Mitch Kupchak: Kobe Bryant 'indicated to me that this is it'

Los Angeles Lakers general manager Mitch Kupchak said star guard Kobe Bryant has told the GM that the 2015-16 season will be Bryant's last with the Lakers.

"He has indicated to me that this is it," Kupchak said Thursday in a radio appearance with SiriusXM NBA Radio.

Bryant is scheduled to make a league-high $25 million in his final contract season -- his 20th -- with the Lakers. But there's speculation that Bryant could play beyond next season, and Bryant said he hasn't ruled out that possibility.

"I know I can't comment on free agents," Kupchak told Cowherd. "But I mentioned earlier, we have two things: No. 1, we have a rookie [Jordan Clarkson] who had a good year who's a ballhandling guard who can also, I think, be in the backcourt with another ballhandling player. I think that would work.

"But the other thing we have is, we do have a lot of cap room. We feel like we do have to be aggressive. Getting the [No. 2 overall] pick takes a little bit of the pressure off to do something borderline this summer [in free agency]."

Artest had been on 4 teams before he got to the Lakers, been in a brawl, been an alcoholic, etc. and he helped us immensely.

if Carroll can be had on the right kind of contract, fire away.

Think the lakers can pry Middleton out of Milwaukee for 13-14mil? He's my hope for for the SF spot next year. One of the best 3 and D guys in the league IMO. He can also slide down into the 2 spot so we can make a play for Durant.

For one season he helped. Mostly an ineffective distraction after 2010. I like Carroll but too many teams will be after him. How come nobody is talking about Afflalo? LA native, can play D and shoot the 3. Should come cheaper than these other guys after not fitting in awesomely in Portland. Dude has been a good player for a while now.

 

I like Tobias Harris. (unless Butler is somehow possibly leaving Chicago)

 

Artest was good 2 out of the 4 years, but he was also older than Carroll is now when we signed him.

Afflalo's a good player, but he's not a free agent.

 

Nic Batum, Danny Green and Gerald Green are other interesting options at SF.
