A few thoughts on Kimbrel: "Fuck, fuck, fuck, fuck, fuck." No seriously... 1. Some people may say he got squeezed on strike three to Gonzalez, whom he walked on the next pitch. True, but if you're missing the plate by a foot, you're not going to get those fringe calls. 2. The first batter, Davis, hit it close to 400 ft. Luckily it was to the deepest part of this park. Luckily it wasn't in another park. 3. The pitch that hit Wade would've been a wild pitch if he got out of the way. Kimbrel is all over the place. 4. Even when he does get out of the ninth, it seems pretty rare that he does it in fewer than 20 pitches (21 tonight). That's just a recipe for disaster. 5. Thank you ump for the gift strike three on Slater. This game could've ended very differently. 6. Did I mention that Phillips is pitching like a closer?
if Treinen is on it and healthy i'd rather see him close since he has a history of doing it well not that Phillips isn't good enough or doesn't deserve the chance more he doing so well setting up and idk but maybe evan williams is someone i'll need to watch closer lol have to think the team feels comfortable w their options and Kimbrel is running out of them as guys get back
Who's this Evan Williams? If you're talking about the bourbon, and taking shots when Kimbrel's on the mound... I like it.
— elsewhere, the padres newest additions celebrate being only a mere 11.5 games out of first place in their division
Happy Kershaw Day! The only thing better than a four game sweep over the Giants would be b2b four game sweeps over the Giants. Make it happen CK!
If things stay as they are, they’d face the Braves and the winner would play us round one. Who do we root for? The two seed Mets would play Brewers/Phillies which is much easier. Nice job Manfred.
definitely atlanta worst case scenario(s)… losing a postseason series to the padres would be worse than losing to the giants
Please. Nothing is worse than losing to the Giants. Agree that Atlanta is a preferred opponent. Pads are loaded for bear.
A few more baby steps for Mad Max. Hope it's not an illusion. Nice debut for Vargas. Apparently he was running on his own when he stole third. Appreciate his aggressiveness, but............ Perfect spot to bring in your best reliever (Phillips or Williams as noted earlier in this thread). There is no perfect spot for Kimbrel. Ditching the pony tail made no difference.
Re: Kimbrel. Fsudog stated it best, I believe...Barnes or Will give him a middle middle target, and just deal with the one second or so they have to adjust and deal with wherever the pitch goes. No fucking clue at all where it will wind up. We get away with it against the Giants and some degree of good luck, yeah...but, to reiterate, how does this compute against playoff teams ? Forewarned is forearmed.
Assuming a healthy status ( not at the moment, obviously) a bullpen of Almonte, Phillips, Treinen, Ferguson, Vesia and Bickford is pretty damn good. I'm not that much of a Price fan, but he is a LH. But it all comes apart at the end with Kimbrel. Where's the sense in it ?
I think loyalty in sports can be a dangerous thing but I especially don’t understand it when it is for a guy that has had 0 good moments as a Dodger. Kimbrel was once a great closer for the Braves, not the Dodgers. I get the patience with a guy like Muncy that has saved our asses many times over the years but Kimbrel? Makes no fucking sense to me. Guy has fucking reeked ever since he put on a Dodgers uniform.
There is none. I thought the Dodger coach staff, which has worked wonders with other reclamation projects, could fix him. He's beyond their help.
I think in two months, the playoffs will see one starter ( or even two) in the bullpen for the ultimate high leverage situations...I can't see the whole SP rotation starting in post.
I vote for Treinen. He has lots of closer experience and even stepped up big time in game 5 of the WS for a save vs Tampa. I love the versatility he has provided in the past but Phillips has filled that role of being the flexible BP piece that you insert in high leverage situations.
Dustin May has the potential to be the big secret weapon for a WS run. I am really curious how he’s used going forward
Wow @michaeljduarte Tonight is the first time in 104 games that neither Mookie Betts, Trea Turner, or Freddie Freeman got a hit while in the same lineup.
David Price is an example of a guy with previous top accomplishments and high salary who has been relegated to a comparably demoted role. I'm hoping that the only reason Kimbrel is still closing is that management feels it has this division buffer, so might as well give him more time to see if he can rein it in. I'd like to believe they would go the Price route with him once the games mean more. But Price accepted his new role willingly. Will Kimbrel? And if he doesn't, will Roberts be able to be the tough guy? Hard to say.
Hey stat people, why does Fangraphs WAR state Kimbrel has been the second best reliever on the Dodgers this year? Just barely behind Evan Phillips.
