plus we can burn through some of those pitchers we figure wont be on the playoff roster while keeping the others from being overworked.

    i think you misunderstood me
totally agree that kaz and meh should both get every opportunity this spring to show what they've got
i just don't think they should be the de facto #4 and #5
wood, stewart and stripling should also all be given the same looks

A long time ago in a galaxy far,
    far away....

    • Outfielder Jerry Sands has signed on with the indy ball Somerset Patriots, per a club announcement. While plenty of former big leaguers land in the independent leagues — with a fair number making it back — it’s quite a surprise to see Sands take that route at this stage of his career. The 29-year-old Sands has seen action in five MLB campaigns, including last year with the White Sox, compiling a pedestrian .238/.303/.367 batting line in less than 500 total plate appearances. But he has handled lefties at a productive .285/.335/.477 clip in the majors and has been rather productive during his six seasons of action at Triple-A (.266/.351/.478). Sands did fall well shy of that mark during his time at the highest level of the minors in 2016, though, which may explain why he failed to attract a strong enough opportunity to land with an affiliated club.

I almost got hooked up with the independent team Long Beach Breakers back in the day.. just couldn't justify it being a father of two. I often look back and think about how fun it would have been to play under Steve Yeager especially being a catcher.

Back in those days there weren't many Indy ball teams. Along the way in Adult leagues I've played with some talented guys who signed Indy ball deals and one even made it to the show.. John Holdzkom

Now I pour all my baseball knowledge into the kids.. hopefully they grind hard on the field and in the class room. Become their own Beasts!

Not that this is relevant here or anything. Just thought I'd share..

Already thrown away basically half that. You don't determine rotations off of sunk costs, you chose the 5 best and Wood is one of the 5 best. No doubt Wood will get a shot and I have more faith in him capitalizing off that then either Yips McCarthy or Scotty Crapsmear

Appreciate it. It was truly a no brainer though.. Was slated to make like 800 bucks a month.. Team folded 3 years later and became the Armada. Glad I was once thought of as good enough to play with those guys though. Probably could have parlayed that opportunity to a MILB rookie level gig. Not good enough beyond that tho..

I think this is going to be one of the best ST's ever. There are still a few key spots up for grabs, and an injury or something will inevitably open up another spot. We get to see a lot of quality guys trying to make a good first impression for the season - and even for the guys who don't make the 25-man, their ST performances will go a long way to setting the pecking order for the rest of the season. Will Ruff make the team? What do we actually have in McCarthy, Kazmir, and Puig? Can Kiké play SS? Is Forsythe excited about the new X-Men movie, Logan? A lot of things to watch for.

Why you gotta bring us down all the time, bruh?

    Basically a 26yr old prospect.
I halfway expect to see Puig on some of these prospect rankings/lists for LAD when I browse through them.

So because McCarthy has been a sunk cost thus far, it makes sense to throw away the rest of both his and Kazmir's contracts? That is not how a business is run. They are going to do the same thing they did with Kemp and at the least try to regain some sort of value from them. Now if one or both of the two comes out and is absolutely shitting the bed, all bets are off. In the event that both are looking like serviceable starting pitchers, the jobs will be theirs(also unless some trade comes along). If the rotation was built on the 5 best starting pitchers in the organization, then yes, Wood would likely be in the rotation, but he would also be behind Urias who is also not likely to be in the starting 5. Hell in that scenario, Stewart is probably ahead of Maeda if the fade last season was due more to hitters adjusting and not him wearing down. Keeping Wood back for now is not the worst thing in the world. He pitched 60 innings last year and likely would not be ready for a full slate. The season is a marathon, not a sprint. If holding Wood and Urias back early means we have both those guys stronger for the stretch run, I would certainly prefer that.

I remember when he first came up and we all made jokes about him being 40 and not 22 like his Cuban birth fortifications said. Man, he proved us wrong.

Exactly, specially after we pull that mega deal.

    Villar, Braun, Torres.
    For...
Toles, Verdugo, Brock Sewart, Strippling, Kyle Farmer, Yimi, Kike, SVS, Kazmir.

    Vs Right
    2B: Villar
    SS: Seager
    LF: Braun
    3B: Turner
    1B: Gonzales
    RF: Puig
    CF: Joc
    C : Grandal

    Vs Left
    2B: Forsythe
    3B: Villar
    1B: Braun
    RF: Puig
    SS: Seager
    CF: Gutierrez
    LF: Trayce
    C: Grandal

With Forsythe as the super utility player.
And have almost as many at bats as a regular starter as he can fill in for Villar who can fill in for pretty much anyone on the team.

edited version of espn's "player on each team with something to prove" article...

Los Angeles Dodgers: Scott Kazmir puig
The Dodgers have so much rotation depth that they aren't likely going to get too far into the season with a struggling starter, even one such as Kazmir, who is slated to earn more than $35 million the next two seasons. Kazmir struggled with back and neck injuries for most of the second half of the 2016 season, which cost him a shot at the Dodgers' postseason roster. Kazmir wasn't that great even before that, though, as he struggled with location on too many days. His rate of 3.4 walks per nine innings was his highest in a full season since 2010. However, Kazmir's strikeout rate (8.8) was strong and his velocity was as good as ever. We've seen Kazmir bounce back before. But given the Dodgers' options, he needs to come out sharp -- and healthy -- this spring.
    puig sucks
