Report: Dodgers' Hector Olivera does not need Tommy John surgery
    by Sean d'Oliveira | CBSSports.com
    Mon, 18 May 2015 6:59 PM ET

After another medical review, Dodgers infielder Hector Olivera will not require Tommy John surgery, a source told BaseballEssential.com

Olivera was dealing with an elbow sprain, which appears to be fully healed. Olivera recently signed a six-year, $62.5 million contract with the Dodgers.

maybe Puig and Olivera will have a shot to play a bit together in the minors.

Looks like Ryu may need shoulder surgery, and could be done for the year.

On the bright side, if this is true, he would need two 200+ inning seasons for his 750 inning opt-out to vest (currently at 344 innings). So they likely get him for 2018 at $7M.

Absolutely devastating news. For now, and the future. Pitchers coming back from shoulder surgeries aren't always near the same so who knows what to expect from Ryu moving forward. Got two great years from him so far but man, this really hurts for 2015 and 2016.

Dodgers need to trade for at least 2 starters probably, and at least one of them being elite. I know injuries happen but fuck, this screws up a lot for the pitching staff on the field and negotiating tactics off the field. Gonna have to either pray someone from the farm comes up big or probably have to overpay for two starters. Hope the offense continues!

    Hector Olivera Passes Dodgers Physical
By Jeff Todd [May 19, 2015 at 11:57am CDT]

Much-hyped Cuban infielder Hector Olivera has passed his physical with the Dodgers, Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports reports on Twitter. Presumably, an official announcement of his signing will be forthcoming in relatively short order.

Olivera, 29, reportedly inked a six-year, $62.5MM deal with Los Angeles back in March after something of a roller coaster of a signing process. The deal is said to include a clause that would grant the club an option for a seventh season in the event that Olivera requires Tommy John surgery on his right elbow.

The signing has, if anything, grown all the more interesting given developments in the interim. The Dodgers already looked to be loaded at second, third, and the corner outfield — Olivera’s potential positions — before reaching the deal. While Juan Uribe has struggled offensively, players like Justin Turner, Alex Guerrero, Enrique Hernandez, and Scott Van Slyke have been remarkably productive off the bench. (And that’s all before considering starters Howie Kendrick and Andre Ethier, who have been excellent, and a variety of other options in the infield and outfield.)

Olivera, obviously, was signed more as a long-term piece than to fill an immediate need. But given his age and salary commitment, it would be surprising if he does not receive a look at the big league level this year. That being said, the club’s array of options leave it in no rush to speed his progress, and Olivera will presumably be afforded plenty of time to adapt to the professional game and prepare for big league action.

With the deal set to hit the books, though, we can begin to look forward to a time when the roster crunch becomes all the more pressing. The Dodgers could well be on the market for pitching, and one wonders whether one or more of the team’s many interesting position players could be parlayed into arms.

    - Kazmir would fit Ryu's spot pretty well.

i'm completely giddy about how frias and bolsinger have performed thus far
but i'm pretty sure they'll soon come back to earth
frias is essentially a one-pitch thrower
and bolsinger is john ely 2.0, a guy with no velocity who relies solely on mixing up his pitches and hitting his spots
the good news is we have a lot of talented depth [especially at 3b and the of] and won't have to settle on acquiring a scrub like crapuano or malhomo like in year's past
i don't think we'll go after a top end guy, but with the likelihood of greinke opting out at season's end, who knows?

Rafael Furcal retires. We had some great years with him and I have some great memories of him. Too bad he got injured or else he would've been a cornerstone for us.

The thing I will remember most is his introduction for his at-bats. He will always remain my favorite name that Eric Smith announced. Shortstop, number 15, Rrrrrrrafael Furrrrcalll!

I guess I'm out of the loop and all, and obviously missed some pretty bad and serious news about Ryu...since now everyone is referring him as a long-term (the whole season?) DL guy. IDK when that all happened, but last I knew, it was expected that he return in early June.
    So what happened anyone?

pedro was notoriously lazy and selfish
    and beginning to regress/decline
he was also temperamental and not very bright
i remember him once throwing his bat at david cone after being hit with... wait for it... a changeup
gibson didn't insist pedro be traded, pedro sulked and brooded his way off the team

Agreed there are NO big names coming this season and while this news is disappointing maybe Zach Lee FINALLY gets a chance??? Kenley is basically a 1 pitch pitcher so it can happen but of course that pitch is devastating lol. Remember too we still have Beachy recovering and expected back in mid June I believe.

    depends
with our #3 and #4 starters out, we have a #5 pitching in at #3
now anderson has been good, especially lately, but he's not a #3 imo
frias and bolsinger have also pitched well, but it's pretty unrealistic to expect them to continue
and you'd have to think if there were better options in the minors we would have tried them
one thing pretty apparent... for whatever reason, they aren't real keen on zach lee
there's been rumblings about the a's scott kazmir
but i wouldn't be surprised if we went bigger
guys like ethier, guerrero, turner, svs, kíké are doing well and [thus] could be appealing to other teams
