Of course everything he says makes sense but for some reason this statement reached out and grabbed me. I'm not taking sides or implying anything at all, I just want to point out that this is the kind of statement that sometimes finds it way back to haunt you. It may never happen, but the "researching the character of all the added players" comment could certainly bite him in the ass one day. Again, I'm 'just sayin'.

And for fucks sake Irish, quit fucking with the threads and titles. By the time I typed that the fucking thread didn't exist anymore.

The "Kemp" thread has had what, six different fucking titles now? Why can't they just stay?

Now that everything is up to date (except Anderson) the amount of money that will be coming off the books after 2015 is potentially staggering.

Wilson: $9.5M (Will be $9M if/when someone signs him for the minimum)
    League: $7.5M
    Rollins: $10M (Phillies retained $1M)
Haren: $10M (be it salary or just cash)
    Billingsley: $3M (buyout)
    Uribe: $6.5M
    Kendrick : $9.5M (would prefer to re-sign)
    Anderson: $10M
Greinke: $25M (if he is healthy he will opt-out)

    Roughly $91M.

Now that the structure of the Kemp payouts is different, this will be a different number.

Kemp: $2.9M (decrease in payout from $6.4M (originally) to 3.5M)
    Gordon: ~$2.5M

So it could be somewhere between $95M and $100M.

Except half of those guys don't qualify as talent.

not the point Knock... too many teams aim only to solve for lesser salary and lose the talent.

Pertaining to that particular list I'd welcome Greinke again, Uribe again until a better fielding clutch hitter can be found, Haren again as a #5 SP and Bills again so long as a roster spot wasn't required for better talent.

soooo... it must be the other half that you're whining about??

A whine? I’m agreeing with the nerds. If anything you’re the one whining that they might not resign these guys.

If Grienke opts out, it will be a blessing in disguise. At some point he will break down, and we don’t want to have any dollars tied up to that contract.

And yes I was referring to the other half as talent.

Greinke turned 31 in October. He has four more years and three after the 2015 season. He is owed two years of 26 million and one of 25 million. How much and for what terms would he be getting next year at age 32 to beat the 77 million guarantee from us? would his personality take that risk?

    Yes.

If Shields gets 105 and Scherzer gets 185.

    @Knock, I doubt it.

Greinke has always come across as smarter than the average bear; AND he's played for losers for enough years to value the potential of a Winner; so "IF" we can go deeper into the playoffs this year I think that he's going to be happy to be part of the baseball family he holds in high esteem.

It's true that he could go other places and be a #1 SP but go nowhere.. so I think he'll be happy to stay.

And I, for one would be happy to keep him as our #2

but Jon Heyman said at the beginning of the Winter Meetings that Greinke told him that he'd be opting out after next season and watching Lester's/Scherzer's contract situations closely. so unless Greinke goes back on his word..there you have it.

Not doubting Heyman (but he is very doubtable), but a lot could happen between now and then. If the Dodgers actually do finally win a WS, he might want to stay for a chance to make it two in a row. He could be injured seriously enough to lessen his value on the market and thus make it beneficial for him to stay put. Or he could simply have a change of heart. And for my money, Grienke would be going back on Heyman's word. I don't think he promised anything.

meh. i won't be losing any sleep over Greinke's decision. too many other high caliber arms in next year's free agent class..many of them younger than he is by multiple years. Samardjiza, Price, Porcello, Cueto, Zimmerman, etc. plus, Urias isn't too far away anyway.

    Except he still said this:

    http://espn.go.com/los-angeles/mlb/...os-angeles-dodgers-deal-money-was-no-1-factor

""I could play for the worst team if they paid the most," Greinke said in an interview with CBSSports.com."

I don't think that has changed at all.

like you said before Knock..if Greinke indeed opts out it'll be a blessing in disguise for the Dodgers. some dumb team will tack on a couple more years and agree to pay him big money through his age 35 and 36 seasons while the Dodgers move on to somebody younger, possibly just as good or better.
