Only 9th in the NL in BA (.242), but we're 3rd in BA w/ RISP (.310), 1st in OBP w/ RISP (.429) and 1st in OPS w/ RISP (.936). Of course, once we notice that our average BA is so low... it points to the main problem with our offense: getting on base in the first place. We are 13th in BA w/ bases empty (.203) and 14th in OBP w/ bases empty (.264 -- Yikes!!) We're 5th in the NL in ERA (2.96), 2nd in BAA (.189), and 3rd in WHIP (1.04). If you look at the basic aggregate stats, our bullpen doesn't look THAT bad... (3.60 ERA) -- you have to look at inherited runners scoring %: - Lindblom: IR 1, IS 0 - MacDougal: IR 1, IS 0 - Wright: IR 7, IS 2 - Elbert: IR 12, IS 6 - Coffey: IR 1, IS 1 and of course Coffey (36.00 ERA, 5.00 WHIP) and Elbert (7.71 ERA, 3.00 WHIP) in particular have sucked w/ no IR too. Jansen had two awful appearances (1st game, and last night's) but three really good ones. I'm not too worried about him. From a purely statistical standpoint, Wright and MacDougal haven't looked that bad either... granted I've only been following on Gameday so I can't comment on their pitch placement, movement, etc. I think the above numbers leads us to the question: why is DBB putting Elbert into so many situations where he inherits runners!?!? (I guess we could also ask why (a) Elbert is still on the team and (b) why DBB puts him into important situations at all). So looking at this from a purely statistical sense, does this mean that it's not so much that our BP in general is bad (we can certainly point our fingers at Elbert and Coffey), but rather poor bullpen management by DBB?
elbert is the only lefty reliever early in the season, you have to put him in when the situation dictates can't blame donnie for the fact that elbert blows donkey choad you could, conceivably, blame honeycutt -- but i wouldn't the truth is simply that elbert has a million dollar arm and a $2 head i don't think our bullpen is very strong and it will be exposed against better teams that being said, beating up on the teams you're supposed to beat is what good teams do
hopefully one the chupacabra comes back, the BP can be stronger. Maybe bring up Eo if he's doing well to start him at the bullpen. That'll give us 5 good arms if Eo and Lindblom can be be good middle relief and Bellisario can be his old self before all the DUIs and visa issues.
Agree with the above. Totally forgot about the whole LHP/RHP dynamic. Is DBB one of those managers who really likes the L/L , R/R matchups? Or was that just Torre?
A lot of managers do it. DBB learned from Torre, but I have a feeling he's gonna grow out of Torre's shadow and start doing his own thing.
Twinkies actually have it worse (2-7 XWL versus 3-6 XWL). But yeah -20 run differential is pretty bad, haha.
This is a strange year...i can't help but think that Kemp is on roids, Kershaw is hurt, Jansen is hurt, Loney will never be a good hitter again, Ethier will leave ASAP, Mccourt will buy the team back, Uribe will gain weight, we will get our asses kicked when we play a good team. It's awesome being in 1st place again!
Fox Sports giving us love: "Look, they have the best player in baseball ... it's not even an argument anymore."
