I find the amount of earned runs a starting pitcher gives up a pretty big deal despite what all the sabermetric nerds and their fancy stats think. Especially ones who have logged as much time as McCarthy has during his career. It's a good indicator of well, how many runs they'll give up in the future, which is all that really matters.
