The draft is a couple days away so I figured lets organize all the stuff in here

    We have the
    24th pick in Round 1
35th pick (Compensatory - Hanley Ramirez)
    67th (Round 2)
74th (Compensatory - Trade with Orioles)
    101st (Round 3)

So basically we have 5 top 100 picks
We'll have 7.78 million to spend on rounds 1-10
the respective allotment at each pick:

Not sure what our draft philosophy will be with new management
But if I were to guess i assume we go slot/underslot with our first pick and then over slot for the next few picks
And then end with some seniors who will get like 1-10k at most for their bonus

From 2010-2014 the Rays went slot or under 4/5 times.
The one time they did not they were ironically picking #24 and took Taylor Guerrieri and paid him a 1.6 M bonus (slot was 1.242M)
The Rays pretty much drafted prep and college players at equal rates with their first pick in recent years
4/5 of last 1st round picks for Rays were position players

    Possible 1st round draft targets

    Mike Matuella RHP Duke
Had TJ surgery and is out til around March/April next year. Tall ass nigga at 6'7" 220. Before injury offered plus FB and plus slider. FB velo was around mid-high 90s.

    Ke'Bryan Hayes 3B HS
6'1" 205. Plays a good SS. Not the best speed/feet so mostly projects to 3B where he would be a plus defender. Potentially 7 grade defense at 3B. Not much present power but good bat and swing so could happen.

    Nate Kirby LHP Virgina
6'2" 185. Season shortened due to injury. Low 90s FB but struggles to find a consistent second pitch. Flashes potential plus CH and SL. Command and control aren't great either.

    Jacob Nix RHP IMG Academy
6'4" 200. From Los Alamitos. Good delivery. FB hits upper 90s. His secondary pitches show potential but each need work. Fits a reliever profile imo

    Kolby Allard LHP HS
San Clemente HS. Doubt he drops this far but would be awesome otherwise. He's small statured for a starting pitcher at 6'0" 175 and he had a lower back injury so im hoping he gets passed on. Has plus CB/FB

Josh Staumont RHP Azusa Pacific U (At pick 35/2nd round)
Hard throwing with solid size. 6'2" 205. Included him because he local as fuck.

    Nice write up.

Most mocks have the Dodgers getting Matuella, Hayes or Aiken

    Appreciate
    Wouldn't necessarily mind either

I think Matuella would need to be overslot if we take him at #24. This years draft is relatively weak so i suppose it wouldnt be a bad idea to take the talent. Not as if we would be passing on great talent later on. Definitely could see this

Aiken im still unsure of. The health concerns really put me off. Wasnt his UCL medically determined to be smaller/weaker? than average?
His delivery was clean so the injury is somewhat concerning. I'd probably pass

Hayes I like. I think he'll hit and the defense is plus at 3rd and possible elite. He's the one I want at 24

good stuff man. Really like Allard, his PG All American performance was amazing

I have a feeling that Aiken is our guy though. If he's available I think they go with the upside of an ace

Fuck the Hayes guy, anybody with an apostrophe in their first fucking name has issues. Change your name, then we'll think about it.

Good stuff. I used to do draft threads on the old ESPN board for the guys... haven't been too invested in baseball recently. Still dealing with the same RL stuff I had going on last year.

I think we're going to lean towards the upside, injured pitching. (Aiken, Matuella, Allard)

Personally I'm still hoping for Aiken if the medicals don't look unrecoverable from, he might be the best talent in the draft healthy, it's worth a shot, especially with our haul of selections early on in the draft. Either way I'm excited for Monday night!

Going to watch with a couple of friends tommorrow. Going to be interesting because this is probably the first time in ten years I haven't paid attention to any of the pre-draft stuff. Looking forward to IFAM more this year...

Doesn't Tommy John Surgery replace his UCL with another ligament from his own body though? If so, wouldn't that make it no longer small and weak?

Yes but the rumors are he has a (potentially) more serious issue. Something to do with the bone or blood flow surrounding the arm/elbow.

We don't have a single protected pick do we? Meaning we fail to sign our pick in the 1st, we don't get it back?

  14. chris

    chris Guest

Nope. But I don't expect them to pick a kid who won't sign.

Thanks for the link. When was the last time we had this many picks in the top 100? 2007 we had three I recall (Withrow being one, can't remember the rest).
