    Check out the BeeGees documentary on HBO.
    Fucking awesome. Really done well.
    Everyone thinks they created disco, but all they did was morph into the cultural zeitgeist.
    They were so much more, ultimately. And ultimately, a sad story, too.

    probably in late on these guys but first heard them at an airport in Guatemala
    they are funny as fuck but serious musicians just the same
    more i hear the more i love these guys

    this was the song i heard and shazaamed
    was a little drunk from the flight and looked it up on my laptop
    think i must have laughed for days, still do when i watch it
    one of the funniest videos i've ever seen

    They are one of the most american bands of the spanish rock scene.
    By american I mean authentic. Like the bands coming out at the time or just shortly prior.

    Most bands either ape an American style going completely overboard.
    Caifanes were my favorites but they were obviously trying to be the Cure at first.

    Others make a bigger deal of being mexican or argentinian rock band or whatever over being a rock band and need to have native instrumentation or 'deep' lyrical content.

    These guys felt similar things we were feeling in the late 90s.
    And I spent a lot of time south of the border there.
    Made my share of wrong turns.

    enjoy Kinky, Zoe, Campo, Juanes, Babasonicos and of course Mana
    picked up most of it w shazaam or watching late night Central American tv
    yeah a lot of bands are obvious imitators especially in the goth arena
    Rosarito used to have a great annual day of the bands outside on the beach of Rosarito hotel that i caught a couple of times
    fuck that was fun and what a party!
    will have to check out Caifanes

    i watched it and really felt for the guys
    sure they were primping and preening in the bright lights but they probably didn't deserve what they got either
    i remember being aware of what was going on musically in the late 70s and not having anything in common w disco ever
    so to hear those voices incessantly everywhere you went was certainly monotonous
    and they probably went all in a bit too much w the tight suits and bare chested gold chain thing lol
    i had already lived though the Elton John years when that was pretty much the only music on radio but i loved Elton
    so i was happy to see it end when Bee Gee music was forced off the scene
    still there's no denying in retrospect what a real talent they were and how they managed to endure w decades of success
    i like how they included bands like coldplay in how they made their points about backlash
    had to be devastating to go from kings of the world to outcasts in a micro second

    For me, they were always around and part of the 60s, 70s music of my heyday. I sure wasn't a disco guy...got thrown out of many discos back in the day. Not the place for a rowdy long haired hippy in bibbed overalls.
    To those that loved it though, they were a force to be reckoned with...but Beatle/Nilsson/CSNY,
    et al, fans, the Bee Gees were background noise on the box.
    Now, I realize how unique and incredible their sound was...and some of their songs were just pure songwriting and vocal gold before disco ever appeared.
    It's similar for me as I used to think "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" was the worst hokey bullshit imaginable...
    Now, I think it's absolutely precious and beautiful and a part of the fabric of Americana, just like Jackie was.

    The new music I have been listening to is bardcore which is taking a great song and playing it with instrumentation of the medieval age.
    They are getting pretty extensive with it by having linguists recreate the lyrics in an ancient language while still keeping the rhyme and the meaning intact. There are some good renditions of Immigrant song with in Old Norse.
    I really like what these nerds are doing. The nerdier ones match the theme of the song and its subject matter to the type of instruments or vocal style/language/age used.

    But in terms of contempary music I always look to the north of Mexico where Plastilina Mosh are from where lots of bands from the country go to play.
    When music scene goes south here in LA it literally means the scene has moved to northern Mexico.
    Monterey and Mexicali and Rosarito and places in between all have hotbeds of a certain type of classic early rocknroll with a picaresque edge and plenty of rogue spirit.
    Like Richie Valens energy.

    I have been talking about Vikings lately so I will start with these lol.


    But if you really want to get contemporary this is from earlier this year. This song was an internet hit and its great.
    And the lyrics are exactly what I experienced when I spent a summer in the highlands of Mexico at 17 and found heaven.
    Right away I saw how much better a life of paradise can be had with a lot less money and a lot less stress without any soul sucking work.

    Ok those songs are meta on the verge of being almost a parody. But not in a bad way either.

    You want to know a new thing?
    The dead fruit trees are all producing again.
    Avocados are coming in from various trees and the Cherimoyas and Sapotes too.
    Lots of other fruit finally growing again.
    I think maybe it coulda been that the local trees smelled that sweet smell of colitas and it attracted the birds and the bees that needed to get the bushes and the trees to bring forth good fruits.
    I hadn't had that spirit here since 2000 and 9.

    the lead singer of this band played bass in Tame
