So glad we got rid of him. At least Wood has the potential to be productive.

Do people think this is an FO coup? Didn't they pay millions for this guy in the Cuban frenzy?
I could be wrong and maybe it was actually a clever thing to get Wood (?), but curious as to how most regard this Oliviera thing....

Yeah it was a bad signing. But they did a decent job rectifying it.

Joe Mcgrane is such a prick. Saying Puig's throw was "just a 1 out of 10 play for him"

It was a bad signing because Olivera made it so.

Just another case of fame and fortune being too much for an individual to handle.

You are correct but in a foreigners case especially coming from a 3rd world country I even expect it. Which makes it even more a crapshoot.

Carl Crawford is expected to get activated from the DL tomorrow. Dave Roberts valued another game with an extra reliever coming out of Coors

Jordan Zimmermann pitching tonight, the guy I wanted to sign instead of Kazmir hasn't allowed a run so far this year in 3 starts. Plus he signed cheap compared to that crazy market last season.

Easy comeback is he signed for 7 years, which puts him in his age 37/38 season. He would have been a nice signing at 5 years/140.

He took that deal because it was where he wanted to play. He lives up there and wanted to return home so the Tigers got a bargain, unfortunately(though there were a lot of warning signs in regards to his arm). People forget that guys like Zimmermann, Miller and O'Day all turned down likely more money to return home for where they were comfortable. Can't be frustrated with the FO for that, completely overspending to force someone to go where they are not comfortable does not always work out for the best(see Crawford & Pablo to Boston, Haren to Washington, etc... There is also another thing about following a California team, the taxes to play in the state are some of the worst in the country(if I am led to believe what I have read in other reports). So it may be a bit harder to compete with other teams in that department, especially now when our FO is trying to be smart with the salary cap.

I get your point, and defer that you are way more up on these things than I am, but was Pablo forced to go to Boston? Really?

The signing didn't workout, but there is more to it than, "they stupid, 'nother dumb move". Unlike Arruburrena and Guerrero, this was actually the current FO's signing and it was likely the reason that Int'l scouts were unsuspectingly fired soon after. Also unlike those other two, Olivera was actually one of the top players in the Cuba at the time of his defection and had shown that he could handle Int'l competition and was more than capable of handling his position of 2B and 3B. He was regarded as possibly the best hitter in Cuba at the time not named Guierrel. Both Guerrero and Arru were met with huge "WTF'S?!?" upon their signings, but Olivera was regarded as a great signing at the time by Int analysts. An overpay a bit, but they could eat that money last year knowing they were already over the cap and they had to as the rumor was that he was going to the Braves until late in the game. It was believed he would miss a bit of time getting ready and then would likely slide into the middle of the order and be the teams 3B for years... but then someone (Turner as well as Guerrero) started off the year on fire and it made him less of an immediate need. Then he got hurt and set himself back with no place for him on the roster when he was ready. I think the FO did a great job of then seeing they had a chance to acquire young talent and moved him now for essentially Wood(who may be headed for a bullpen role) and through a separate trade by nabbing Montas. That looks like a pretty good get to me for basically only money. It stinks that he didn't work out, but this is the prime example of Friedman's thinking, he saw his chance to sell high on a guy and took advantage of it.

Wondering if they do send down Trayce or go with a 7 man bullpen, and send down Libby. Problem is that gives us only 1 lefty. Can see an argument either way, cause Trayce might not get many at bats but also, I find it annoying to have an 8 man bullpen

I guess "forced" is not the right word use, they just overpay a ton to make it near impossible to turn that money down. I think most people that watched Pablo on a regular basis knew that was a steep, steep overpay. The only folks that lauded the deal were the ones that saw him only in the post season and didn't pay attention the trainwreck that was regular season Pablo.

Trayce needs regular AB's against RHP. He has the talent to be really good, but using him just against LHP is not going to help with his development. I would not have a problem with the team sending him down for a little bit. I hope they don't send Lib down, he has been great out of the pen thus far. Only thing with him is, Roberts needs to not overwork him as his MPH's do seem to suffer as a result of his workload. Though if they send down a pitcher, wouldn't it more likely be Lee that gets the hook?
