Maeda is definitely in the rotation, it is just them trying to lengthen him out without potentially dealing with errors, bad innings to shorten the amount of innings he throws.
People forget that Seager missed most of last spring training too. He has supposedly been fine enough to play, they just wanted the pain to be 100% gone rather than him suffer through it for a couple weeks. I am starting to worry a bit as he does/has battled some odd injuries here since joining the org that they may move him to 3B sooner than later. Would not be surprised to see Turner at 1B by the end of his contract.
I totally get the timeline for Urias, still young and they want him to be ready for the end of the season, who cares about the start.

Sweet. A lender I work with is hooking me up with Opening Day Rockies tickets again this year. Just so happens that they will be playing the Dodgers this time around. should be fun.

Giants LH setup man, Will Smith is out for the season to undergo Tommy John Surgery.

    and uh oh....

Rockies Ace Jon Gray came out of his start today walking off the field with the trainer. He got knocked around in what looks like 2+ innings.

    • According to MLB.com’s Ken Gurnick, Dodgers reliever Josh Ravin will be sidelined for several weeks due to a groin strain. The news is much better for Pedro Baez, who (has no groin and) was able to throw a live BP and seems to be progressing through his thumb injury.

    Roberts encouraged by Ethier’s prognosis
by Matthew Moreno | Dodger Blue — 32 minutes ago

Dealing with lingering discomfort in his lower back, the Los Angeles Dodgers recently sent Andre Ethier for an x-ray and CT scan. He’d previously undergone an MRI on his balky back, which revealed a mild herniated disc.

Although the Dodgers did not provide an update to Ethier’s injury, the veteran outfielder will be held out of baseball activity for the next week. A decision on an immediate course of action was decided after Ethier met with back specialist Dr. Robert Watkins.

Ethier will be re-evaluated after the one-week layoff. Although the Dodgers will again begin another season without his services, manager Dave Roberts remains optimistic, via Andy McCullough of the L.A. Times:

“I think it’s actually a good sign,” Roberts said. “It’s not a six-to-eight-week thing, from what I understand. Him taking another week to let it subside, we’ll have a better idea of how aggressive we need to be.”

Dodgers president of baseball operations Andrew Friedman previously said the club did not harbor any ‘long-term’ concern over Ethier’s injury. Friedman made his remarks prior to the 34-year-old undergoing the x-ray and CT scan.

Dr. Watkins also examined Clayton Kershaw and outlined a path to recovery when the left-handed ace was diagnosed with a herniated disc in his lower back. Kershaw’s injury was initially believed to be minor, though he missed 10 weeks.

Albeit in just eight Cactus League games, Ethier was again in the midst of a strong showing in Spring Training. He went 6-for-12 with one double, a home run, six walks and two RBI. Ethier last played March 18, starting in left field and going 2-for-2 with an RBI double.

Despite roster competition, Hernandez grew comfortable leaving camp for WBC
by Matthew Moreno | Dodger Blue — 3 hours ago

Soon after players arrived at Camelback Ranch for the start of Spring Training, Los Angeles Dodgers general manager Farhan Zaidi confirmed the club expected to carry a backup shortstop on their 25-man active roster come the regular season.

The prime candidates to fill that role were Charlie Culberson, Kiké Hernandez and Chris Taylor. Hernandez seemingly held somewhat of an advantage over Culberson and Taylor due to greater versatility. But Taylor has negated some of that by logging time in center field this spring.

Not long into the competition, Hernandez left camp to join Puerto Rico in the World Baseball Classic. He admitted to having some initial reservations but they subsided, per Bill Plunkett of the O.C. Register:

“Before heading over, yes,” Hernandez said when asked if he worried about leaving camp instead of staying to fight for a job. “But once I was there, you had to pick and choose whether you were going to have your mind in spring training or have your mind on the WBC. Once everything started, it wasn’t hard to take my mind off here and just focus on that because it was pretty intense. It was like playing Game 7 but for eight games.”

Culberson and Taylor have done their part to make the Dodgers’ decision a difficult one. Culberson is hitting .255/.352/.340 with two doubles, one triple and three RBI through 19 Cactus League games.

Taylor is batting .432/.563/.622 with three doubles, two triples, three RBI and a team-high 10 walks in 18 games.

Prior to departing Camelback Ranch, Hernandez went 5-for-19 with one double, three walks and four strikeouts in seven Cactus League games. He did end his time on a positive note, putting together consecutive multi-hit games.

Over six WBC, making three starts, Hernandez had four hits (one triple), two RBI and three strikeouts in 15 at-bats.

His first action since Puerto Rico fell short to Team USA in the WBC final came Friday, when he started at shortstop and hit ninth. The 25-year-old went 2-for-2 with one double, one walk and one strikeout.

He’s now batting .273/.385/.748 with four walks in eight spring games. Hernandez has focused this spring on a improving his swing and path to the ball, as he looks to shake off last season’s struggles.

Seager may remain in Arizona during Freeway Series
by Eric Stephen | True Blue LA — 39 minutes ago

PHOENIX — Last spring, Corey Seager returned to major league game action only after the Dodgers returned home for the Freeway Series. This year, the wait might be even longer.

The Dodgers shortstop might remain at Camelback Ranch after camp breaks on Wednesday, in order to continue getting at-bats in minor league games to prepare for the regular season.

Seager hasn’t played in a major league game since March 3, nursing a sore oblique suffered on a throw from shortstop. He has played in three minor league games this week (Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday), including two at shortstop. He feels fine physically, but is still working on his swing.

“He came out of it well,” manager Dave Roberts said. “He doesn’t feel great mechanically, with his timing, but that’s to be expected.“

Seager is expected to play shortstop again in a minor league game on Monday, and get another 4-5 at-bats. The Dodgers’ minor league schedule runs through Saturday, giving Seager more opportunities to pile up at-bats in a game setting, and the more controlled environment allows opportunities for more chances as needed (he could bat every inning, for instance, rules be damned).

Last year, Seager missed the final 19 days of games in Arizona during spring training with a sprained right knee. He got at-bats on the minor league side, then returned to major league action by starting all three games of the Freeway Series against the Angels back in Los Angeles and Anaheim.

How much of this year’s Freeway Series Seager might miss is still undecided.

“To get him in a major league ballpark is really not a priority,” Roberts said. “It’s more, if he can accrue more at-bats down here, that’s what makes the most sense.”

    • Dodgers reliever Pedro Baez, who has been dealing with a right hand contusion this spring, will probably start the season on the disabled list, tweets Andy McCullough of the Los Angeles Times. Baez is the Dodgers’ top righty setup man, having tossed a career-high 74 innings and logged a 3.04 ERA and 10.09 K/9 against 2.68 BB/9 last season. Sergio Romo figures to serve as the main right-handed bridge to closer Kenley Jansen until Baez returns.
i thought romo was taking blanton's role anyway
