18 hours ago AP - Sports

EL SEGUNDO, Calif. (AP) -- The 15-year-old daughter of Los Angeles Lakers general manager Mitch Kupchak has died.

The team said Alina Claire Kupchak died Monday after a lengthy illness. No other details were provided.

The Lakers said Kupchak and his wife, Claire, expressed their gratitude for the outpouring of love, support, thoughts and prayers.

The couple has an 18-year-old son, Maxwell.

"That's a hard one for everybody, losing a child," Clippers coach Doc Rivers said in opening his pregame remarks. "On behalf of the Clippers, we want to send out our blessings."

Kupchak has been GM of the Lakers since 2000 after Jerry West resigned. Kupchak played in the NBA for 10 years, retiring in 1986.

Sad...hate to see a child suffer like that.
Surprised the guy has been on the job for the last little while. You'd think he'd have taken a leave from the team to be with his daughter.

Terrible news. Kupchak has always been a class act and NO CHILD ever deserves to die at 15. Terrible news.

Always hug your kids. Always. Any and every chance that you get. Whether they are embarrassed or not. Life is short. Life is cruel. You gotta make the most out of each and every day.

My wife learned over the holidays that several of our neighbors don't hug their kids. As in ever. Since they were 5 or so. WTF??

Crazy damned fools in my eyes. I truly look as these women differently now. Men not hugging their kids is also BS but moms not hugging kids ??? Cannot make this right in my head. Don't care what reply or what circumstance or whatever.

Hug your kids. Forever. Love your kids unconditionally. Forever. WTF are parents for otherwise??

@craig, if it were at all my guess it might be that he'd go into the office simply to not dwell any further on something he simply could not fix. Heartbreaking either way. My best to the Kupchaks. Sad.

    I feel the same way.
    Kids need hugs not drugs.

    So true Rube..

Wonder how many kids diagnosed with ADD or ADHD ever get the time of day from their parents? I suspect, in a wholly unscientific manner, that when you refuse to give your kids your undivided attention that tells them its OK not to give things in their own lives their undivided attention?

My wholly unscientific opinion perhaps but it somehow feels empirically correct

It certainly passes the common sense test.
Parent can't pay attention to kid...kid can't pay attention to anything.
