Now that we are actually in the off-season some of this can be discussed:

First, the NL West could be a walk over (like AL Central level) if the rumors of the D-Backs selling off Goldschmidt/Greinke and the Rockies selling off Arenado come to fruition.

Second, the payroll, cots contracts projects a 2019 payroll of ~$173M filling out the 40-man roster, including 13 arb cases (a couple of these will likely be Rule 5 casualties), this also assumes Kershaw does not opt-out.

    https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/12Fdcz-v1dHv7WUA6N73JhLNL7cZ-JCaUSRyh8LQvG7A/pubhtml#

Finally, how do they use the new found financial flexibility? Cost cutting this season was a waste (despite getting back to the WS) if they don't actively try to upgrade the roster.

I guess he was joking, apparently added that to the end of the quote that is getting thrown around. Unless it was a return to the Nats, this would not be ok as it’s against the rules to negotiate with FA’s already.

The Dodgers are the strongest brand in Southern California, and I don't think their market share is affected by the Lakers, Clippers, Angels, Kings, Rams, etc. But I do sense apathy in the fan base right now.

I think it's critical they sign a star FA and get the games televised this off-season. They got under the tax and there is a lot of young talent ready to contribute. This is an opportunity to re-calibrate and reintroduce yourself to the market as a fun, young team.

Hey if the Rockies wanna sell off Arenado, he's like Manny Machado except you know, he actually doesn't dog it running and isn't nonchalant about everything.

    Yeah...
...Nolan is another guy with home/road split concerns and has not shown the 'clutch' gene at all.
He's super competitive but it doesn't help him, sadly.
I may have a selective memory, but I haven't been impressed with his bat and I think we'd be disappointed with him.
I'd stay away from that guy.

We have 3 days until Kershaw decides to stay or go. One of the greatest players in Dodgers history, and one of the greatest failures. It's been a long time since Kershaw came up as a rookie, and whether or not we prefer it, it would be weird to see him in something other that Dodger Blue. What say everyone? Do you want him to stay? Go?

    Peace.

Appreciate what you did for us (during the regular season). Not trying to have a serial choker back with our club, when the goal is to win a championship and he can't be relied on in big games. Plus, I think most of us have some legitimate doubts about whether or not he will continue to be worth his contract as he ages.

Voted for leaves, think they’ll bring him back at like, 5/125. Hope not.

Even if he only plays out the rest of his current contract, 30-35MM per or whatever it is over the next couple seasons, who wants to see a 35MM guy sitting on the DL for month(s)? And then obviously, we know what's ultimately at the end of the rainbow, have seen enough episodes..despicable postseason starts from the same expensive player. Fuck that.

They'll work something out where they add on 2-3 more years, maybe even before he actually opts out on wednesday.

Hope he opts out, Dodgers do their due deligence, and some team like the White Sox offers him 7 years, 210 million and we say “well, we tried”.

I think he returns though by reworking his current deal.

Our starting pitching will be fine. Our front office and management team have always been good about getting good enough years out of #3-#4 types and there’s no point in spending for an ace when he’s not going to be great in the playoffs.

Adding one or two years to his deal at a lower salary is the only way bringing him back makes sense. He still remains an effective pitcher but he is no longer the dominant player he once was. I doubt he gets 4/120 in this market.

    Potentially unpopular opinions incoming:

I think Puig and/or Wood could be moved as 40-man casualties, Verdugo needs regular Big league ABs and they will have an excess of starters as it is if they bring back Kershaw/Ryu with Urias being added to the mix, they are likely to need to clear ~5 spots, as many as 7 for Rule 5 purposes, right now they are at 39.

DISCLAIMER: Obviously, if they get Bryce Harper, Puig and Verdugo can kick rocks.

The way Kershaw was answering questions after the game, it sounds like he is really hoping for an extension.

I think the FO needs to be firm and just say that's not on the table. 2/$70 million for a guy who might be worth 4/$70 at this point in his career? Kershaw should feel blessed to accept that and hope he can piggyback his way to a ring. I actually want him to stay, but won't be heartbroken if he walks.

If the FUCKTARDS are going to look at this objectively, if he were a non-exDodger free agent now, do you think they'd even come close to signing him for 2/70? Not a chance so in that that scenario he'll just stay. Now, will he restructure down to 5 or 6 at 20MM per (starting in 2019) to end up with more scratch, not uproot and "Help the team" with payroll next year and be a Dodger for life like Kobe was a Laker, for Magic?????

Remember, at the end of the day, he's already rich as shit and a good guy at heart.

And if they do retain him, they should make it perfectly clear what his role is, and that the ace thing is in the past. And when they resign Robots, tell him, if they should ever get back to the post, he must approach it from a "non-Kershaw the ace" perspective...i.e. set up Buehler as the multiple starts ace guy.
And pretend that Robots will know what to do.
    Y'know...
    Make believe.

Kind of amazing that he is one of he greatest Dodgers of all time, and one of the biggest failures.
    Excellent post.
A weird tangent I know, but can't help my mind...do you think Adolf Hitler was one of the greatest Germans (Austrian) ?
Now that I think of it, many persons who were "great", were also spectacular failures.
