Even then, the amount of starting pitching coming into FA next year is insane.

If they can upgrade at catcher at all without giving up Kemp and keep that same lineup I'll be dancing in the streets.

Pretty unbelievable day if they pull this off.
Massive upgrade of the middle infield.

he gets it..he's just playing favorites.

and Greinke told Heyman that he's opting out..Heyman said that on the 1st day of coverage. that Greinke said he was gonna be watching Lester's and Scherzer's deals.

    it's official

    Dodgers Acquire Howie Kendrick
By Mark Polishuk [December 11, 2014 at 12:44am CST]

The Dodgers have announced that they’ve acquired second baseman Howie Kendrick from the Angels, for southpaw Andrew Heaney, who was just acquired by the Dodgers from the Marlins earlier today. No money is changing hands in the deal, so the Dodgers will pay all of the $9.5MM Kendrick is owed in 2015.

Kendrick replaces Dee Gordon at second base, as Gordon was part of the package that went to Miami for Heaney as part of this incredible day of transactions for the Dodgers. Kendrick represents both an offensive and defensive upgrade over Gordon, and the 31-year-old hit .293/.347/.397 over 674 PA last season.

Kendrick has been a subject of trade rumors for much of the offseason, with teams such as the Orioles, Yankees and Blue Jays all connected to the veteran second baseman at various times. In the end, however, Kendrick will move down the highway to Los Angeles’ other team. This isn’t the first time that Kendrick has been pursued by the Dodgers, as the two L.A. clubs discussed a trade in the summer of 2013.

Payroll was primarily the reason why the Halos were willing to move Kendrick or David Freese this offseason. Kendrick will earn $9.5MM in the last year of his contract, and getting that salary off the books will give the Angels some flexibility for further moves. The Angels have been aggressively looking for utility infielders, and presumably whomever they acquire will now be in line for some regular playing time alongside Grant Green at second base.

The Angels were said to be targeting young pitching for much of the offseason, and they’ve now landed one of the game’s top prospects in Heaney. The lefty was named both the Marlins’ top prospect and the #30 prospect in the sport by Baseball America in their 2014 preseason rankings. He has a 2.77 ERA, 9.1 K/9, and 3.85 K/BB rate over 259 2/3 minor league innings, and he threw 29 1/3 innings for Miami this season in his first taste of the bigs.

Heaney is 23 years and controllable through the 2020 season, and presumably he’ll get every opportunity to win a job in the Angels’ rotation. Jered Weaver, C.J. Wilson and Matt Shoemaker are the only starters guaranteed for jobs on Opening Day, as Garrett Richards may start the season on the DL. Heaney joins Tyler Skaggs, Nick Tropeano, Hector Santiago and Cory Rasmus in battling it out for rotation jobs in Spring Training.

Has anyone else here taken their heads out of the ether and done the math on this thing?

At the end of the day, they're paying: $2.5 MM + Gordon, $10MM + Haren and Heaney for the right to pay the full $9.5MM for one year of Kendrick from a team needing a salary dump...

Say what you want but neither Ned nor any self respecting Jew other than Friedman would have paid $22MM, an AS 2nd baseman, a serviceable SP and a top pitching prospect for Kendrick.

That, and they gave 4 years of > Wilson money to a guy no one was offering 3 to?

These nerd FUX are weak sauce at the negotiating table. I can't wait to see what happens when they square off with Boras.

Kendrick was not all the Dodgers got. Also got a reliever, a catcher who has impressed in the minors so far, and another IF prospect.

Look what they're paying. I can see it if they either hadn't given Heaney to the Angels or had to pay both Gordon and/or Haren but dayum, not too impressive from a bunch of what's supposed to be frugal Ivy leaguers.

paying to get the farm/bullpen pieces they covet and to get deals over and done with, so they can focus on heavier talks about bigger impact guys, my man..striking while the iron's hot. muscling in and damaging opposing team's plans. Lol the Yankees had their mind set on bringing McCarthy back..Angels were talking to others about Kendrick..Marlins were out there searching for deals. no time to waste.

and what's 22M anyway?..our weak hitting LF makes that next year. :snoring:

the nerds have been made to be frugal their whole careers thus far..that shit is evidently over and done with. it's get the job done time now.

I'm not dis satisfied with the on field product, just surprised they are taking it in the ass at the table, considering their pedigrees.

Now, all I want is for them to keep Hamels away from the G'nats and Cardinals (if they try to get him) one way or the other. Scherzer seems like craziness, IMO.

i see it differently..mostly the way explained above. Zaidi did not tell a lie when he said a lot of teams are playing the middle right now..it's not a complete buyer/sellers market right now..everybody's lookin to do a lil somethin and tinker with what they already have..everybody wants to haggle over this and that. this is the effect of watching the power-less Royals/Giants WS..everybody thinks they can make a run now by doin just a lil bit. Yankees are even looking to go the Royals' route. Lol

Some expensive FA pitchers still out there so we'll see how right Zaidi is.

the market can turn on a dime though and most likely will when more names start coming off the board..there are just too many options out there right now and too many teams that are wondering if they can be the " new Royals/Giants "..i mean look at the Pads tryin to do a lil somethin for Kemp. Lol and we know the Pads generally play well in the 2nd half of seasons..they believe. Lol

i mean for FO guys that couldn't spend for their whole careers, they're saying " fuck this market..we have the money..lets do work on these weaknesses and focus in on what we're gonna do with the big guys Kemp and Hamels. " Scherzer..it's all up to the Yankees for him. i mean he's Boras' big guy, and there are only like 2 or 3 teams that are gonna waste their time with Boras. the 160M dollar deal that he rejected from Detroit last year is probably still there for him.

I think Kendrick is a really good player, but was he worth a top 20 prospect in baseball??? I know it's essentially Gordon for Kendrick + prospects (if you want to think that way), but fact is we got a really really good chip in Heaney, who probably could have been used better otherwise?

and Kendrick is a free agent after 2015, again he's good, but is this the best way to allocate that chip?

idk I hope we improve in other areas too, so this won't be on my mind as much. I'm torn on this deal.

Just realized that we just upgraded defensively so dramatically that we went from having a negative 12 defensive runs saved to a plus 23
I was torn too until I thought about it a little and realized that these guys are pretty savvy based upon last nights events but time will tell.

Rather have kept Heaney I think.

And if that crap from SD is all we get for Kemp keep him and wait. Matt will have a huge year.
