Players should never agree to accept a salary cap
Even if MLB offered them something ridiculous like $500M cap with $450M floor
That would be great now and the next several immediate years that follows but the players would be fucking over literally every single guy in the future because the owners would simply squeeze them out of a percentage of revenue every single negotiation in the future
I don't want to miss baseball but the MLBPA should be prepared to miss a season or two if MLB won't come off their want of a salary cap system

Skubal, Miz and Harrison headlining the Brewer rotation wouldn't exactly be a walk in the park.

Sanchez closing in on Hershiser. Up to 49.2 with five more scoreless against the Puds.

Update.....Pads got one in the 7th. 50.2 scoreless. Not bad.

Yeah, this is a tough situation. Dodgers don't necessarily need him, and Detroit would expect more from us than any other team, so I'd want to say F them. But with the idea of having this one shot at a three-peat, you almost have to at least have a conversation to keep him out of the wrong hands. I don't know, I don't want to give up any prospects, but maybe Hope, Ward, a re-tooled Lauer, and a lower prospect gets them talking. Doubtful, but how much can Detroit expect realistically, knowing that he will most definitely test the markets when this contract is up?

It's a rare occasion when I'm happy to see the Puds score a run. Glad they did. Nice run Sanchez. Now shut them down the rest of the game.

Concur. Wife was wondering why I was cheering 1:20 before the start of the Dodger game.

    @TalkinBaseball_
Corbin Burnes suffers a lat strain during his recovery from Tommy John Surgery, setting his new target return date for September, per @nickpiecoro.

Burnes has made just 11 starts so far in the first two years of his six-year, $210 million contract.

Jeff Passan thinks these are the teams that legitimately could look to trade for Skubal:

    Dodgers
    Braves
    Rays
    Brewers
    Yankees
    Cubs
    Mariners
    Phillies
    Padres

I'm still mostly against the Dodgers acquiring him. The biggest plus if he does come to LA is that he won't be going where he could hurt us. But I still think the Dodgers don't necessarily need him, and the haul Detroit would demand is not worth it for a 3-monther. Plus Sheehan and Wrobo (if they indeed would be key pieces in a trade package) showed in their starts this week that they could be stars in LA for more than just the next three months. So with that said, here's the order of opponents that I would hope he goes to:

    1. Rays - I don't really follow this team so I don't know who they have, but if he helps them knock off the Yankees in the playoffs, I'm all for it.
    2. Mariners - They were what, one ALCS game away from being the Dodgers October opponent last year? Still, I don't think of them having a stacked rotation, and again, this could prevent NYY from advancing.
    3. Cubs - While he would help this team a lot, I don't see them being a significant threat to LAD in the postseason. And potentially it's enough to give the Braves some trouble in the divisional series.
    4. Puds - I almost put them 5th, but I decided that this team is destined for futility. It's just in their DNA. Every time they spend big money or prospects, they fizzle out. And Skubal doesn't help them score runs, where they're dead last in the NL.
    5. Yankees - Sure, this makes for a formidable starting rotation, but it doesn't prevent the Dodgers from getting to the WS.
6-8. Braves, Brewers, and Phillies - All three would have downright scary rotations with him. Atlanta probably would be last on this ranking since they already have the best record without him. But any of these teams could potentially become favorites in a series with LA if he's in their rotation, of course depending on how healthy they and the Dodgers are otherwise. Tough call here, but I'd probably go 6. MIL, 7. PHI, 8. ATL.

    Concur.

Hey ... let's make MLB more like the NBA & NFL .... lots of wealth for everybody but fans & the game's integrity.

I watched a little league game yesterday. It was genuinely pleasant to not see beer-blasted cunts everywhere & to see poor fielding & hitting but I DGAF. My boy did hit a sun-double off a lefty ... so it wasn't a bad day.

What I do hate is how they didn't keep score. But I did. We kicked ass 17-9. And our SS has a higher OBP & WAR than Dookie.

Don't let me sound too positive ... wouldn't want to mislead y'all... nor too negative... although that's my usual ....

But in 5 years, will Sho, Tucker, Freeman, Mookie even be Dodgers anymore ? With pups like Pages, Sasaki, Wrobo, Rushing, etc here now and nowhere near 30, whilst DePaula, Sirota, Hope, R-Ryan, Tibbs, & etc. .... LA can feasibly expect to have half to ALL of a starting 8 be home-grown, and half their pitching staff too!

Or not. WTF do I know?

Kemp, Ethier, Martin, Kershaw, Billingsley, Loney, Broxton, etc was a a great class of young guys that came up from 2006-08. If McDouche would've signed/picked up CC Sabathia, Roy Halladay, or Cliff Lee, that group would have won a WS.

Then there was the Seager, Bellinger, Joc, Buehler, Smith group that seemed to come up around the same time.

Been a while since a new crop of young guys took over.

Maybe if he didn't let Adrian fucking Beltre walk after a 10-win season, at age 25, we would've won a WS before 2020
We didn't have a real 3B until 2015 when we got Justin Turner
Keep Beltre, we don't trade Carlos Santana away for Casey Blake
Carlos Santana would have been a huge upgrade over Loney

Loney. Damn Loney. I loved (homo) him when he came up. Hit that homer to send the Cubs to hell ...

I really thought that 2008 team would step-up under his leadership, along with Kemp & Andre ... but oh well. Hard to believe it's going on 20 years since then.

    I'm feeling old today.

Santana was strictly a catcher when they traded him. Russell Martin had the catching position covered.

Agree on Loney. Had (and has) all the charisma of a fire hydrant.

    Don't remind me.

The Dodgers also had a deal in place for Vlad Guerrero in the 2003-04 offseason that got killed during the sale from Fox to McCourt:

"The two sides agreed on a five-year, $70-million contract that would have paid him $5 million in the first year. They had even agreed on a partial no-trade list and were planning a press conference at Dodger Stadium to introduce him. The commissioner's office privately stepped in and informed McCourt that committing to another $70-million contract could create a debt-equity imbalance that might derail the sale of the team."

no idea how the whole MLB bargaining impasse is going to turnout. would hope for us that they learned a lesson from the last one but i doubt it. if Skubal has pragmatic life advisors in his circle beyond boreass the thought of locking in $400mil is pretty heady. if he's just listening to scott it would never happen but there might be a sage dad or uncle he respects and not look to squeeze every dime he can out of his situation.
a whole lot of things can happen if this thing drags out for a year or more. lot to be said of that security and not having to worry about negotiations and where his family will live. hard to know what his motivation will ultimately be.
