If Verdugo is with the Dodgers and in RF, I can't see him being platooned. I know they're giving lip service and coach speak, that he has to earn everyday privileges and I agree, he should earn it. But ultimately, if he's not playing everyday, I'd hope they just trade him to a team that'll value him that way before they throw him in a box. Too young for that. Kid put together a really good year against lefties last year, is contact oriented and doesn't seem to shit away a ton of ABs. Let him live

Personally, I'm still good with just playing Kike at 2B everyday. See if he can build on what he did last season. He's in the prime of his career

Catcher, I don't even give a fuck. Just catch the damn ball.

Is it sad that I am forced to hope that the Dodgers are one of the "mystery" teams pursuing Machado........

CHICAGO -- Cubs star Kris Bryant expressed frustration for free agents Bryce Harper and Manny Machado, who remain unsigned with less than a month to go before spring training begins.

"It's really weird," Bryant said Friday from the Cubs' annual winter fan convention. "Two of the best players in the game, and they have very little interest in them, from just what I hear. It's not good. It's something that will have to change. I know a lot of the other players are pretty upset about it."

Lol Knows his time is coming. Keep getting hurt.

I don't know about committing long term to Machado. We had him last year, what did that get us over the year before? His hitting was not as good as in Baltimore, leading me to accept that his numbers were inflated there. He was in a contract year and still did things to piss off management and fans. What happens when he has a multi-year contract locked in? I see a lot of problem moments for whomever signs him. And I just don't see him carrying a team to the promised land... he hasn't yet.

    LF: Harper
    SS: Machado
    1B: Turner
    2B: Muncy

IMO, those players are bad comps. Darvish and Arrieta were coming off lackluster seasons. AP was well into his 30’s and the poster child for someone taking steroids. The truth is there are winners and losers, but mega deals for guys actually in their prime (not a cherry-picked list, just top contracts of all time signed in a player’s prime)?

    Stanton
    ARod
    Jeter
    Joe Mauer
    Prince Fielder
    Kershaw
    Teixeira
    CC Sabathia
    Manny Ramirez
    Jason Heyward

A little older but still close to prime:
    David Price
    Scherzer
    Votto

There are others who can be added to the list, but honestly a better crop than I was expecting before I started this post. Most of the really bad contracts were for guys over 30. We can also find bad pitcher contracts if we go down the list.

i think everything was new and shiny for manny
gotta believe there's a lot of pride under that jersey
character wise i think he has more upside tbh
RH bat is a huge issue and if we can make the space i actually like acquiring him over harper
harper just seems entitled to me and i don't get why

This is a good point, JT started to look slow on defense at third last year, unlike previous years.

You could clearly see he was wearing a fucking Orioles shirt under that jersey, and it pissed me off!

Maybe he was trying to do the slumping Bobby Rayburn thing like in The Fan?

I would prefer Machado over Harper. Slide Seager or JT to 2B. That RH bat balances out our lineup a lot better then another Lefty.

    • Cubs president Theo Epstein didn't really want to fire [now former] hitting coach Chili Davis, according to multiple sources, yet felt he had no choice but to give in to the wishes of at least a few of his star hitters, most notably Kris Bryant and Anthony Rizzo. "He caved," was the way one person close to the situation put it. "He's not happy about it. He thinks it's BS that the players complained about Chili, but he wasn't going to stick with his hitting coach just to make a point."

    • The Dodgers appear to have a deal in place with Taiwanese right-hander Lin Hui-Sheng, with Liberty Sports reporting the news and CPBL Stats tweeting it along. It’s believed the youngster will secure a $300K to $350K bonus if and when he passes a physical. You can read more about this reputedly live-armed 20-year-old here, courtesy of CPBL Stats. Injuries seem to have interfered with Lin’s development to this point, but it seems the Dodgers will have an interesting new arm to work with.

Almost all of them are shit, there are a few that are looking good for now or were great(ARod's first contract), but for the most part they all look fairly shitty by the end. Beauty is also in the eye of the beholder as some of these monster contracts look bad in the grand scope of things, but resulted in WS wins (ARod contract 2, Heyward, Price, Teixera and Sabathia in the Top 20). The Top 30 has a big chunk of players that haven't won it all and still many would argue that even though they may be of good value, their contracts are ultimately failures. If the Dodgers won the World Series with one of these high priced guys that turned around and killed their future potential, I don't think anyone would complain really.

    meh ...
    • According to Andy Martino of SNY, Yankees GM Brian Cashman has been involved in recent discussions concerning Rockies third baseman Nolan Arenado. No official comments have been made to the press yet, though, and it’s not clear whether the Yankees would prefer to pursue Arenado prior to the 2019 season or partway through it. The 27-year-old infielder earned his fourth consecutive All-Star nomination, Silver Slugger, and Gold Glove award in 2018 after slashing .297/.374/.561 with 38 home runs, a .935 OPS, and 5.7 fWAR across 673 plate appearances. There’s no question he’s provided immense value to Colorado’s lineup over the last half-decade, and his consistency and incredible power at the plate helped form the basis of the record $30 million arbitration figure he presented to the team last week. The Rockies countered at $24 million, however, and in doing so may have jeopardized their chances of convincing the infielder to forego free agency in 2020 and take a long-term deal instead. Assuming he declines to negotiate an extension with the Rockies, Arenado’s decorated résumé and career-best 2018 numbers should attract plenty of interest around the league — a reality that could put considerable pressure on the Yankees (or any other interested party) to finesse a deal sooner rather than later. For now, the club is prepared to enter the 2019 season with hot-hitting third baseman Miguel Andújar, whom Martino speculates would be the “centerpiece” of any trade with Colorado.
