I don't begrudge Trammell either but Garvey has only the WAR stat as a fucking knock on him and it was still a plus 37. Probably going to get shit for this but isn't WAR a made up stat with many detractors?

Can someone go back and find my comment last year around this time when 3/4ths of this board was panicking just like today?
    - It’s December 10th, still two full months before players report.
    - Only one FA who was likely on the Dodgers radar has signed(Ohtani). Sorry, it was pretty well known that Morrow was likely getting a bigger contract to go somewhere else.
    - There has been one trade for a player the Dodgers could have probably used. There will be many many more.
    - If the season WERE to start tomorrow(it isn’t), the Dodgers would still be the most well built team in the NL and the favorites to go back to the WS. They are not going into the season as currently constructed. Like I posted earlier, the Dodgers are looking to acquire a controllable front of the rotation starter which is where acquiring Stanton caused issues.
    - IT’S DECEMBER 10TH!

The winter meetings haven’t even started and people are freaking out. 2 things have happened, just chill people. Like I said last year, if this is the roster come Feb 13, then by all means start to get pissed. Just for the love of god, stop acting like this is the eve before the season starts.

    Garvey simply wasn't HoF quality.

Even as a lifelong Dodgers fan, I'd say he was above average
    but not HoF

Angels held talks with C.C. Sabathia
by Mark Polishuk | MLB Trade Rumors — 7 minutes ago

The Angels have spoken to free agent hurler C.C. Sabathia, George A. King III of the New York Post reports (Twitter link). The Halos made one big rotation addition earlier this week by landing Shohei Ohtani, but Sabathia would bring more veteran stability to a pitching staff that is full of question marks after two injury-ravaged seasons.

Of course, Sabathia himself comes with significant health questions, as it wasn’t long ago that it seemed as if the southpaw’s persistent right knee problems were threatening to end his career. Despite this lingering injury and other DL stints for hamstring and groin issues over the last two years, Sabathia enjoyed a late-career resurgence as a productive innings-eater at the back of the Yankees’ rotation. Sabathia posted a 3.81 ERA, 7.5 K/9 and 2.37 K/BB rate over 328 1/3 innings in 2016-17, accumulating 4.5 fWAR over that stretch.

The Yankees were also recently in touch with Sabathia, who has previously stated that he would prefer to remain in the Bronx. That desire probably only grew stronger in the wake of the Yankees’ acquisition of Giancarlo Stanton, though with the team now boasting an outfielder surplus to go with their wealth of prospects, New York has the means to acquire a starter with more long-term potential than Sabathia if it chooses.

If Sabathia did choose to return to his home state of California, he’d join an Angels rotation that includes Ohtani, Garrett Richards, Matt Shoemaker, Tyler Skaggs and a wealth of other candidates like Andrew Heaney, J.C. Ramirez, Nick Tropeano, or Parker Bridwell. Any of the latter group of arms could be Triple-A starting depth or moved to the bullpen to fill the Angels’ need for multi-inning relief options.

LAD should check in on Sabathia as well. Fall back plan if they strike out on Archer and others in trades. I have more confidence in Sabathia in a big game than anyone LAD employs pitching wise. Which sucks, but that's the case anyhow. Sabathia would be a solid pick up for the Halos if they get him on the right deal

Counter point, just to play devils advocate.

Last year, when April rolled around, what did we do?

We got Forsythe when all the talk was trying to get Dozier. And how much crap did we talk about Forsythe on this board when things mattered while Dozier had a great year?

We re-signed Hill and Utley. How much crap did we give Utley toward the end of the season? Hill was a good signing, I admit.

But the other things we did was re-sign Turner and Jansen. Players we already had and really could not afford to lose.

So the only other big move was to trade for Darvish, who we also gave hell for reasons we all know.

So what are we waiting for again?

Who would have wanted Sale? Who would have wanted Archer (again). How about Chapman as a 8th inning or alternate closer?

I understand all the “what if’s”, but we have seen these patterns before. Sign rehab projects for low ball contracts that aren’t really that lowball, hope they pan out, and when they don’t, eat their contracts and say “we’ll we tried.”

    Sergio Romo anyone?

There was a proven high level talent we passed on, and one of our rehab projects that actually worked out, we let go to a potential post season rival.

    Again, just devil’s advocate.

    - When things mattered most, the Forsythe we were waiting for decided to show up.

    - They also signed Brandon Morrow, who joined Joe Blanton from the prior year to be a scrap heap setup man.

All this “they don’t do anything” stuff is nonsense. The team has improved every year since the FO started and were a hanging slider away from likely being World Series champs. They aren’t remaking this team, especially when they know damn well this roster is going to have them in contention around the trade deadline when players are cheaper and you can directly address your needs. The Dodgers currently have, like you said a BUNCH of what if’s, case in point:
    - What if Joc has figured out his swing?
    - What if Andrew Toles comes back healthy?
    - What if Alex Verdugo is as good as many project him to be?
    - What if Walker Buehler is the Ace many think he’ll be?
    - What if Logan’s Forsythe just needed to get healthy?
    - What if Adrian comes back healthy?
    - What if Pedro Baez really is fixed?
    - What if Mitchell White continues to dominate at the upper level?
    - What if Edwin Rios continues to hit and forces the team to find a spot for him?
    - What if Brock Stewart comes back healthy to start the season?
    - What if Julio Urias stays ahead of schedule and is back to where he used to be?
    - What if Ryu really was figuring things out at the end of the season?
    - What if Brandon McCarthy finally stays healthy(he turned it all on in his last contract year)?
    - What if Scott Kazmir didn’t listen to eastern science voodoo bullshit and actually dealt with his hip appropriately?
There are a lot of reasons for the Dodgers to go into the season as currently constructed(they won’t) and those very same reasons are why they’re not going to do anything crazy trade wise. They’re going to do the small stuff as they always do, but people thinking this team needs a full makeover are going to be wildly unhappy about this offseason(and many more to come) and the FO is right to not go all crazy. Fix some holes here and there(bullpen), don’t overpay or hamstring the org long term and if major holes develop, address them at the deadline.

Dodgers lost two more player personnel today, Josh Bard and Alex Tamin are on their ways to other orgs. Bard is the Yankees new bench coach and Tamin is the new Director of Major League Operations for the Braves. This is what worries me more than anything else as the FO has seen tremendous turnover this offseason and it will be interesting to see how they respond.

    in all honesty
i think ozuna is a better option for us than stanton (was)
    he slashed .312/.376/.548
had 27 more rbi than anyone on our team
and his 37 hr were more than anyone except cody
he also made a mere $3.5MM last year and is under team control until 2020
yankees can have stanton and that ≈$300MM anchor
we can use the money (we didn't spend) to fill out the rotation and pen

You know your team is respected and admired for talent when you loose people in your organization. Anthopolis/Bard/Tamin so far.

Sorry, I’m not gonna get over Ohtani coming to LA and it being the wrong LA team. That will scar me for years unless he proves to be nothing. This front of the rotation starter thing, like who? There is maybe Archer and Gerrit Cole. Chances seem slim on Darvish, so like who?

Solid Dodgers seek opportunity at Meetings
With much of team returning, GM says LA doesn't 'have any glaring needs'
    by Ken Gurnick | MLB.com — 3 hours ago

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. -- After taking a swing and miss on two-way phenom Shohei Ohtani and passing on MVP Giancarlo Stanton, the Dodgers could be busy at the Winter Meetings beginning Monday. Or not. Either way, Dodgers.com will be there to cover it.

MLB.com and MLB Network will have wall-to-wall coverage of the 2017 Winter Meetings, with Twitter updates @kengurnick. Fans can watch live streaming of all news conferences and manager availability on MLB.com, including the Rule 5 Draft on Thursday at 6 a.m. PT.

After falling one win short of their first World Series title in 29 years, the Dodgers come to the annual convention not needing anything desperately. They tried for Ohtani, who chose the Angels, and were apparently willing to pick up far less of Stanton's $295 million contract than the Yankees did ($265 million).

"We're fortunate that a lot of the team is going to be coming back," general manager Farhan Zaidi said last month. "We don't feel we have any glaring needs. We'll continue to be opportunistic to improve the roster."

To that end during the Winter Meetings, the Dodgers could pursue a trade for a right-handed-hitting outfielder consolation prize, such as Pittsburgh's Andrew McCutchen or Stanton's former Miami teammate, Marcell Ozuna, at a fraction of Stanton's financial cost.

Meanwhile, the Dodgers will be looking to re-sign or replace free agents Yu Darvish in the starting rotation, Brandon Morrow and Tony Watson in the bullpen and Chase Utley as a platoon second baseman.

In three years of the Andrew Friedman regime, the Dodgers have passed on nine-figure marquee free agents while clinging tightly to their most coveted prospects, specifically Corey Seager, Cody Bellinger and Julio Urias. The untouchable prospect everyone will want this winter is right-handed pitcher Walker Buehler.

The Dodgers have filled holes in recent offseasons with affordable free agents and trades -- often complicated ones -- for controllable young players like catcher Yasmani Grandal and pitcher Alex Wood, or veterans with short-term commitments like Utley and Howie Kendrick.

The Dodgers would like to trade Adrian Gonzalez or Scott Kazmir, but other clubs find outfielders Alex Verdugo, Andrew Toles or Joc Pederson more intriguing and less expensive.

Manager Dave Roberts will hold his Winter Meetings media session on Tuesday at 12 p.m. PT. The Rule 5 Draft will take place Thursday morning. The Dodgers' roster is full at 40.

And this is the kind of hubris that worries me. They already lost Morrow since this article was published.

    I don't disagree with you.
    But screw McCarthy.
Least favorite Dodger of all time. Wouldn't mind him being forced into retirement in some way.
