Baseball America has released their 11-30 top prospects in the org. Some of the highlights
    • They are really high on McKinstry which makes him slotting in at 11 pretty interesting. He doesn't have star upside, but he sounds a whole heck of a lot like Kiké just from the left side of the plate and he is expected to make a lot more contact.
    • Sounds like Amaya is going to be one to watch this season. They rate him as at least a plus defender at SS with potentially more in there. They have a ceiling for him as an everyday player, but at current with little to no pop. He has improved every year offensively and they think he could grow to a solid hitter if he can fix his swing a bit more. He has a great eye which gives him a decent floor, but there is still need for improvement with the stick.
    • They were a bit kinder to Rodriguez. They say he bulked up a bunch and he got super homer happy from it. The team is working to rebuild his swing into the old one, but they are shaky on whether he is a CF'er anymore.
    • DeJesus continues to show improvement and is now showing the traits of an on/off field leader. He is likely going to fill out too much which will take him off of SS, but he has the tools to be power hitting 3B with an above average skillset. Still just 18, this dude has turned a lot of heads. He will need to cut down on his whiffs, but if it comes together, he could be a beast.
    • Omar Estevez was a solid contributor at the Alt site and the club feels he has turned into a pretty competent contributor likely out of 2B. His arm has never really improved while he has also slowed down a bit so the team does not see him working on the left side. They feel his power has also ticked up to where he should knock 10-15 a year. He could be an interesting guy to watch in AAA this season.
    • Another not so great report on Beeter. Fastball and Curve are serious plus pitches, but his control is an absolute mess. The team says they think he's a reliever at this point as there is little hope that he can get his delivery together to throw consistent strikes at the big league level. They will keep him as a starter to better develop his pitches, but don't expect him there for long.
    • They really like Mann's bat and he has continued to impress. His biggest issue is that his defense may lag behind enough to make him a guy without a position. If he can't get right at 2B or 3B, he could find a home at 1B or LF.
    • Kendall Williams has done well since joining the org, but he needs to add some velo now. For a 6'6" guy, he is gonna need to do better than occasionally touching 93 and 94. The good news is he is still young and has already shown a plus changeup to go with solid control and a polished delivery. Those are not normally 3 things you see in a big pitcher this young so he could see some jumps in the years ahead if he can gain some velo. Slider is not a great pitch right now so he will need to work on it as well. He just turned 20, so he will not be seen for a couple of years.
    • Grove gets a good report, but BA holds him back due to injury concerns and a high effort delivery. Stuff ticked up in his second year back from TJ where velo worked 92-95 over 4 inning stints. Started to regain feel for his plus curve while also implementing a slider that is flashing above average as well as change up that he tunnels well off his fastball. He'll be a guy to watch and Dodgers staff members said a year ago that this guy was gonna be the top pitcher in the org by spring of this year before shit went wild with Covid.
    • Jimmy Lewis is a lot like Williams in that he is a 6'6" dude with an advanced feel for pitching, some intriguing secondary's, a repeatedly smooth delivery and really needs to start adding velo. Lewis is a bit more advanced in locating his pitches over Williams, but doesn't have the second pitch that he does. Still, rival evaluators came away very impressed.
    • I was gonna skip Raley, but his report is interesting. Apparently he was one of the most impressive hitters at the alt site and there is feeling that this dude could be a sleeper pick that comes up and surprises some people. His biggest issue is that he is ultra aggressive both at the plate and in the field, but the dude has light tower power and is surprisingly athletic. He sounds almost a bit like what Joc Pederson was and not the prospect he was actually projected to be.
    • Carrillo saw enough gains at the Alt Site to the point where the team feels he could be a solid pen contributor. He still has severe issues with control and finding a tempo is a major ordeal with him. Still, the team elected to protect him as his stuff is filthy with a fastball that gets up to triple digits with nearly 16 inches of run on it. He is on the 40, but is likely slated for AA.

I have been cleaning up the top prospect list the past couple of days and adding some things I had let slide. The newest addition is Keith Law's Top 20. He likes our system, but like everyone else has said, the top talent is not close YET.

    • Said Gray wasn't overly impressive at the Alt site last year, but based on the other reports that I have read, this is due to the FO making him use is change, slider and curve a fuck ton more than he ever had. Law says the club saw a noticeable improvement in his curve and is now using 4 pitches. Law says he is not there yet, but this kid still has a very high ceiling.
    • Not a lot on the flavor of the month in Busch, just more of a summarization of his career thus far. He does say that his hit tool has advanced enough that he has All Star potential at 2B, but he is withholding much of his excitement until he see's him in game action.
    • The same, "I'm gonna need to see it" is what he is applying to Ruiz, but did say the Dodgers are "raving" about his improvement at the plate.
    • Here is where it get's good. He is high on Andy Pages.... really REALLY high. He gives him two elite grades with 70-grade power and an 80 grade arm. Said his worst tool is his average speed, but his bat is now trending towards the 55 territory. He will strikeout a bit, based on his mechanics, but it seems that he is putting things together at the plate and should cut back on those K's somewhat. He see's frequent AS potential and has Pages as big sleeper pick.
    • Wasn't as blown away with Miller as others were. He see's some reliever risk and gave his secondary's decent, not elite grades. Said he's more on the mid rotation starter track.
    • So like Gray, Law gave Jackson a high ceiling grade. He lumped those two in with May and Buehler as guys the club has found and opened up massive upside for them. Like the aforementioned trio, Jackson is incredibly athletic and like Gray, is late to the pitching game, but picking it up incredibly well. He is flashing 3 plus pitches, but will need to improve his command.
    • Law still loves White and thinks he would be a Top 100 prospect if he could only stay healthy. If he can get healthy, the dude could be a great starter, just needs to get there and stay there.
    • Pepiot got an elite grade on his change(70), which we all knew. He doesn't have much of a report on him, but said if he is just flashing even average control, he's a back end starter. Anything beyond that and he's climbing the ladder. Pepiot is another guy to watch that he said could leap up the charts if the rumors about how he looked are true.
    • Vargas "can fucking hit" according to one of his sources. Problem here is it is all hit, no power and he is pretty bad defensively.
    • Williams is apparently doing a lot to emulate Dustin May. He is not nearly the athlete that May is, so he doesn't see the same upside, but his stuff ticked up after joining the organization. There is now a grade of a mid-rotation starter here with more potential as well.
    • Said DeJesus still has a ways to go, but his swing is incredibly advanced for his age. Should be able to handle 3rd and the power will come in a couple of years.
    • While Vogel got shit reviews everywhere else, Law says that scouts were very impressed by him at instructs. Bat still has a long way to go, but it wasn't as horrible as advertised.
    • Skipping some that were kind of bland for now to get to a couple not great ones. The reviews on Hoese are not great. Reports were that Hoese ran out of gas at instructs, but Law is painting it as this kid can't handle advanced pitching. He will hit for power, but folks aren't all that impressed with him at either side of the coin.
    • Amaya is another dude that got a lower score than we have been hearing. He is looking like purely a UTL that may be more valuable to another team.

Read Law's story in the Athletic. Had no idea Gray was such a recent covert (2018) to pitching.

The trend for our scouting department with pitchers are A. Big guys that have mediocre velocity (Williams, Pepiot, May, Lewis, etc...), B. Athletic dudes that have not pitched a whole bunch (Gray, Gonsolin, Jackson, etc...) or C. Are coming off of a major surgery like TJ and were not seen a ton (Buehler, Grove, Beeter, etc...)

I'll say this for the recent converts........at least their arms haven't been abused by youth, travel, high school or college coaches.

So this is where the ESPN board members from all those years ago (18 years?) ended up. Last I saw this group, I believe it was on Huzzah.

You too huh?! It's good to see all these old pre-twitter (read pre-BS) names. I wish I could say I planned this, but I just happened to stumble on the board and saw some familiarity.

I used a similar line among a group of preening SC boys a few years ago in Las Vegas. "I know why you guys went to SC. Couldn't get into Fresno St." For a bunch of SC stiffs they took it pretty well.
They were probably thinking "the old man had too much wine." They would have been right.
