Prayers up to Tommy. Met the man on more than one occasion and it was always so cool as a kid. I still remember in the early days of MLB radio, they had him on during a slow day to chat when they were dying for coverage. He told stories FOR HOURS and they were all fucking awesome. The host kept offering Tommy time to tell stories and that MF'er just kept going. I drove from Canfield, OH to outside Buffalo, NY and he was still rolling. If anything, I am glad he got to see these guys win again. Here are some rumors...
    • The Cubs are said to be open for business and are willing to listen on almost any of their Vets. One player that is supposed to be heavily talked about in trades already has been Javier Baez. The Dodgers are assumed to be interested in both Baez and Bryant as both have one year of control remaining and may come cheaply as they are both coming off of abysmal years. Baez retains a lot of value even in bad hitting seasons due to his absurd defensive skills. He had back to back years of at/nearly 6 WAR seasons before the drop off this season. I know he is pretty hated on here, but I sure love to watch him. Bryant has always been linked to the Dodgers due to him being from Las Vegas and a long time assumption that he wants to return close to home. The other feeling for the link is he would be a 1 year replacement option to Justin Turner. The upside greatly favors Bryant, but Turner has a bit more consistency, especially in the playoffs. Both are no longer viewed positively for their defensive prowess at 3B. The Cubs system is wrecked, so that would be an interesting route, but the club may find it tough to greatly restock the farm unless someone gets desperate.
    • The Rockies are said to be more realistic about trading Nolan Arenado. The local media has labeled Arenado as a malcontent over his feud with the orgs horrific management. A deal is considered unlikely if not impossible as the club wants good prospects back and are said to not want to take on much of his contract. The Cardinals and Dodgers are the two teams that have been most heavily linked to him in the past, but both don't appear to be options. The Cards do not have the funds to take on his contract as they are one of the few teams in baseball that rely HEAVILY on their gate take. While the Dodgers are said to be a nonstarter as ownership refuses to deal with us. With other big money teams saying they don't have the cash, it could mean another year in CO for Arenado.
    • The Brewers are reportedly open to moving Josh Hader if they can land some offensive help in return.
    • The Mets have been projected to be one of the big spenders this offseason, but it may not be in the way that many had originally thought. Sandy Alderson said that the clubs goal is to add depth to the org this winter, something the Mets sorely lack. Instead of going big on Bauer, Realmuto and Lindor, they could choose to take advantage of the massive amount of DFA's and sign a more solid group than top heavy one.
    • 4 teams have expressed interest in Jake Odorizzi who is coming off of an injury shortened season. Odorizzi has been one of the leagues most consistent pitchers since becoming an established starter in the 2014 season with 2020 being his first full season without eclipsing 28 starts. Never a dominant pitcher, the 6'2 right hander has been a solid middle of the rotation starter throughout his career and was coming off a 2019 that saw him put up his best full year and an all star appearance. The Giants, Jays, Mets and Twins are all said to be active in talks with him.
    • KBO star Ha-Seong Kim is going to posted after the Thanksgiving holiday. Kim just turned 25 and is coming off of his best season in the KBO where he hit 30 HR's with a .921 OPS. Kim will be considered one of the top free agents in the game once posted and he would also vault to top prospect status once signed. There are some questions about him sticking at SS, but he has the tools to man 2B or 3B and the bat is projected to still be solid-above average in MLB. He would be an interesting option for the Dodgers as 2B alternative to Lux, but it sounds like Kim will have a preference to go somewhere that the club plans to allow him to start from the get-go.
Still boring as fuck and things are expected to still remain somewhat quiet until the rules for 2021 are put into place.

    San Diego Padres
    @Padres

The #Padres have signed RHP Mike Clevinger to a two-year contract through the 2022 season. Clevinger will also undergo Tommy John surgery on Tuesday:

And the rumor is Bauer is in SD right now. That would be nice double aces for any team...especially SD.

I always took comfort in knowing their anemic pitching staff neutralized their improved hitting. Seems to no longer be the case, and then if they sign Bauer too they'll be that much better. Hopefully Dodgers are at least having a conversation with him, to see if the numbers work out. I know another starter is not a high priority for us, but sometimes the best moves are the ones that prevent your opponents from getting better.

Bauer is going to have a number of suitors so let's try not to freak out every time it is announced he is visiting a club. He very well is likely to also visit the Giants and Angels. That would be their 4th major contract and potentially 3rd long term deal which is very dangerous for an org that has not been much for spending until recently. They were generally at the bottom of the pack for payroll, but have moved into the middle tier the past two seasons. Not sure how they could now get Bauer and suddenly be able to hang with the upper tier when they have a number of good prospects that are going to need to be paid before those contracts expire. Teams like the Padres are not usually the ones that spend big on pitchers as that is such a dangerous game to play when you aren't a franchise that has the financial might as some of the others. I do think he meets with our FO to boot.

Speaking of Tommy, the weirdness of similarities someone pointed out to me:

he got his ring in his 5th year coaching and third World Series try

Roberts got his ring in his 5th year coaching and third World Series try

They say it takes 15-18 months to really get back at it now and year two is generally the better season. That is going to be risky, but yeah they signed him for below what his projected Arb was going to be this year, so maybe worth holding on to him.

My thoughts on Trevor Bauer are to stay away. He has great stuff I guess, but at end of the day: he’s had 1.5 good seasons during his career, in which he’s had multiple teammates and coaching staffs hate him meanwhile seemingly been very “me first” and not “team first”. Sure he’ll have some more good years but not worth it, someone more desperate can get him

Never trade for Cleveland pitchers. The day Bieber is on the trade block, the day after is when you learn he needs Tommy john

There has also been this narrative shift for him where he is suddenly this well liked guy and "his teammates love him." I've said a number of times that I know a few people that knew him well coming up and all have said he is the furthest thing from a good dude and matched up with the stories we were hearing up until a year or two ago before he started shit talking the Astros and the fans started liking him. These are common everyday people and guys that shared clubhouses with him. Unless he has legit suddenly shifted his personality, I have a hard time believing he's suddenly this clubhouse darling. Maybe he did fix things the minute he landed with the Reds and he has gotten help, but don't forget that the Indians were all too ready to get rid of him for a package headlined by YASIEL FUCKING PUIG. The good thing I have heard about him is he is absolutely dedicated to being as good as he can be, but this has also been to a detriment in the past where he tweaks something at an inopportune time and he fails. If you hate Buehler being a cocky ass, you should not want Bauer. He is Drew Lock cocky no matter the instance with a Zack Greinke filter, that can be a bad mix.
