Yes. I enjoy winning and he would help us win more times than we are now with our below replacement level catchers. Keep AJ for the Kershaw games though.

I mean, we'll have like the 26th pick anyways, just sign the dude.

I would feel bad for NZ, but he is a Dodger fan tried and true, and he'll grow to accept it.
If we don't get Russell, if we can, then we'd better get somefreaking body else then two guys that can't hit .200. I mean that's poor. Very. A huge hole. I guess there will be lineup after lineup now with his name inserted, along with Lester's.
I posted weeks ago, that I don't really feel like the Pirates will let Russell escape..he has become their cornerstaone, and they need him more than anyone else on the team back there.
But Ned better wake the fuck up and get someone back there.

Wieters should be on our radar if Martin's not an option. coming off TJ surgery, scheduled to be full go by opening day 2015..scheduled to be a free agent after next season..Orioles might put him on the trade block. Ned could make a move for him or give Ellis another year and go after Wieters in free agency. but the problem with going after Wieters in free agency is he obviously plays in Baltimore and he might jump up and hit 30HRs in that launching pad next year and then you're forking over more loot for him at that point. Baltimore's done OK without him - with a young guy in there, but it'll be interesting to see how much they value Wieters..they'll probably low-ball him in a contract offer and then ask for the world for him in a trade. Lol

give up the late 1st round pick for Martin or give up the late 1st round pick for Shields? how's about - give up the late 1st round pick for Shields and then trade for Wieters?

Fuck no. We're good at C right now. Ellis will come up big this post season. Nothing good ever comes from calling up your ex girlfriend. What's next? Calling up nosebone and seeing if he wants to platoon? Fak that shit

VRP is going to love this, but I feel like bringing Russell back should be our top offseason priority. He's a douche, but he was our douche.

Russell Martin set up for big payday [IMG]
By Buster Olney | ESPN Insider -- October, 28, 2014

Russell Martin finished second among all MLB catchers in WAR in 2014.

KANSAS CITY -- The final innings of the 2014 Major League Baseball season will play out here in the next 36 hours; meanwhile, executives from 28 other teams and dozens of agents are lining up for the start of the offseason, like runners lining up for the opening gun of the winter marathon.

There is enormous curiosity within the industry about how many dollars will be paid out in the pitching market, given the relatively high volume of elite starters that will be available in one way or another over the next 13 months. Will Max Scherzer get offers of greater than $144 million (which is how much he reportedly turned down from the Tigers in the spring)? How much will Jon Lester get? Will the Reds seriously consider trading Johnny Cueto, who is headed toward free agency next fall? Will the Nationals be able to lock down Jordan Zimmermann? Will some agents try to move quickly to grab a share of the available dollars, in anticipation of what could be a pitching market depression by late December?

No such questions hover over Russell Martin, who might be the best-positioned player in the free-agent market this fall, because he is a one-of-a-kind luxury item. He is the Lamborghini of the catching market.

Martin will be 32 at the outset of the 2015 season, coming off a year in which he had a .402 on-base percentage, fourth best among all hitters with at least 400 plate appearances.

the more I think about it the more I'm scared about his potential contract coming off a career year, but I'd still take him back

Martin's had better years than last year. especially considering he only caught 107 games.

realistically, and considering his age, he'll probably only catch about 110 regular season games on average over the next 2 or 3 years. he'll play his best wherever they can spell him and still win ball-games without him in the lineup. otherwise, him getting a large amount of money and missing as much time as he probably would for a team that's less of playoff contender is gonna see him receive a lot of scrutiny and play under a bunch of added pressure.

Dodgers are probably the best fit..he could get the appropriate amount of money for his talent, sit some games and have AJ catch 50 or so ballgames and not receive much flack about sitting since the Dodgers would likely win a good amount of Ellis' starts anyway. 4yrs/55M..if i'm the Dodgers i wouldn't offer more than that even if other teams were bidding. by the 4th year he might be splitting time down the middle with Leon. if he's tryin to get like 70M from teams with less of a shot at making the playoffs, leave him.

As I've written many times before, if they need him, sign him. And spend millions and millions, do I care? Buy the guy Canada if he wants it.
Or give it to someone else if they are available. Are any of the posters here chipping in on this? Reads like it.
There are guys out there who got a quarter of a billion dollars or near it, and took 'roids and were banned and others that melted down like ice cream in July when it was most important. So if this guy gets a million or 20 more than he should, so what? Big deal. How many more superstars do we need?
The NLW was won with the three (count 'em-three) worst catchers there are on the planet; this is what our long standing GM had for us), so get somebody else. Or not. Overpay. Or don't get anyone and wait for AJ's career year...in the end, what's the difference with what we do in the post?
Find a way we can start Greinke every game in the post season if we get there again. Maybe that will help change things one time. Just one. Or maybe a manager that is not 100 miles over his head with this team. Russell will tell him what to do anyway and how much he'll play, hands down.
Nah... let's stay with Donnie...he's a good guy and from Indiana and all that stuff; and he was a really good Yankee, too. What more do we want?

Yeah, when he was young. He's gonna get a big deal and he's gonna decline. Writing is on the wall.
