Players of note: AAA: Bellinger, Verdugo, Calhoun, Oaks and Rhame AA: Yaisel Sierra, Edwin Rios, Kyle Garlick, Jacob Scavuzzo, Johan Mieses, Matt Beaty A+: Mitchell White, Walker Buehler, Dennis Santana, Caleb Ferguson, Dean Kremer, Will Smith, Erick Mejia, Drew Jackson, DJ Peters, Yusniel Diaz and Omar Estevez. A: Jordan Sheffield, Imani Abdullah, Dustin May, AJ Alexy, Keibert Ruiz, Cody Thomas, Brendon Davis Extended spring: Urias and Alvarez.
As much as I hated the extended Spring, the best thing to come out of it was definitely the extra time that prospects got with the big club. - Peters got a ton of time in, which should raise some eyebrows. Is a breakout candidate. - Calhoun did not look like a hot mess in the field and good lord that bat speed. - Verdugo went down early, which was a bummer, but he looked good both with the club and in the WBC. - Mitchell White was IMPRESSIVE. - Meija looked solid with the glove and is fast.
Yikes, the Quakes are going to have a very interesting rotation, especially when Alvarez comes up as that is rumored to be where he is heading after ext ST. AAA is going to have a fun 2,3,4,5,6 with Verdugo, Belli, Calhoun, Thompson and Segedin. AA is a, "can any of these guys take the next step?" There is huge potential there, but they're pretty much all at a stage of, either you got it or you don't. LoA has some fun breakout candidates, also a bit surprised to see Sheffield there, though it may not be for long. Every team in the system has some serious intrigue beyond just one guy.
beginning to remind me of the good old days when our farm system was the envy of every other organization
Lots of Padre ridicule...Like everywhere, man. I hope we don't pay for it by karma...Hope it's the Giants that do. Or Rox. Or AZ.
This isn't even a joke, The Dodgers 6-10 starters and the OKC roster would be better than this Padres team.
It could just be that their is no room in the rotation and they want him starting, assume that White, Santana, Kremer, Buehler (expected to join the team next week) and Ferguson is the rotation in Rancho, eventually Alvarez will displace one of them, just no room.

I feel like some of the guys in Hi-A will need to be piggy-backed anyway off the bat, but that is a good point. It sounds like the only reason Sheffield is starting right now is to get a better feel for all of his pitches. Doesn't appear that he is destined for a big league rotation unless something big clicks. Another reason for the surprise is that there were some folks around baseball that felt he could be MLB bullpen ready for the stretch run. Figured they may want him to get some more competitive innings early on in the event he rises quickly.
Very possible, they did that with Ethan Martin and Chris Withrow back in the day, different regime, but nonetheless.
If everything they are saying about Buehler and White are true, those guys may not even be in Rancho for very long. Obviously they would have to dominate, but in the event they are, I would guess that the org would want them in Tulsa pretty quick based on their age.
