According to Alex Kennedy of HoopsWorld, the Los Angeles Lakers have inquired about Atlanta Hawks point guard Kirk Hinrich.

It’s no secret that the Lakers are in serious need of help in the backcourt and on the perimeter. Derek Fisher, 37, seems unable to keep up with some of the quicker and younger names at his position, Steve Blake, 32, is a capable outside shooter and willing defender, but neither really can create easy looks for Kobe Bryant to help ease some of the strain off the 16-year veteran, who leads the league in scoring (28.5 ppg) and shots taken (23.7).

After missing the Hawks' first 18 games recovering from an offseason left shoulder surgery, Hinrich, 31, has struggled to play up to his career numbers, averaging just 4.8 points, 2.5 assists and 1.6 rebounds in 17 games played.

So why the interest from the Lakers?

One reason is that Hinrich has $8 million that comes off the books at the end of the season and Los Angeles has long been rumored in trying to trade for Orlando Magic’s Dwight Howard and now the Minnesota Timber Wolves’ Michael Beasley.

The word on the streets is that the Mavs may trade Lamar Odom to Phoenix for Steve Nash. That will get Odom closer to his home in LA.

As of March 1st, the majority of the free agents signed over the summer are now eligible to be dealt. While that may not mean much as far as the headliners in a deal, it’s often the “ballast” that makes a numbers work and where a minimum player might come into play.

One league source predicts there won’t be a lot of movement in general given that “bad teams only have to suffer another seven weeks before they sell [their fans on the] lottery.”

One of the teams looking to improve is the Los Angeles Lakers, who may not quite be good enough to win a title but still feels tremendous pressure to perform (especially with the team’s massive payroll).

Technically the Lakers are still in the mix for Dwight Howard but there’s no indication yet what path the Orlando Magic will walk.

On Wednesday, ESPN’s Chris Broussard wrote Source: Lakers decline Wolves’ offer for Michael Beasley.

HOOPSWORLD has previously reported the Lakers interest in the Minnesota Wolves’ forward. Had the original Chris Paul trade gone through, LA would have had the same $8.9 million Lamar Odom trade exception to acquire the tweener three/four and had some preliminary discussions to that end.

Broussard mentioned Los Angeles had rejected Beasley for a first-round draft pick (via the Odom exception), citing the Lakers “do not want to add to their luxury tax bill.”

He also wrote “it is possible they could change their minds before the March 15 deadline.”

The takeaway from the article should be that second quote. Given age and production (Derek Fisher is 37-years old and averaging 5.5 points a game on 37.7% shooting), the Lakers have made acquiring a point guard their primary focus.

They’re willing to deal Pau Gasol for pieces for a high-level point guard but unless they get a tremendous offer (Rajon Rondo, Steph Curry, Kyle Lowry, etc.), they’ll keep Gasol and look at their options over the summer.

That would leave the trade exception as their primary means to address their biggest issue.

While there’s no question the Lakers could use Beasley’s scoring punch and outside shot in the front court, last check he can’t play point guard.

A league source tells HOOPSWORLD the Lakers may have an alternate package that might work for Beasley while preserving their exception.

If LA would surrender two first-round picks, the Wolves could swap Beasley for seldom-used forward Luke Walton.

The Lakers have two selections in the upcoming draft (their own and a protected first from the Dallas Mavericks). LA would be able to send both from 2012 or just one and a future pick in 2014.

Naturally Minnesota has no interest in Walton but would they be willing to surrender some of their cap space next year for draft considerations? Luke is set to make $5.8 million in 2012/13 but he has a 7.5% trade kicker so that would climb to $6.2 million.

Conversely, should the Lakers actively look to dump picks given how quickly the roster is aging?

Dropping Walton would take $11.6 million off LA’s books next year including luxury taxes. Economically that might make it worthwhile for the Lakers to look for talent in the second round or free agency instead of in the 20-30 range of the draft.

Beasley spoke to HOOPSWORLD on Wednesday about the Laker rumors.

“It’s hard not to be aware of it with the social media and everybody talking about it,” said Beasley. “I’m playing for the Timberwolves. I’m going to play my heart out for them. This is the team I’m on now. I love my guys. I love the teams. I love the coaches. I love the city. If I get traded then I have no control over that but as of now I’m a Timberwolf and I’m going to play when I get the opportunity.”

Beasley’s qualifying offer to become a restricted free agent after this season is $8.2 million. According to the league source, it’s unlikely that any team will pay Michael that kind of salary next year.

Would it be worthwhile for the Lakers to give up two firsts and let Beasley walk just to save money? Can he be re-signed long term at a more reasonable rate?

If Beasley was acquired for Walton, the Lakers could then turn their attention to acquiring a point guard with their remaining exception but would they in turn have to send out yet another first (to get someone like Ramon Sessions of the Cleveland Cavaliers)?

Then again, Sessions may opt-out of his $4.6 million after this season and become a free agent. Would a team like the Lakers even give up a first with that in mind, given he may leave the Cavaliers as a free agent in July?

These are the issues facing General Manager Mitch Kupchak and Executive Vice President of Basketball Operations Jim Buss.

Equally Wolves General Manager David Kahn may find other teams willing to give up a single first along with an expiring contract for Beasley.

Any trade is fully reliant on another team’s willingness to deal. It remains to be seen what the Wolves will do with Michael, what the Celtics will do with Rondo, what the Magic will do with Howard.

By the end of March 15th, those answers will be clear, at least until the summer

The Bulls question their ability to beat the Heat in a seven-game series without making a move, according to a source.

Chicago has expressed interest in Pau Gasol and would quickly deal Carlos Boozer to the Lakers in a deal.

But the Lakers would likely want Luol Deng included, which would be a non-starter for Chicago.

While Boston is wondering about Steph Curry, the Warrior whose name is most often heard in trade rumors is Monte Ellis. Ellis has been open to (though not insistent) leaving Golden State for years, and if he had his druthers, he'd wind up with the Lakers, the Bulls or the Magic next to Dwight Howard, sources say. But none of those scenarios appears likely. While an Ellis trade is certainly possible, the Warriors would rather move Curry than Ellis, whom they believe is the better player.

Golden State is desperate for a big man and it would take a good one for them to part with either guard. The Warriors did in fact call New Jersey back in December to inform the Nets that they would be willing to participate in a three-team trade with Orlando, whereby the Warriors would send Ellis to Orlando in exchange for Brook Lopez, according to sources.

While that deal has little chance of happening, in part because Orlando would want much more than Ellis in return for Howard -- in fact, the Magic would want at least Lopez and Ellis -- if the Nets are able to sign Howard as a free agent this summer, they could revisit the Lopez-for-Ellis scenario since Lopez would then become expendable.

Rondo for Gasol rumor hot again

According to Peter Vecsey of the NY Post, the Lakers would be more than interested in acquiring Rajon Rondo from the Celtics.

If the Lakers indeed are interested in signing Rasheed Wallace — a logical step-down from flirting with Gilbert Arenas—it lends credence to the Rajon Rondo/Jermaine O’Neal-Pau Gasol swap I keep hearing. Lord knows they’re desperate for a point guard and Rondo is exceedingly obtainable and Kobe Bryant loves his “any means possible” style.

Take this rumor as a grain of salt, considering it comes for a journalist with a long history of controversy behind him. Having mentioned that, it is worth to say that this is the second time this rumor appears in the media.

Eric Pincus reported that anything between these two teams would have to wait until March 1st, precisely the day in which players signed before the season started -like Brandon Bass- would be elegible to be part of any transaction. I would guess more players would be included in the deal, like Jermaine O'Neal from Boston.

Get ready for the arrival of a vast amount of rumors in the next three weeks. Probably 90 % of all this will never be real, but it is worthy material for discussion.

Allen has a skillset — the ability to shoot the ball — that fits in with any team. And with a $10 million expiring contract, there are a number of teams that could benefit from adding the NBA’s all-time 3-point shooting king. Among those believed to have some interest in Allen, are the Los Angeles Clippers. With the season-ending injury to Chauncey Billups, the Clippers have a huge void to fill at the shooting guard position.

As for Pierce, he still has two years remaining on his contract after this season (the final year is partially guaranteed), but he’s still one of the better one-on-one scorers in the NBA. Adding a player like Pierce, either as a starter or coming off the bench, could provide some much-needed depth to a title contender or a playoff team looking to improve their standing. Some of the teams believed to have interest in Pierce include both of his hometown teams — the Los Angeles Lakers and the Clippers — as well as the Houston Rockets.

In talking to people around the Los Angeles Lakers, upgrading the point guard position has become a priority for Mitch Lupchak and Jim Buss. While L.A. has had interest in names like Ramon Sessions and Kirk Hinrich for years, the odds of swinging a deal for either may be slim.
I am hearing that, if no other deal can be made before the deadline, the team will look to swing a smaller trade for a point guard in the 11th hour. Two names the Lakers are closely monitoring are Will Bynum of the Detroit Pistons and A.J. Price of the Indiana Pacers. Bynum particularly is a favorite of Mitch Kupchak’s for his explosiveness and ability to create shots for others.
Should the Lakers fail to swing a deal sources say their final option would be to sign free agent guard Gilbert Arenas.
The trade deadline is March 15th.

I dont see Gasol for Rondo deal happening...Couple of reasons why, they're rivals and Stern vetoed the Chris Paul trade, cant think why he would let this slide, yeah I know New Orleans is a small market team and Paul going to clippers is alot better for the NBA and all and in conclusion, Rondo is not going to be traded.PERIOD

He's someone you build around, not trade...Last time I checked, theres three aging hall of famers on that team that should be traded because Boston will not survive in the East and that Odom for Nash trade is hilarious..Nash still has plenty of value in him if he were to be traded
