I honestly can't believe Joba hasn't signed. He isn't great but lots of owners on other teams playing dumb when he's an easily available upgrade over many options on other teams

It would be sweet to sign him on top of our monster payroll and watch him succeed and flip off the other teams for not getting him

    joba would be an asset
could do a closer by committee and/or whoever's hot until kenley returns
and then having joba set up [or whatever] only strengthens the pen

Apparently every single Dodger (including position players) reported to Dodgers camp today except Kenley Jansen (for obvious reasons).

I'd say no to Joba simply because he has that Yankee stank all over him.

how is it that some people can say so much without saying anything at all?
    truly an art...
and maybe why print media is now almost obsolete...

Anticipating the Dodgers' spring training like never before
by Steve Dilbeck | Los Angeles Times — 7 hours ago

Come on, come one, come on. Can we do this already? This waiting has been a killer. Spring training should have started last week, or maybe last month.

It’s supposed to be the same every year, but for some reason this spring’s start seemed to take an eternity. Maybe it’s because of all the Dodgers’ new pieces or new management or simple curiosity.

    What have the Dodgers wrought?

    Let’s get it started, hah!

The Dodgers won 94 games last season, captured the National League West, were shoved aside in the first round of the playoffs by the Cardinals for the second consecutive season, and then all hell broke loose.

A blowtorch was taken to the front office. President of Baseball Operations Andrew Friedman, General Manager Farhan Zaidi, Senior VP of Baseball Operations Josh Byrnes, Director of Player Development Gabe Kapler, VP of Amateur and International Scouting David Finley, Director of Amateur Scouting Billy Gasparino, Director of Player Personnel Galen Carr, Special Assistant Pro Scouting and Player Development Jeff Pickler – all spanking new.

They got busy too, particularly Friedman and Farhan. There are 18 new Dodgers on the 40-man roster this spring. Maybe four new regulars in the daily lineup. A revamped bullpen. Now a need for an early-season closer. Two new starting pitchers.

What has the Geek Squad wrought?

So many questions. Will the power loss of Matt Kemp and Hanley Ramirez really be offset by a supposedly deeper lineup? Will an improved defense translate into an even more dominating rotation? Will the roster prove more functional? Will starters Brandon McCarthy and Brett Anderson actually stay healthy?

Say this for the Dodgers, when the pitchers and catchers report this morning at Camelback Ranch, the team won’t lack for intrigue.

How will Yasmani Grandal and A.J. Ellis split time at catcher? Does Joc Pederson step up and win the centerfield job? Will Andre Ethier win a spot or be traded? What happens with Alex Guerrero? Can Carl Crawford make it through the entire season? Will the latest, greatest Cuban import show up next week? Do we get our first looks at phenoms Corey Seager and Julio Urias?

Answers, we must have answers. There’s a new emphasis on “analytics.” How does that actually translate, aside from the inevitable pocket calculator giveaway night? Will all those new faces in the bullpen mean real improvement? Does peace and harmony in the clubhouse render more victories? Are they actually going to "battle" more with each at-bat and be stronger fundamentally?

Spring training has finally arrived and now the answers can start coming forth. It’s taken just short of forever. Curiosity abounds with the Dodgers like maybe never before.

Let’s get it started, in here!

wow, could miss 2015 as well...

Jurickson Profar To Undergo Shoulder Surgery
By Steve Adams [February 19, 2015 at 3:17pm CST]

3:17pm: The specific reason for Profar’s surgery will be to repair a torn labrum, tweets Andro.

2:58pm: Rangers top prospect Jurickson Profar, who missed the entire 2014 season after twice tearing a muscle in his shoulder, will undergo right shoulder surgery on Monday, tweets Anthony Andro of FOX Sports Southwest. As MLB.com’s T.R. Sullivan writes, Profar had previously been throwing from 105 feet without any major discomfort and undergoing an MRI every three weeks to monitor his progress. His most recent MRI, however, showed increased strain on his subscapular muscle, prompting the decision for surgery.

The Rangers will not announce a timetable for recovery until the procedure has been completed, Sullivan notes, but Evan Grant of the Dallas Morning News tweets that his expectation is for Profar to miss the entirety of the 2015 season. Grant also notes that doctors recommended surgery for Profar as far back as September.

Profar ranked as the consensus No. 1 prospect in baseball heading into the 2013 season, receiving that distinction from Baseball America, Baseball Prospectus, MLB.com and ESPN’s Keith Law. He made his debut as a 20-year-old that season and homered in his first big league plate appearance, though he went on to struggle, relatively speaking, to a .234/.308/.366 batting line in 324 plate appearances that season. (That line, of course, is likely more than most 20-year-olds could muster at the MLB level.)

News of another likely serious injury is of course a crushing blow to the Rangers, their fans and Profar himself. However, Profar is still quite young, as he’ll turn 22 years of age tomorrow. In other words, despite being two years removed from ranking as the game’s top prospect, he’s still more than a year younger than Kris Bryant, who many believe to be baseball’s current top prospect. There’s plenty of time for Profar to recover and go onto a meaningful career, but it’s nonetheless troublesome to see injury problems of this extent at such a young age.

With Profar out of the picture and Luis Sardinas traded to the Brewers, the quartet of young middle infielders the Rangers had has now been reduced to Elvis Andrus, who will again man shortstop, and Rougned Odor, who will now likely fill the second base role unchallenged in 2015.

Another thing..or an angle I should say..is that maybe Hamels is the scapegoat now for what was probably gonna be failure on Amaro's behalf anyway. Amaro can say to ownership.." Hey, I had these teams where I wanted them before Cole blabbed and ruined everything. "

I mean ownership could always respond with a " bitch, you've been having discussions regarding Hamels since last July ", though, but they've given Amaro the benefit of the doubt for while, so who knows?

One of the important questions Dilbeck left out, IMO..."will Don Mattingly know when to take an obviously spent pitcher out in a super critical situation, or will he continue to make the same mind numbing mistakes over and over again"?
Yeah, maybe it's only me, but that's a big IF in my book.
He's had a good team, post season worthy under him to manage multiple times, and also managed to have it all end before it should have by not doing what was neccessary.
A WS picked team, or at least a NLW, or a NLDS/CS picked team, with a bottom half ranked skipper in MLB...might be the killer move the Tink Tank didn't make.
I hope the team's just too good to be ruined at the end....

Dodgers Spring Training: Trade Talks Focusing On Relievers
by Vincent Samperio | Dodgers Nation — 45 minutes ago

It was a busy winter for the Los Angeles Dodgers, and it may not be done yet.

The Dodgers were active in trades, finding themselves with a new middle infield, among other things. Though they were able to add a few relievers through separate deals, they bullpen took a hit this past week when closer Kenley Jansen underwent surgery on his left foot. He will be out for 2-3 months, leaving the Dodgers with a void in the later innings.

According to JP Hoornstra of the LA Daily News, the Dodgers are having trade talks surrounding a specific area of the roster:

    J.P. Hoornstra @jphoornstra Follow
Andrew Friedman says that current trade talks are focused
solely on relief pitching, though that could change. #Dodgers
    1:18 PM - 19 Feb 2015

Since Jansen went down, the Dodgers have been linked to free agents Rafael Soriano, Francisco Rodriguez and Joba Chamberlain. Despite these rumors, Andrew Friedman has mentioned that the team is looking to replace Jansen internally. Jansen will be out until May, meaning the Dodgers will need a closer for at least a month or so.

Judging from rumors, one name that may be brought up is closer Jonathan Papelbon from the Philadelphia Phillies. It would appear unlikely though, because of his price tag and the fact that he would return to the bullpen once Jansen is healthy. Based on their interest in Chamberlain, the Dodgers could just be looking at depth in the bullpen and not specifically a closer.

Any potential deal will have to happen soon in order to get that player into camp and ready for the season.
