    Hey everyone,
We have an upgraded server and a license for upgraded Xenforo forum software. Obviously, we haven't migrated yet, but there are some complications and I wanted to give all of you a voice in what happens next.
    • The version of the forum software we use (Xenforo 1.5.0) is nearly 10 years old and not supported
    • The current version of Linux that runs on the old server is not supported, especially many of the database front and back-end tools.
    • We seem to be stable now, although we're still seeing some server/database errors. With the cleanup that was done, we do seem to have enough drive and memory space for now.
    • There are known issues with the datatbase that contains all our posts. For whatever reason, it's architected as a single monolithic file for pretty much everything that is DSP. This will likely only get worse.
    • The version of the forum software we're using is not supported by the modern tools/database on our new server. We can't migrate this unsupported forum instance to a supported a OS environment on the new server.
    • The new version of the software won't run on the old server, we can't upgrade in-situ. To upgrade the forum software, we have to migrate to a new server.
    • There are known issues with migrating XF 1.5.0 instances to 2.3.3 (the current version). Some people have reported success travelling through a series of intermediate upgrades, but the its likely that any forum software upgrade will lose some or all of the historical data (posts).
    • Many of the upgrades/customizations we've done to DSP are not compatible with the latest version of XF. An upgrade will likely lose the "look and feel" of DSP, although we could re-customize. It's just added work for the admins.
We could stay as we are now, and chances are we'll probably be fine, at least for a while. However, I expect to have problems over time and they will become more difficult to fix.

We could upgrade/migrate, but I believe we'd lose our post history and the look-and-feel of DSP, at least for a while.

I'd like to upgrade/migrate, but we should decide as a community.

    -Craig

I do refer to old posts on occasion, but I'd agree that it's better knowing that if I'm absent for a period of time, DSP will still be here when I check back in. And it seems that a chunk of posts already got erased during the recent downtime, so really, what's the difference at this point? I vote to migrate. Embrace change!

We were working on stuff about a decade ago.
I think we should start fresh with a new database.
But if there is ample space on the new server could we not also create a backup DSP site using the old database as sample content on read only mode?

thats why i wanted to save the database in some way
i always wanted to have a feature that would pull old posts from years pasts in the way that facebook started doing a few years ago
where they show you something from your past on that month/day
but i wanted just to have a place i could data mine for keywords in order to use all of our posts as fodder for repurposed content
there is a lot of gold in there and it would be nice to interact with it somehow
like new articles created from old takes or from metrics derived from our old data
imagine an article thats essentially a compendium highlighting all of the funny things Irish has said over the years?
what a circle jerk that would be!

    Well...my kid.
    He was four.
