Matt Kemp 'won't accept' bench role
    By Mark Saxon | ESPNLosAngeles.com
    Updated: February 14, 2014, 4:14 PM ET

GLENDALE, Ariz. - The Dodgers might go into the 2014 season with four everyday options for three outfield spots, but one of those players has now made his stance crystal clear. Matt Kemp said he's not a bench player.

"I'm not a fourth outfielder. We can cut that off right there," Kemp said. "I won't accept that role. I can't accept that role."

The Dodgers held their first full-squad workout Friday and, for now, the surplus is a non-issue. Kemp has yet to begin running as he recovers from October ankle surgery and has acknowledged he likely won't be ready for Opening Day, which comes about a week early for the Dodgers against the Diamondbacks in Australia.

Kemp, however, is expected to return in early April. Assuming he, Carl Crawford, Andre Ethier and Yasiel Puig all remain healthy, Dodgers manager Don Mattingly will have to figure out some combination to keep all four players in the mix.

The Dodgers listened to trade offers for Kemp and their other outfielders this winter, but no teams made an offer they found particularly tempting. Presuming Kemp proves he's healthy by the end of spring training, those talks could revive.

"The [general manager], his job is to do what he does and I'm going to do what I do. My job is to help the team win," Kemp said. "We've all got decisions to make and responsibilities. I'm sure it'll all, you know, come out the way it's supposed to come out, but I can't worry about things I can't control."

Kemp, 29, batted .324 and led the National League in home runs (39) and RBIs (126) in 2011, but has been beset by hamstring, shoulder and ankle injuries the past two seasons. He had a career-low .723 OPS last season in 73 games.

Kemp said he has no idea when he will be cleared to run this spring, but that his swing feels more powerful than it did coming off his first shoulder surgery a year ago. It took Kemp until May 20 last season to hit his second home run. He had a second, clean-up procedure on his shoulder shortly after the October ankle surgery.

"I couldn't really get through the ball. If anybody knows my swing, when y'all see that go up in the air like that," Kemp said, lifting his left arm over his head, "you know something good happened. I was cutting my swing off. I couldn't get extension, man. I couldn't do a lot of things."

Maybe he should actually play in more than 120+ games before making these comments.

Yeah, I mean there's no doubt that he's the best one out of the four, but shut your mouth and stay healthy for once. Just gets annoying. I feel like Kemp doesn't think before he speaks.

oh, come on now. let's not act like this is the 1st time that Kemp's said this. he didn't just offer these comments...he was asked a question and responded...i'm fine with it. more than anything this tells me that he's pretty confident in where his shoulder is strength-wise and i like it. if Kemp were all passive in his comments, that's when i'd be like " aaww shit. we have a pussy on our hands. he's done. " i love it when a star on my fave team bristles at a question...i'm a Shaq/Kobe-Kareem/Magic Lakers fan. i've seen it before.

does he need to get on the field and walk the walk? obviously. and personally, i gave him a lot of shit when he got hurt by not hustling this last time. a lot. shit, i still wouldn't mind if they traded Kemp. that said...he's on the team and the past is the past. make the best of the future. all i know is the Kemp we saw in that Nationals game was back, Jack. he needs to take his time and get his ankle right, come back, and just play the game the right way and use his brain a bit more. if one of the guys feels he wants to shut Kemp up...by all means...flex some leadership and shut him up. hell, play better and make sure Kemp does sit on the bench. Ethier...hit a left hander. whatever. i see no bad that could come of this.

Kemp is a whiney bkitch but lets not forget that he can be a beast. He was on a long streak of playing ball games and was healthy for a long while. He has had a bad string of luck..yeah yeah..I know..he didn't hustle and fucked up his ankle...Before that he hustled too much and ran his azz into the outfield wall..He might never stop swinging at outside junk but if he gets healthy again and is the Kemp we all know can mash then he's the best we got period... He needs to shut the fuck up...get healthy...put in his work and get his azz back on the field where he will help this fuckin team win a ship!.

Oh and his agent is a tard..I never thought I would say this but Id rather have Scott the fuck face Borazz represent the Bison than Dave the whiney bitch Stewart.

Sorry matt. Your agent has already said you aren't healthy yet so until you are I hate to break this to you.....but you're the 4th OF. That is until you get healthy and become the 1-3 OF I don't give a shit which one then get hurt again doing something stupid. Then guess what....you're back to the injured fourth OFer. But go ahead....keep listening to your good for nothing jibber jabbering agent.

The fact that this question is even being asked is ridiculous. How about asking him if he learned how to slide again or has stopped running into walls full speed or better yet if he's learned to stop swinging at sliders low and away in the dirt.

It's a compilation of brilliant, humanitarian, caring people that that make up the Dodger roster. It's also a bunch of moronic, childish, Homer Simpson-like baby-men who are millionaires.
It's just that more really stupid shit seems to be said and acted out by our boys...Matt has been doing it for a while now, and is joined in his head shaking dopiness with Yasiel, easily his equal. Yasiel is actually dangerous to other human beings; Kemp. pretty much to himself and the Dodgers exclusively.
But there guys like Clayton, who one can only admire and be proud of.
And it is LA, not exactly a one-horse town with no media buzzing around constantly...
It, in the end, doesn't matter what jerky stuff they say, as long, when the season ends, they've earned their wage and do what was expected of them.
It will never stop, and going for the beau coup pussy is only a young man with an erection stuff.
Maybe he'll wind up in a cornfield, playing catch with his son, like Roy Hobbs in the movie "The Natural". If he does all the other BB stuff before that that Hobbs did, then good for him. I wish him that actually....
Or he could wind up like Hobbs did in the book, which was way different than the movie.
It's up to him...all the birdseed that comes with him, amounts to jack, really.
Just annoying...maybe he should listen and subscribe to the Cosner Doctrine.
