all players go through slumps and i always had faith that logan would come around and make a contribution just like i knew cody couldn't keep up that torrid pace law of averages works in both directions on good teams guys pick each other up and sometimes the momentum takes over
I have just been through so many new "saviors" for this team over the years, especially the past half dozen or so, have them all come up and amaze in their various ways and skills, only to walk away, year after fucking year, with not even a WS appearance, in the end. Relentlessly. To put that out there again, on this kid Verdugo this time, just seems like pissing against the wind, like so many other times before. Maybe better go with what we've got, wait until September expansion, then see.
i would hope that could help but he's swinging at such bad stuff at this point also just getting under balls he used to pulverize
Agree. No reason to rush him up now when things are working. I'm sure the FO is in no hurry to start his clock, plus he would need a 40-man roster spot and it makes more sense to figure that out after the trade deadline. Verdugo would also need a spot in the starting lineup. Just no reason to mess with something that's obviously working right now when we can bring him up in September.
All's good with the win column right now, but we've seen that before, so that's somewhat shortsighted. We've seen 42-8. And even if we hadn't, we should still want them trying to upgrade/complete the lineup as best they can. The the main thing is Verdugo could be of help with the ultimate goal, thinking long term goal of the season. The difference between being of help and being the reason is vast and we know in baseball, it's hard AF to be the sole reason a team wins, so that's out. But if he can help complete their lineup in terms of giving them another high average/high contact bat, especially one in the leadoff spot, and he can help limit some of the volatility they have in the order, why not? I also don't see the rush you're talking about. I mean it's July now. It's not like it's May or early June. However, one concern could be his age, he just turned 21 in May and he didn't finish last season all that strong. That said, his upside is that of a high quality leadoff man and it wouldn't hurt to see him in that role before the trade deadline, allowing them to see a clearer picture of their lineup.
Also, there was about a 20 game stretch in late May/early June where Cody had a .159/.250/.333 over 70-ish plate appearances, and many thought he should be sent down to AAA to work out whatever it was. 70 plate appearances later his line was .355/.397/1.032 for a 1.429 OPS All to say, this 5-6 game stretch isn't his first slump. Sort of relieved to see him slump a tad before the all-star break, seeing as how he'll probably be in the HR Derby..this slump before the Derby semi-neutralizes all the whining about the Derby having an effect on hitters
With his manager in an unusual position, Kenley Jansen sent a clubhouse attendant to purchase a bottle of wine so he could give it to Roberts as a token of appreciation, via Bill Plunkett of the Southern California News Group: “He’s always got our backs so I wanted him to know we have his back,” Jansen said. “I knew he was going to feel awkward watching the rest of the game in his office. So I thought, let me do something for my manager.”
I don't think it's a rush from Verdugo's standpoint, it sounds like he's ready for a drink. But bringing him up pushes someone out of the lineup, either Puig or Taylor. I think Taylor can be a difference maker in the lineup, and he deserves to stay. So that leaves Puig... Here's a question, would you bench Puig for Verdugo to see if Verdugo can handle RF in case we trade Puig? Even if it puts a black eye on Puig's trade value?
Every time I think Taylor is reverting to his past form, he kicks me in the nuts with a game like last night's.
Neither Taylor nor Puig should hold Verdugo back. Puig's trade value is what it's going to be regardless of Verdugo taking his spot because execs know what Verdugo can do, know he's a top flight spec that just turned 21, know he'll be in CF or RF for LAD eventually anyway, are likely asking about him in every trade conversation LAD has because they hold him in high regard as well. So it stands to reason that they'd understand why LAD would go to Verdugo or give him a run at a top of the lineup role. He's damn good now, get the ball rolling for a 21yr old that's this good and he could see significant growth by the time he's 23-24yrs old. I know for sure that you think Puig will still ultimately be a drag against playoff pitching, so it stands to reason that rival execs likely feel the same, right? There's a long enough record with Puig at this point to know what he can and can't do.
