I may have been wrong using the words "large margin" but they are getting younger and building their farm plus cutting the fat off the roster.

They also just gave away their starting catcher and don't have anyone to replace him.

Everyone seems to misunderstand which is partly my fault but I'm not worried about them beating us. I'm just pointing out that they are improving while we are spinning our wheels. One could argue that we don't have a real starting catcher either, lol.

It does not sound like the D-backs will be players in the free-agent market when it comes to pitching this offseason. Stewart made it sound like he'd like to take the money saved in the Montero trade and hold it in reserve in case the team is in contention and wants to make a move in-season. And if that doesn't happen, he would have more money to spend next offseason.
"Though we do get money back into the organization, I'm not too sure that it's smart to spend it right now on pitching, especially when the market, in my opinion, is not the greatest market for pitching," Stewart said. "It will be a better market next year."

Yeah, we haven't done anything yet, but I don't understand why everyone is freaking out. This isn't the same team we'll have when the season starts; they'll do something.

Not freaking out personally because I knew that the Gnats are worse now but I was scratching my head at all the speculation. I guess today I can be happy stuff is getting done until I find a way to criticize it later lol. :D

    The Andrew Friedman Experience
The Dodgers already have made enough moves to last three winters, but Friedman and his group never stop trying. Even after trading Kemp to San Diego, the Dodgers are still motivated to move Andre Ethier or Carl Crawford if the right deal presents itself. And if they want to build a super rotation, they could always jump into the Shields hunt or the middle of the Hamels trade talks. Friedman's overarching goal at the moment is two-pronged: (1) Collect as many good players as he can, regardless of whether the Dodgers have an immediate opening or need; and (2) put the Dodgers in a position where they're lighter on their feet and they can spring into action quickly when they see players they value down the road.

Kasten believes Dodgers need to avoid getting "too old"
by Matthew Moreno | Dodgers Nation -- December 13, 2014

In the Los Angeles Dodgers organization are three elite prospects — Joc Pederson, Corey Seager, and Julio Urias — who they refused to part with at the trade deadline last season and signs point to them being intent on keeping the trio.

However, general manager Farhan Zaidi said at the Winter Meetings the Dodgers would be open to a trade if it were the ‘right deal.’ The Dodgers’ refusal thus far to part with any of the three is tied to the their focus on not only building to win now, but also the in future.

While speaking at the Winter Meetings in San Diego, Dodgers president and CEO Stan Kasten expanded on the importance of keeping youth in the organization, via Ken Gurnick of MLB.com:

I always stress becoming younger,” Kasten said. “Payroll is a byproduct of youth. You don’t want to wake up one day to find out you can’t compete, you’re too old. You need to avoid that, and this week we took tangible steps to fulfill our overarching goal to become more reliant on our infrastructure and player development.”

Coincidentally, while the Dodgers were in the process of adding youth by way of prospects from the Miami Marlins and San Diego Padres, they simultaneously got older with respects to everyday starters next season.

At 31 years old, Howie Kendrick replaces Dee Gordon at second base, who is 26. The not-yet official trade for Jimmy Rollins replaces 30-year-old Hanley Ramirez with a 36-year-old shortstop; though the argument can certainly be made Rollins is more nimble and “youthful” than Ramirez.

Matt Kemp being dealt to the Padres landed the Dodgers Yasmani Grandal, 26, who conceivably will platoon in some capacity with A.J. Ellis behind the plate, and it opens the door for Pederson to take over in center with Yasiel Puig moving back to right field.

Though it may be in a different fashion than the last two seasons, the Dodgers remain in position to contend for a World Series next season while also gaining roster flexibility moving forward that had been largely absent.

    • In Florida, Friedman entrusted Joe Maddon with making his low-budget roster -- accenting young pitching and versatile position players -- work. Maddon is now in Chicago, at the wheel of an entirely different cruise ship, leaving Friedman to put his faith in the managerial acumen of Mattingly.

It's a shame, with all the hot air being blown up Friedman's ass about the moves so far, it all ends with DBB and how he uses it all down on the field. A gun with a lot of bullets to use, but a guy in charge who thinks it's a spear.
Wow...I know I'm not as giddy over the front office as the megaposters here are, but it makes you wonder how much ultimate real wisdom they have if Donnie's the guy they want in charge...

    from today's press conference...

Friedman: Moves make Dodgers "Highly Functional"
President of baseball operations discusses trading Kemp, acquiring Rollins
    by Ken Gurnick | MLB.com -- 32 minutes ago

LOS ANGELES -- Andrew Friedman on Friday explained why the Dodgers needed the extreme makeover they've just undergone, including the trade of popular outfielder Matt Kemp to the now-formidable Padres.

"It all gets back to us doing everything we could to mold the roster into a highly functional team, instead of a collection of talent," said Friedman, the president of baseball operations and architect of a flurry of moves that included Friday's confirmation of the acquisition of shortstop Jimmy Rollins and $1 million from the Phillies for Minor League pitchers Tom Windle and Zach Eflin.

Friedman twice used the words "highly functional" in describing the new roster, implying that the team he just broke up had 94 wins despite a degree of dysfunction that he's addressed by acquiring Rollins, second baseman Howie Kendrick, catcher Yasmani Grandal and pitchers Brandon McCarthy and Chris Hatcher in the past 10 days, with pitcher Brett Anderson a physical exam away from joining them.

Friedman, in his job only two months, said he understands how popular Kemp was with Dodgers fans.

"Because of how gifted he is offensively. We get it," Friedman said. "I have a lot of respect for what he can do in the batter's box, but you've got to give up talent to get talent, to put us in position to be a better team. Nothing has been done lightly."

Friedman was told he will be hated by fans if it doesn't work.

"Not any more than we'll hate ourselves," he said. "Look, all of us are focused on winning. The fans' passion here is tremendous and I look forward to experiencing the electricity in the building."

Friedman raved about Grandal, the key player the team received in return for Kemp. Grandal, who will share time behind the plate with A.J. Ellis, was acquired by the Padres from Cincinnati in 2011 by Josh Byrnes, who was then the San Diego general manager and now is the Dodgers' vice president of baseball operations.

Friedman said Grandal has power from both sides of the plate and is a master at pitch framing. He also dismissed concern about Grandal's 50-game suspension in November 2012 for violating MLB's Joint Drug Prevention and Treatment Program, assuring that extensive time was spent researching the character of all the added players.

While Kemp is gone, Friedman wouldn't commit to rookie Joc Pederson being the everyday center fielder, implying that he'll need to win the job in Spring Training.

"In Spring Training we'll assess that, we'll get a feel how he handles things and the discussions with the staff will be ongoing," he said.

Nor would Friedman commit to trading another outfielder, saying he was "open-minded," even though the club has tried to trade Andre Ethier and satisfy his desire to start.

Friedman said the many moves have made his club more balanced and lengthened the lineup, but he was careful as he tried to explain why he now has a pair of 30-something middle infielders, and more specifically, why he felt the Dodgers would be better with Kendrick at second base instead of Dee Gordon, five years younger with four years of salary control.

"They're both really good in different ways," Friedman said, explaining that the trade of Gordon, Dan Haren and Miguel Rojas provided the Dodgers' farm system with three prospects, in addition to top prospect Andrew Heaney, who was dealt to the Angels for Kendrick.

"The micro goal [a young roster] can be one thing, but you can't make every single decision with that in mind if you feel you're making a move that's not as good as you would make otherwise," Friedman said. "The overall theme and mindset is to intersperse young players and not get players on the back of 30-something on long-term contracts riding down the backside of their career. Jimmy is older by age, but his body doesn't show it."

Friedman said he is sure the club will be "significantly better defensively," but he "wasn't ready to say we won't be as good offensively. I need to spend more time on that. Our home run total may be less, but we have a very deep lineup."
