Friedman is probably attempting to take advantage of his Japanese ethos and convince him into coming back at a reduced rate to make it up to the club, with incentives if he does.

That was some bullshit last year. I had a long post about it the other day, but decided to just delete it. People don’t realize(or remember) that the expectation was that the tax was expected to be about $220M last year and go up from there. Then the non-large market team owners got together and fought to bring that number WAY down. I remember reading that the dodgers brass was pissed about how it all came together. Nothing they can do now about it, but it’d be nice if people actually understood why the team can’t continue to throw around money under these new circumstances.

Guess they can't pay guys tens of millions to play elsewhere anymore? What a bummer for them, being so close to Christmas and all.....

I thought that after Darvish's first pitch in game 7. Dave brought the 4 pitch hook for Strip but let Morrow and others get shelled? WTF was that? Respect, stupidity or both?
    Have at it, brother! :)

Juan Castro leaves organization for new job in Mexico
by Matt Borelli | Dodger Blue — 12 minutes ago

While it’s been a quiet offseason for the Los Angeles Dodgers in terms of player transactions, the club has experienced plenty of turnover in the coaching and front office departments.

Former director of player development Gabe Kapler left the organization to accept the Philadelphia Phillies’ managerial position. Among other departures include Kapler’s top assistant, Jeremy Zoll, who accepted a position with the Minnesota Twins to become the their farm director.

The Dodgers also saw assistant hitting coach, Tim Hyers, promoted to the Boston Red Sox’s lead hitting coach position. And most recently, bullpen coach Josh Bard exited the organization to become the New York Yankees’ bench coach under new manager Aaron Boone.

In a media session at the Winter Meetings, manager Dave Roberts revealed that quality assurance coach Juan Castro was the latest member of the coaching staff to depart, per Alanna Rizzo of Spectrum SportsNet LA:

Castro, 45, joined the Dodgers’ coaching staff in 2011 as a special assistant to the front office and later served as the Minor League infield coordinator in 2015. The following year, in Roberts’ inaugural season as manager, he accepted a new role on his staff to become quality assurance coach.

In that capacity, Castro primarily assisted the club with its infield defense and was a spectator of every game, where he offered key input to the rest of the coaching staff.

Gota love how Wittman glazed over the Baez WHIP.....which was average at best and would signal that his ERA needed to be higher. SMH.....

But why do I get the feeling these trades maybe more on the cost cutting side than trading for some real immediate help.

    in hindsight
they probably should have thrown everyone but darvish out there
could have started wood on 3 days rest, and followed with kersh on 2
both ultimately pitched (6 shutout innings) anyway
of course easy to say that now

Pirates are said to be ready to move on from Gerrit Cole. Has 2 years remaining, but return for a pitcher who has basically been league average for two years could be steep. How much better is a guy gonna get when he’s taken away from Ray Searage?

True but basically the same team will be behind him so if the assumption is that our defense kept it as low then it should stay low. :D. I'm not married to the guy as a set up man by any means but as a member of this pen he has value. I'm hoping that Cingrani can prove to be the set-up to Kenley, showed good signs the last half.

I would not mind MGT asking for Cole and Cutch.

I dunno about Cutch or Cole or any of those guys.

I think the FO is wedded to the idea of small 1 year contracts for rehab projects in the BP and then call it a successful off season.

If all this talk of cash flow and luxury tax is true, any move will be viewed from the cost effectiveness side.

Kershaw may opt out....and this team doesn’t seem to be able to or is unwilling to sign giant contracts and be able to dip below the tax.

If they sign any SP, I’d be shocked. I can hear them low balling Darvish already. If they cheaped out on Morrow.....then why expect more?
