my guess is mlb got (created?) some dirt on him dude was so self-righteous, holier than thou... he knew he was universally despised by players/coaches/managers and seemed to revel in the villain role and yet he was well-liked and respected by his umpiring peers no way he’d just suddenly step down, especially mid-season naw, they got something on him
my theory is that the umps WANT the balls and strikes called since its not like they'll have to take a pay decrease and the job just got easier there are no accidents anymore
