I don't care if they rot in prison ( or Lori sent to NZ's basement for his punishment- whatever could it be ?), but 40 years for doing rich douchebag stuff, and John Walker Lindh is getting out next month ? Just seems like something's really, really wrong here. Being a traitor and an enemy combatant is less serious?
They locked up Martha Stewart for lesser insider trading that 90% of Goldman $achs traders do every day.. they wanted to make an example of her. Now she's making coin again with Snoop Dog and she's a hero to a different crowd Not at all. I'm guessing that some DA's career arc benefits less from locking up Lindh than Loughlin
The word I'd heard last night was a member of the construction crew was taking a smoke break and was puffing away too close to a bunch of turpentine soaked rags of which the fumes lit and he ran. The reconstruction work on ancient timbers was as dry as a matchstick and went up in an instant. Does this mean Phillip Morris Altria is partially responsible? Not that they're ever on the hook for anything. I also read that this steeple was rebuilt in 1860 due to rot issues with earlier wooden members decomposing so that exact steeple itself is 'only' 160 years old. On a slightly more positive note prior to the recent reconstruction efforts a team had brought in a high resolution Leica camera system on a tripod and digitally documented the entire interior cathedral surface so at least there is a record of what needs replaced / rebuilt.
News reports were saying that all removable artworks made it safely out of the cathedral Fresco's which were abundant and richly applied.. not so much
Agreed. This is about career paths. You can rise by prosecuting serious, difficult, and substantive cases (ie the hard way), or be the lead in a highly publicized case that gets your name out like Martha Stewart, Barry Bonds, Enron, etc (ie the side door). You can try to scale or measure a case’s importance in the relative scheme of things all day, but it really comes down to what will advance my career and seems like a slam dunk. That being said, this Loughlin chick and her entitled slimeball fashion husband are dumber than rocks. They dangled a cush sentence in exchange for a guilty plea. Instead, they plead not guilty and now face 40. Remember that they committed multiple counts of fraud (including wire and tax fraud), conspiracy to defraud, and it’s a federal case. The laws were not necessarily designed to capture college cheats, but what they did was the same as any Mafia outfit doing the same things to hide, embezzle or money launder their funds. Whoever told them to plead not guilty should be disbarred for malpractice. They have audio. They have the head of the operation as the chief snitch, and others invoked pleading guilty that will bend over as fed witnesses the millisecond the prosecutors say “let’s make a deal.” And all this for two vacuous morons for daughters. I guess the apple does not fall far from the tree.
I’m most worried about the pointed arches along the nave. It looks like a few of them collapsed in the fire. Those will be devilishly difficult to repair and replace. The whole cathedral relies on the combination of the arches, flying buttresses, columns and framing for the thing to stay up. It’s the force of the high ceilings pushing down on the walls which cause an outward force that is then balanced by the flying buttresses pushing inward to counteract this lateral push. You lose that balance and the walls may want to fall inward. The walls are so thin and punched through with the stained glass, it wouldn’t take much. Also without a roof, there’s nothing to prevent water and rain from seeping down into the cathedral. There is a lot of work to do, and quickly.
I read that Macron promises all will be restored within 5 years as millions of dollars of funding arrive within hours The older style of large scale construction are indeed very difficult to restore precisely as you've noted. Without the weight of the roof pushing the walls outward the flying buttresses have no restraint in pushing the walls inwards. Massive pole jacks may not even be enough to withstand these immense pressures. Still 5 years is a long time for these pressures to withstand
The Jeopardy kid won over 100 large tonite, making his total over half a mil. Guy's a brilliant juggernaut. Incredible range of knowledge.
Too busy paying settlements for you know what. In all seriousness, the Vatican has to think long and hard about this. Should they save all Catholic cathedrals all around the world, big or small? Will they tolerate Louis Vuitard banners during the restoration? Slippery slope.
he's totally changed the game the other players are trying to keep up w him but he's up four of five thousand before the game even starts the jennings guy did 2.5 mil over 74 appearances and he has 550 over 8 or 9! and he says he wasn't into school so i have no idea how he knows so much never seen anything like it but if he goes down it'll be on one of his massive bets guy is all in all the time and i think his job is professional gambler
poor person has no business going to USC, it may rot his soul. if you cant pay you should not be going to USC.
The holy see has the right or the biblical mission to take the money of god to retrofit old expensive architectural artwork? I thought the money of god was so there could be ample food in the granary. Now I'm no stickler for literalism but its a big step from feeding the needy to recreating ancient works of art for the tourist consumer. Seems like something got lost along the way.
.. no really..Thanks for the biggest smile yet today Although you might admit that all tourist visitation dollars DO go to the same church coffers.. thus feeding the church itself DOES permit it to feed the needy for longer.. or better
Two very significant claims not being made by 'other' Organized Religions Oddly your link cited the number as 20.8% which actually is closer to the 17% of total charitable giving. I suppose ideally you'd want the charitable giving to meet or exceed your % of the population but in terms of the billions involved it's honestly pretty close. Again I wonder about the other OR's giving rates fully expecting theirs to be markedly lower than their own population rates. Didn't waste the time to verify but I cannot imagine that the Mormon church contributes squaduch outside of Utah, as one example. I wouldn't be surprised to learn that evil, completely for profit, Scientology gives nary a red cent. Fear not, having traveled in many places in Europe I cannot see a time when the Catholic church is relegated to obscurity. Simply too many epic cathedrals, churches and parishes.. not to mention their own country, nearly all of which are the standard bearer to all other OR's and revered by even heathens, pagans and atheists. LOL. Also the Catholic Church owns some 177 Million acres around the globe making it the globes third largest landowner, so they aren't going anywhere anytime soon. Historically we should note that the intrusion of Islam into Europe has ebbed and flowed over the centuries. Many parts of Spain and France were owned and run by Muslims for centuries before popular revolt. In contrast the Catholics during the Dark Ages ruled/ruined much of Western civilization for 500 years but are still held in higher regard there today as far as I could tell.
