I believe Martinez is supposed to be a top notch CF too, sounds like a good problem to have.

It couldn't have been Heredia, he was one of the top prospects out there and my personal favorite signing thus far.

Maybe I'm crazy, but if a player has all the tools to be a very good CF, then he has all the tools to play RF and LF too, with a little coaching. And just maybe that opens the door down the road to trade Puig (as irish has opined) as his contract draws to a close, and resigning him becomes more expensive. Could be the best of both worlds, getting value for Puig in the last year(s) of his contract while maintaining/improving the offensive/defensive level of the club.

nah son there ain't so many good reasons to trade Puig if he starts hitting again.

there is that little "if" word again though... so I guess that we'll all have to teeth gnash until then

Of course if you can play CF you can probably play RF and LF, but it's just about maximizing your value being good in CF.

Not saying trade him now, trade him when his contract is about to end, before he resigns for mega-bucks. Unless of course his performance is elevated to the next level. But if he is no better than Joc or Martinez by 2017/2018, then the FO would be nuts not to move him for pitching.

Yeah, so Joc/Martinez in center...then determine who is the 3rd best OF and can be retained least expensively.

As long as you're speaking with an eye of patience we're good... if Puig isn't still a perennial All Star in 2017/2018 then trade him

Absolutely, wouldn't trade him now unless it was a Don Corleone deal. He's affordable as hell now, maybe not so much in a contract year.

Giants are reportedly co-front runners with us for Eddy Julio Martnez, the #1 rated International prospect. CANNOT be outbid by those bastards!!!!!

    Latest On Eddy Julio Martinez
By Charlie Wilmoth [July 9, 2015 at 5:25pm CDT]

Top Cuban outfield prospect Eddy Julio Martinez remains unsigned a week after the beginning of the July 2 international signing period, but the Dodgers and Giants still lead the race to sign him, MLB.com’s Jesse Sanchez writes. Both teams have workouts scheduled for Martinez in the coming week.

The Cubs, White Sox, Rangers and Astros also have shown significant interest. Sanchez points out, though, that the Dodgers, Giants and maybe the Cubs have the edge, because Martinez’s bonus, likely to be eight figures, will incur maximum penalties for the team that signs him, including the inability to sign any player for more than $300K in either of the next two international signing periods. The Dodgers and Giants are already on pace to incur those penalties — the Dodgers’ expensive current class includes $16MM signee Yadier Alvarez, while the Giants’ includes $6MM signee Lucius Fox. The Cubs appear likely to incur maximum penalties as well. The White Sox, Rangers and Astros have not incurred such penalties, so they appear to have at least some incentive not to sign Martinez.

MLB.com ranks Martinez the No. 1 prospect available this signing period, comparing the 20-year-old to Andruw Jones and praising his power, baserunning and defense. Baseball America’s Ben Badler (subscription only) is less bullish, suggesting Martinez’s power leads more to doubles than home runs and noting that not all scouts believe he’ll stick as a starter in center field.

I feel like he is ours if we really want him, at least that we won't be outbid. It's probably more of a which situation would you rather be in? The Dodgers young talent is significantly stronger than that of the Giants and we have a development system that is striving to create the best all around experience for the young guys. Seems like a no brainer, but he may want something where he has less of a chance of being blocked short term. Though with this ownership and FO, that doesn't seem like much of a problem. Though it does somewhat worry me that Badler is not gaga for him as he is the Cuban guy.

I think some of these guys can be lured by really stupid reasons. For example, the Dbacks stole that Lopez kid from us even though we offered more; but he signed with them because they said they could "get him to the majors quicker". Da fuq does that even mean?

I know that's just one instance, but who knows.

I think that teams could use that against us. "Hey look, these guys have spent all this money on [x] position, you won't be able to crack that for [y] years, but here you're a starter when you're ready. Thing is, Giants do have him somewhat blocked too, Pagan and Pence aren't going anywhere and Aoki and Belt are going to soon be fighting for playing time in LF. If the plan long term is moving Belt to LF and Posey to 1B, he's not gonna get a shot until 2017 at the earliest. Dodgers would bring him up if he was ready before that as ScottDre GuerrFordAndez wouldn't block him if the hype is real.

I definitely get what you're saying, but if I were in the same situation as these kids, I'm just looking to get paid. We've learned time and time again that if you put up the numbers, someone, somewhere will make room for you.

Yes. He will sign. Sources tell me he is still being evaluated.
