    For hacking them?
I guess it's me, but WTF can a team learn by "hacking" another?
Who they want? Guess this is going right over my head.
Isn't team info pretty much out there for anyone who wants to spend the time to look it up?
And an AL team at that?

Both teams had similar databases with lots of scouting and analytic information. The guy who made it in St. Louis left for Houston to become the GM (Jeff Lunhow) and apparently some key passwords remained the same when he/they made a similar database. Doesn't sound very smart. But the Cardinals hate Lunhow so I guess they felt vengeful.

I don't know if they did it for these reasons, but you could use the info to look at free agent offers so you can always top them, trade offers to see what other offers are being sent for certain guys, and you get double the access to scouting reports for all players since you not only have your own scouting database but now have access to another team so you can see info from a wider database

The St. Louis Cardinals are being investigated by the FBI for allegedly hacking into networks and trying to steal information about the Houston Astros, The New York Times reported Tuesday.

The St. Louis Cardinals are reportedly being investigated by the FBI for hacking into the Houston Astros' database by using passwords associated with Houston GM Jeff Luhnow, a former Cardinals executive. AP Photo/Pat Sullivan
According to the Times, the FBI and Justice Department officials have evidence that Cardinals officials -- who were not identified -- allegedly tapped into the Astros' database and had access to statistics, scouting reports and internal discussions about players, trades and other proprietary information.

Major League Baseball, the Cardinals and Astros all issued statements Tuesday saying they have cooperated fully with the investigation, which started last year after some information was posted anonymously online.

"Major League Baseball has been aware of and has fully cooperated with the federal investigation into the illegal breach of the Astros' baseball operations database," the MLB statement said. "Once the investigative process has been completed by federal law enforcement officials, we will evaluate the next steps and will make decisions promptly."

The Astros and Cardinals added that they would not comment further as it's an ongoing federal investigation.

Both the Cardinals and Major League Baseball have been served with subpoenas, the Times reported, but no actions have been taken against the officials under investigation.

According to the Times, the FBI believes that Cardinals officials gained access to the Astros' database by using a list of passwords associated with Astros general manager Jeff Luhnow dating to his tenure with the Cardinals from 2003 until he left for Houston after the 2011 season.

    Thanks for the responses.
I didn't think of FA offers and all that, and I can only wish that the scummiest outcome possible befalls the Cardinals. But in my heart, I agree with Think Blue, and believe zero will.
It would be, however, a good start for the new commish, to give the old Kennesaw Mountain Landis punishment; "no more tolerating BS like this, StLouis"...but that was then, and this is now.
In addition, of course, to whatever road the FBI takes against them. If any.
It is well known, that J Edgar Hoover, used to wear a boa made out of cardinal feathers during his homo trysts back in the day, so the Bureau may be fans.

Is it really stealing signs if the other team uses your old signs? I hate the Cardinals and all, but dude, change your fuckin' passwords.

As long as the Cardinal name gets dragged around in the mud a little bit.... maybe "The Cardinal way" can become associated with cheating instead of some romanticized, non-existent, utopian ideal of baseball. At least that would be nice to see.
