little Big League
    Major League
28 Days (Viggo the A/A pitcher)

Feat Strikes Out, about Jimmy Piersall, with Anthony Perkins in the title role, was as far away from how a bb player moves as it gets. I don't think 'ol Norman Bates ever played an inning in his life.
He really threw " like a girl", literally.
    Girls back then, anyway.
