They see him as a great defensive SS. So had Ozzie played in this day, he'd get even more money. It's no secret we need better D up the middle. Especially with Ellis gone.
This is an intriguing signing, if the team is really throwing this much money at the guy, you have to believe they see something special. Spit balling here as I know a lot of people are saying "what does this mean for Hanley?". Well reports are that the team has said to Hanley that if he wants an extension, he needs to know 3B is in his near future. It also sounds like he knows this and is perfectly fine with it. Both ArruebOhMyGodThatName and Seager are no sure things and neither is Guerrero at this point so we really can't predict a logjam in the IF. For fun, let's just say that the stars do align the way they should and in 2 years Seager is knocking down the door to play 3B in the bigs, Guerrero is the big hitting 2B he was projected and Arru is the best fielding SS since Ozzie. I don't foresee a move to the OF for Hanley, but what about another position that we are drastically weak with depth at, first base? Adrian will be at 3 years $66 mil left on his deal while entering his age 34 season while Hanley will be 32. The team could consider moving Adrian to keep Hanley in the lineup and of all the positions, 1B would be the best to prolong his career. When Hanley is healthy, he is a top 5 bat in the league. I wonder if in order to keep his bat around, the organization is considering this as a long term solution. Also for those wondering, BBref has both Hanley and AGon listed at an identical 6'2" 225 lbs.
Either that or the team is planning on mixing Dee's speed, range and arm with Arru's glove, first step and body control and Guerrero's bat to make one hell of a monster called Infield Puig
Saw a video of him hitting and he's a mess. BUT he's still young and if he's as good defensively as everyone says he is, then 25 mill is a steal (depending on the yrs).
Just feel like health wise it would be the best way to keep him from injury and not wear him down over the course of a season.
$25M is a shit ton unless it's like a 7-year deal, and giving a deal of that length to a light-hitting player wouldn't make a ton of sense.
But like I said, that's like a total best case scenario which as we know, never happens. You have to look at it like this, IF Arru plays ++ D while learning to swing the stick somewhat, IF Guerrero hits and plays the above avg D they thought he could at 2B, IF Seager turns into a top 5 3B prospect, IF Hanley hits like he is capable of while staying healthy and signs an extension... then what? Chances of that happening???
good question...how about this...C.Seager and AJ Ellis to Seattle for Mike Zunino and let's try and cure our catcher position long term. Seattle is gonna have open ears for a potential all-Seager left side of their infield...they can't ignore that offer and AJ is a solid MLB catcher. maybe we get something else, a bullpen arm or so, but the basis of the swap is Seager for Zunino. i could see LAD going for something like that before they deal AGon. AGon is pretty much the rally cry of the Mexican side of our fan base...which is obviously huge.
yeh, even for the Guggengods, investing that much money means either they're just trying to add talent that they could eventually move in a deal/help short term OR that somebody who was already with our organization could be dealt in a couple years. i love it though. i'd rather wonder " wtf are we gonna do with all these talented players?!? " than sit around and say " fuck...we got nothin goin on ". lol sign me up for this position any day. add all the talent, sort it out later. if only the strong survive, how can we not eventually win a WS?
