I fucking hate Justin Upton. We should sign him and send him to OKC, so we don't have to deal with his ass anymore.

He'd probably hit a liner foul and nail one of our top prospects in the head.

Didn't think he was going back anyway, but this should close the book on Price re-signing.

EDIT: I didn't realize that Happ pitched in Toronto before, no wonder the fans aren't happy.

Should the Dodgers give Jose Peraza the second-base spot? Should they bring back Chase Utley as a backup and a left-handed bat?
    -- Sal G., Los Angeles

I would give Peraza, No. 4 on the Dodgers' Top 30, every opportunity to win that job. While perhaps his prospect stock has faded a bit, he still has the potential to provide a real boost to the Dodgers' offense. He makes a lot of contact, hits for average and can steal bases. The one thing he does need to improve is his on-base ability (.318 OBP in the Minor Leagues in 2015). Given the fact that Joc Pederson and his .325 OBP inhabited the leadoff spot more than any other Dodgers player this past season, it won't take a whole lot to improve the top of the order in that regard. Peraza has the skills to play shortstop as well (though he obviously won't in 2016), and is a solid defensive second baseman.

As for Utley, he had a combined .629 OPS in 2015. If you think his August (.901 OPS) is a sign of something left in the tank off the bench, go right ahead. But I'd probably be inclined to look elsewhere.
    ------------------------------------
This might be better suited for the prospects thread, but it could relate to the opening day roster, so whatever.

I like Peraza man..... juuuuuuust maybe not yet ready to hand him the keys.

Another stop gap might be cool. Neil Walker is on the trade block, love to swoop him up potentially.

    Kapler impressed by Seager’s demeanor
by Daniel Starkand | Dodger Blue — 3 hours ago

Over the last few years Los Angeles Dodgers fans were told of a promising shortstop working his way up the Minor League ranks.

They got their first glimpse at Corey Seager last season when the 21 year old was promoted from Triple-A Oklahoma City in September.

While he was expected to be among the call-ups once active rosters expanded, Seager arrived days ahead of schedule, and needing to shoulder more of a workload due to Jimmy Rollins being hampered by injury.

The young shortstop quickly impressed with his ability to stay within himself and not be overwhelmed by the moment. Dodgers director of player development Gabe Kapler marveled at Seager’s demeanor and how it translated to defense, via Josh Jackson of MiLB.com:

“Sometimes we see a guy consistently make plays that look so easy and so routine that we don’t necessarily see acrobatic plays. What does that mean? He makes plays others make look acrobatic, he makes those plays look effortless. One thing that’s fascinating about Corey: the throws he makes on cutoffs and relays to cut down runners going from first to third look almost identical to the throws he makes with nobody on, when he’s just relaying the ball back. That calm. He’s got that thing that allows him to keep his body under control in high-pressure situations.”

As for the likelihood Seager, standing at 6 feet 4 inches tall, will be able to play shortstop moving forward, Kapler is confident the early 2016 National League Rookie of the Year candidate will succeed:

“We’re really happy with the way he’s handled shortstop and we have no doubt about his ability to dominate the position.”

In a combined 125 games last season with Double-A Tulsa and the OKC Dodgers, Seager hit .293/.344/.487 with 18 home runs, 37 doubles 76 RBIs and 81 runs scored.

There was no slowing him in the Majors, with Seager batting .337/.425/.561 with four home runs, eight doubles, 17 RBIs and 17 runs scored over 27 regular-season games with the Dodgers. His success resulted in Rollins being unseated as the club’s starting shortstop.

Much like with Joc Pederson in 2014 heading into 2015, Seager is in prime position to take hold of a starting job with the Dodgers. Rollins became a free agent once the season concluded and barring any surprises, Seager will be the Dodgers starting shortstop on Opening Day of the 2016 season.

Not that this will happen, but there's still time to make Tues. a joint presser, with Dave Roberts bringing in Darren O'Day once he's done

#Tigers in discussions with Jordan Zimmermann, sources tell @ken_rosenthal and me, with multiple people saying talks have become serious.
    ---------------------------
Down side to this would be that the Tigers pick is protected, so the Dodgers potential picks wouldn't move up.

The 5/110 that Zimmerman got could prove to be the best value of the top 4 starters.

    Latest On Ben Zobrist
By Zach Links | MLB Trade Rumors — 20 minutes ago

Ben Zobrist is the Mets’ “No. 1 target” this offseason, according to Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports (Twitter links). The Nationals, Braves, and Giants are also among the leading teams for Zobrist. The Royals, meanwhile, are not expected to offer the same type of money that those other clubs are.

Rosenthal adds that the veteran’s market is likely to become more defined over the next few days. Zobrist is seeking a four-year deal and a club’s willingness to go from three to four years will “likely be [the] deciding factor” for the veteran, per Rosenthal. Recently, Jon Heyman of CBSSports.com reported that there are as many as 20 teams with interest in the versatile switch-hitter and he listed the Cardinals as one of the most interested teams.

Zobrist is highly valued thanks to his incredible versatility coupled with his strong OBP. However, with his 35th birthday coming up in May, teams are understandably hesitant about giving him a four-year deal. On the plus side, however, Zobrist will not require the forfeiture of a draft pick since the midseason deal that sent him to KC made him ineligible for a qualifying offer. Earlier this offseason, MLBTR’s Tim Dierkes predicted that Zobrist would net a three-year, $51MM deal.

    Red Sox shopping Hanley Ramirez
By Zach Links | MLB Trade Rumors — 50 minutes ago

There’s “talk in the front office” that new Red Sox baseball chief Dave Dombrowski is trying to move Hanley Ramirez, according to Nick Cafardo of The Boston Globe. Cafardo adds that the Mariners, Orioles, and Angels “seem to be the targets” of DD’s campaign to relocate the pricey veteran after he turned in a massively disappointing season in 2015. It’s not immediately clear if those three clubs have interest, however.

Of course, trading Ramirez is probably easier said than done. Just last week, five general managers told Cafardo that they wouldn’t take on Ramirez even if the Red Sox picked up the tab on half of his remaining salary. Ramirez is owed $66MM through 2018 and he has a $22MM vesting option for 2019, so even at a reduced rate, that’s still a hefty price for a player coming off such a rough season on and off the field.

For their part, the Sox say that they’re still committed to Ramirez playing first base for them in 2016. They’re also hopeful that the soon-to-be 32-year-old can bounce back by dropping some weight. Ramirez was officially listed at 225 pounds this season but he was apparently tipping the scales at 240 pounds. All in all, Ramirez’s first year in Boston was dreadful. Despite hitting 19 home runs, he produced just a .291 OBP, and he struggled horribly with the transition from the infield to left field. At the time of his signing, Ramirez was coming off of a year in which he posted a .283/.369/.448 slash line with 13 homers for the Dodgers with a .300/.373/.500 slash line for his career.

On a related note, Cafardo hears that the Red Sox have discussed free agent slugger Chris Davis internally. However, that would only be doable if the Red Sox were able to move Ramirez. Also, the Red Sox would have to weigh their desire to add Davis’ bat against their need for a frontline starter.

That was a really good contract for the Tigers... but everybody said they didn't want Zimmermann. Damn. (Not necessarily people in here)
