I love how Doc has totally cancelled our advantage at DH by starting Pollock and Barnes.

Looks like his right arm caught the virus. Baba Booey thought that was pathetic.

Boston Red Sox’s Tom Werner on Mookie Betts extension with Dodgers: ‘Let’s revisit this conversation in 12 years'

Two days after former Red Sox star Mookie Betts signed a 12-year, $365 million extension with the Dodgers, Red Sox chairman Tom Werner said it was too early to lament the fact that Boston was unable to sign Betts before trading him to Los Angeles in February.

“It’s always difficult to trade a talented player of Mookie’s caliber, but let’s revisit this conversation in 12 years,” Werner said on WEEI’s “Ordway, Merloni and Fauria” show. “Hopefully you (the hosts) and I will both still be here. That’s a very, very long-term deal for a team to swallow. You guys know as well as I do that the history of long-term deals is checkered at best. We made what we thought was a generous offer but for us it’s time to turn the page.”

The Red Sox offered Betts extensions on at least three occasions and their last offer (before the 2019 season) is believed to have exceeded $300 million in guaranteed money. Betts’ reportedly countered by asking for a $420 million deal and it appears the economic impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic changed his strategy with free agency rapidly approaching.

“We tried, on a number of occasions, to make a deal with Mookie,” Werner said. “It was his desire to test free agency. Our last deal, I think everybody knows the number. It was a large number.”

In February, with Betts less than a year away from free agency, the Red Sox shipped him to Los Angeles in a five-player deal that brought outfielder Alex Verdugo and two prospects to Boston. By trading Betts and lefty David Price, the Red Sox were able to get under the $208 million competitive balance ta threshold for 2020 and avoid being penalized by Major League Baseball.

“One thing that I’ve stressed, and I don’t think this has been stressed enough, is that year in and year out, we are one of the highest payrolls in baseball,” Werner continued. “We’re going to deploy that money in other ways. We’ve made some great decisions over the years. We’ve made some decisions that I regret. I think that given our choices and given that Mookie wanted to test free agency, I think we got an outstanding player for hopefully longer than six years, but six years, in Alex Verdugo. Given our decision in March, we made a sober decision.”

Werner, a Los Angeles resident who along with principal owner John Henry has helped guide the Red Sox to four World Series championships since buying the team in 2002, took a jab at the Dodgers, who haven’t won a World Series since 1988.

“When people are partying in Los Angeles, I just want to remind Los Angeles because I come from Los Angeles and I spend the winters there, that in the last 20 years, Los Angeles has won zero World Series and the Red Sox have won four,” Werner said. “I’ve got nothing to be complaining about regarding our past. We think we made the right decision at the time.”

Adam Duvall smacks a homer to right and ends up hitting a cutout of a dog.

That dog just so happens to belong to Jeff McNeil of the Mets

The Marlins have had an outbreak of COVID with 33% of the travel squad and staff coming down with the virus. Their opening night game at home has been cancelled as has the Phillies/Yankees game(the Marlins just played Philly). The MLB season is now hanging on by a thread.

I still firmly believe we will not win a WS with Dave Roberts as manager.
I don't gaf who we sign.
Robots will nullify, or at least, dilute to a great level, any positive we may have established. He's a loser in the brass ring game.

Corey Kluber and Verlander potentially done for the season now. I was pissed about that Rangers/Indians trade, but it looks like the Indians were correct in their assessment of Kluber's worth. Something to watch with Verlander is that kind of strain is usually a precursor to TJ surgery. IF that is the outcome, that likely means that his 2021 season is gone, a $33M hit to a franchise that is rumored to be counting their pennies as they prepare for a stream of their top players becoming free agents.

Springer and Reddick are FA's after this year, Correa is a FA the year after that. I have to imagine their value on the FA market will be somewhat subdued as I suspect certain teams will blacklist them. So maybe the Astros get a discount.

Springer and Correa will get theirs. Reddick is washed up and will get an end of career deal. By the time they hit FA, the cheating scandal won't matter much

Just wondering who a suitable replacement is in your eyes.

In my time on boards of this type the Dodgers have never had a competent manager according to some posters.
