Should the Dodgers re-sign Kenley Jansen?
WITH JANSEN CONTINUING TO BUILD CONFIDENCE IN HIS NEWLY REFINED SECONDARY PITCHES ALONG WITH AN UPTICK IN VELOCITY ACROSS THE BOARD, SHOULD THE DODGERS ATTEMPT TO RE-SIGN HIM?

Kenley Jansen has hit free agency for the first time since signing a five-year, $80 million contract with the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2016. The franchise all-time saves leader (350) is coming off a resurgent 2021 season where he posted a 2.22 ERA, 3.08 FIP and recorded 38 saves in 44 chances.

The 34-year-old closer was especially dominant after leaving the mound to a chorus of boos at Dodger Stadium, following a blown save against the rival San Francisco Giants in late July.

After blowing his third consecutive save since the All-Star break that night, Jansen was absolutely lights out for the rest of the way. From July 23 until the end of the season, Jansen was among the league leaders in 1.17 ERA (9th), 0.72 WHIP (4th) , 2.35 FIP (15th), 36.2 K% (9th), 1.0 fWAR (4th). Opposing hitters batted just .114 against him, which was the lowest mark in the league against qualified relievers during that stretch.

Most importantly, Jansen never blew another save the rest of the way going 17-for-17 in save opportunities. Further, the dominance ‘The Big Fella’ displayed during the last two-plus months of the season carried over into the postseason, where didn’t allow a run in seven innings of work, with 14 strikeouts to just one free pass.

The two-time NL reliever of the year benefitted from a more dynamic pitch mix that saw his cutter usage drop to a career-low 58% and his slider usage increase to a career-high 15.4%. Additionally, Jansen continued to build confidence in his sinker that he threw at a 26.6% clip that served as his best put away pitch at 29.6%.

With Jansen continuing to build confidence in his newly refined secondary pitches along with an uptick in velocity across the board, should the Dodgers attempt to re-sign Kenley Jansen? Well, if they do, don’t look for Jansen to be giving LA any sort of discount.

According to AM 570’s David Vassegh, the three-time All-Star is going to follow the money in free agency.

"I could see Blake Treinen becoming the Dodgers' closer if the price gets too high for Kenley Jansen. He is going to take the largest contract he possibly can because for all intents and purposes, this is his last opportunity at a big contract in free agency after being arguably the best closer in baseball last year. An old friend, Don Mattingly, has engaged Kenley Jansen in talks. The Marlins and Jansen are in talks."

Should the Dodgers make an aggressive offer to Kenley Jansen, and how much it would likely cost to retain him. And, if Kenley were to sign elsewhere, who would be the team’s new closer?

    fuck no
we've seen what kenley does immediately after signing a multi-year deal
gains weight, doesn't work, becomes ineffective, sulks
no surprise he pitched the best he has in years in a walk year
makes you wonder how good he could have been the past five seasons
    pisses me off actually
at 34, and allegedly following the money, let him be someone else's problem

I'd be okay with him on a one-year deal with an option. But that doesn't appear likely since he's looking for one last payday. I really want to like Kenley, but it's hard to get behind a guy who's not a team player.

Walk. Let’s not be hypocritical about it. After years of nonstop complaining about him, this is our opportunity to cut bait and go in a different direction.

Appreciate him stepping up big time this postseason for a change but I think it’s time to move on

    exactly right
you could see his petulance on full display when he thought he should be in the game the last few years
sick and tired of the last guy on the team that won't sacrifice for the good of the team
him coming in in the 6th through 8th would never have happened

He threatened to quit baseball when they tried to convert him from a catcher to a pitcher, too.
    Can't stand him.

Again, I'm going on record as saying there isn't going to be a 2022 baseball season. I'm probably wrong [again] and I'm probably full of shit [which is absolutely an again] ..... but the fact is, baseball needs a ball severing moment, and this is it.

After the 1994 strike, I swore I'd never come back. but I did, because I'm weak. I've been back for a while, but I ain't coming back again, so this is my chance to tell baseball to go fuck itself because I think the 2022 season is done.

So anyway... In a few months when they're back playing again, and this post looks like a ranting nonsense that it is, I just want to say that I wish all the players the best, and all y'all here the best [/sarcasm]

Ok ... seriously ..... everybody on this board deserves good things, but every major league baseball player deserves to die in a fire, because ther've ruined this game in my opinion. I don't have any room in my heart for these people anymore, and the poorest MLB player has been been paid made more money in his short career then I've made in the last ten years of busting my ass teaching. iIf I were a welder or a landscaper or a busboy, I'd care even less. I have no sympathy for these people.

Just think ... if Kenley NEVER pitches in a baseball game again, and never cashes another check for the rest of his life, he's earned more in the last three years than the average American 20 year old would make if he worked until he was 100 years old. I'm not even a socialist I think that's horseshit.

    Fuck these guys. Seriously.

    Epic rant, per usual.
That said...they make so much because people consume the product, no?
All my buddies complain about sports going soft, greedy, and woke (right, double right, triple right) but they're still checking the scores when we're golfing and nutting over their fantasy teams.
I tell 'em until they stop consuming the product, it will never change.
I'm not telling people to stop watching it if they enjoy it, but the loudest critics in my circle are still die hards.

Baseball imitates life they say, and life isn't fucking fair, that's for sure...all I can tell you is that Kenley'sheart condition, which I have myself, could raise it's ugly debilitating head at any time. And the fact that he's young and a giant is not a safeguard...there's little rhyme or reason to it, and he may deal with it at any time, no warning, as I have been multiple times in November. You just never know with Afib and it's many problems.
It's like ham and eggs...for the chicken, it's all in a day's work.
For the pig, it's a lifetime commitment.

    Thanks, Devil.
You deal with health shit all your life, and say, " well fuck it, I'll just do what I've got to do, and get past this bullshit"....and go on from there. Keep knocking down the brick walls in your way, just like always.
But there comes a time in most everyone's life, where your health really does become a slippery slope, and there's no doubt, you'll be dealing with it from that point on.
It sucks, but it is what it is. Yup.
Guess I'll cut back to only one 8 ball per week now...and just got a 5.9% raise in SS, too! Fuck!
