I'm slightly shocked that 61* hasn't been mentioned more. One of my faves.

Great flick. Slipped by my recollection obviously, but really great.

Not a superb baseball movie, but on my honorable mention list is Long Gone. William Peterson and Virginia Madsen ... decent little movie.

My three favorites are Moneyball, 42 and Bull Durham. That said, I love just about any movie about baseball.

For me, *61 lost a lot of it's luster since it came out in accordance with the whole home run surge. Once the whole steroid thing happened, it kind of ruined a bit of the movie since the beginning and end are both about those runs. Still a good baseball movie, as I have watched it recently, but the whole McGwire thing at the end makes it a bit more cringey for me now.

To McGwire's credit, however, nobody made him treat the Maris' like royalty the way he did. True, he's a roided up maniac and he doesn't deserve the credit he got doing what he did ... but MLB treated Maris like a dirty diaper for decades before trying to even give the guy a dose of respect ... and then he up & died on them. The f**king Spankees only gave him a plaque a year before he croaked because they knew he was dying, the pricks.

Anyway, yeah, M-Mac didn't earn it like Roger did, but at least he acted like a gent about it. Maris' family was disappointed, but they still like the guy, and he apologized to them.

Yeah, I have never understood why baseball treated Maris like such shit. I get that he was not the warmest dude in the world, but it was not like he was evil. I definitely came away hating the NY baseball media a bit more and that has carried over into a continuous feeling for me today.

Pretty simple really. He wasn't Mickey Mantle, the golden boy despite his off the fields foibles.
