You haven't worked concert security until you've worked a Grateful Dead concert.
Did it once... kid went in the bathroom, and came out balls naked. I mean starkers as the day he was born...I had no idea what he was on but just made him get dressed rather than take him to holding. The kid was from Oregon, following the Dead to every city they were playing. Their whole tour.
Did the Stones, Elton John, Bowie...had little trouble until the Billy Joel concert, where an off duty cop from Long Island, punched a girl in the jaw and hospitalized her for dancing in front of his row. We wrestled this guy down, he was strapped I saw, thought to myself this asshole would shoot one of up in a NY minute. All the while screaming " I'm on the job"!
Luckily, a trooper showed up up from nowhere...we took him down to the security area, they told us "good job, thanks, now leave".
They beat this guy severely about the head and arms.
Fun and games at old Giants Stadium...

Some of these fuckers don't get that some of us don't give a flying fuck about their views on politics. Shut up and play. You're good at it.

Bill Walton during his days with the Blazers?

Did the smell of the cannabis overwhelm the stench of the BO from that crowd?

Like these two bad asses....Steve Hunter and Dick Wagner, who also played with Lou Reed on maybe the greatest live LP ever, Rock n Roll Animal.

was never a huge dead fan but appreciate jam music and my attorney is always wanting to take me to shows so i go now and again
i saw furthur a couple of times and you pretty much need to be high just to feel comfortable in the crowd
lots of burners begging for whatever and all that smelly freak shit
but i have to say the crowd flow was pretty interesting to be a part of
the later it got the higher the crowd was and getting from one place to another involved weaving in and out of some very high people
and they were really good at it w very few people bumping into you etc. sort of like my experience seeing a london concert
i remember standing w like 4 lawyers drinking beer and talking about it when i spotted a fat drunk dude in the distance
he was NOT flowing and he had begun to weave in and around people and things barely avoiding catastrophe over and over
he kept getting closer to our group kinda like a blindfolded rhinoceros and at the last minute i said "watch out"
and he split through our group and went down face first in a splat on the walkway
    that had to hurt

I don't get the Greatful Dead. Never have, never will.

Maybe one of the most overrated bands in history in my opinion.

A special breed, these Deadheads were.
When I was going through the employee gate to show my credentials, it was next to a line of concert goers cars...fucking hours early, mind you. Lots of out of town plates. No one even in the booths yet to let them in.
I look over at the fence, and here's two broads squatting and each taking a piss in broad daylight. They actually smiled at me as I was compelled to focus on the undulating streams emanating from their little hippie joytrails...
    Well, maybe not so little.

Yeah so much for peace love and pot.

His personal life and back and forth lawsuits are another deal altogether.

These deadheads I run into now and then are just rich a-holes who have nothing to lose and always a place to go back to after acting like clowns at their concerts.

Didn't care for much of his stuff outside of that great live LP.

Was by many accounts a major league asshole. Reportedly treated everyone like shit.

Your opinion but truly one of the greatest bands to ever play music live for people... fucking amazing sober or on drugs.. just such a talented group of musicians. Two drummers!? Keyboard, two legendary guitarists, Phil Lesh on base? That's just scratching the surface man...

To each his own but definitely not overated lol.. they are the ultimate underground rock band. Radio play??? Haha what radio play...? Casey Jones? Truckin? Lol

The best GD songs din't even make radio play... they refused for many years to shorten songs to make them radio playable.

    Grateful Dead are Ledgends

True, most people were just zoning out and enjoying what they liked, and they fostered a huge faithful fan base.
Weren't for me, but at least I knew who the Doodah Man was...I used to hear "like the dude I am" all the time, instead of the correct lyrics...when I told them, they would say " who the fuck is the Doodah man...man"? And some of the people had the tat with " keep on truckin' " underneath. Shit, I still have my R. Crumb comix with me. No matter where I move.
I do however, appreciate what a long strange trip it's been.
