Is your old data your 'precious" or are new posts the only thing that really matters?

Allow me to enlighten you all about an event
    that occurred several years ago
    Circa November 2011
    DSP was thriving
    (I’m serious)
    Matt Kemp was a superstar
Rubby De La Rosa was the future
The dodgers section was extremely active
The Yankees section was twice as active as the Dodgers section
    And then
    ...
    The purge happened
PSD received an influx of new members for the interim
    And a week later
    when DSP went live again
Only a handful of posters returned
    The once popular Yankees section
    One that dominated DSP
Started to resemble the cardinals section
    More than it’s past glory
    The dodgers section
Although appearing to have survived the purge
Lost a lot of quality members
7 years later DSP is still struggling
There’s much bigger problems than fixing a few bugs
    Perhaps a purge is necessary
But not the purge you all are suggesting
    But maybe one
That erases users who push people away due to their toxic beliefs and behaviors
If you had to ask yourself if I’m talking about you
    Then, yes, I mean you
    ...
    differences aside,
The pros of wiping the server clean just aren’t worth the cons
If you want to have a second
Or is it a third now?
    Exodus of users
Then go ahead and wipe the server clean
    But like I said earlier
I value the quality and time put into posts over the years
And by posts over the years
    I mean
    My four posts

if we have you to "enlighten" us
why do we need to hold onto the excess baggage

Some people like the old posts.
Theres a lot of really funny shit in the old posts.
It's also interesting to see how personas/personalities evolve.

Plus if you blow it all away, everyone has to re-register (some won't bother). And everyone will have to reconfigure their profile settings and preferences. It's a PITA and it will drive soeme users away.

There's also a ton of backend admin work to set the user groups to work reasonably. XF has a bunch of really great features, but the user/group management isn't one of them. It's a balance between allowing people to join the site and contribute right away, and keeping spammers/bots from flooding the site, for example. I'd hate to have to redo all that work.

It's litterally costs nothing to keep the old history, while removing it comes with a bunch of hassle.

    There are ways.
I actually don't mind losing old members who are not active.
Active members won't have issue reregistering. And there are ways to go around that as well.
Especially if we allow members to just log in with their google/facebook accounts.
The usergroups system has been vastly simplified.
And there are also good solutions for those old problems we used to have.
Make most active members into mods. Have open enrollment that allows you to post right away without anyone approving your account.
Except that your posts are moderated until you have proven you are not a bot.
Only seen by moderators which are all the active old timers who will be able to moderate the new guy and delete spam if its spam.

Yeah @Sauce makes good points but it's scary thinking about his stalking us AND PAYING ATTENTION to this DSP drivel without ever posting .. for years. (stop watching me man, stop it)

My biggest single takeaway is that the Mods and old timers at DSP have been whining and bkitching for years about how to gather more users and the single event that pushes people away fastest and most completely.... rebooting the server.
The second being that we all act like right wing Fox nazi's when new people post ordinary points of view.
The third, of course, being that @irish is an incorrigibly perverted lech. (Of course one could argue that last one is actually somewhat endearing)

So do we want more users or fewer users?

Then you're damned grateful that we don't live in a binary world ehh*?

Seriously, thinking like it's always "either/or" is the greater loss grasshopper.

Hey @rube pitch in a "tri-lateral thinking" assist here will you?

I don't come here as often as most, but I feel you should do whatever to make the site the most effective.

    I agree.
Nice to see you back around Ray.

The idea is to recreate the site with an even more simplified style than this.
Something that is more than just mobile friendly but geared towards mobile.
As well as with a more focus on the Dodgers as the main page and not the biggest sub page on the main page as it is now.
Part of the efficiency factor is trimming the fat of old posts and threads that are not relevant anymore.
The past is the past and while we all have funny or interesting posts from the past I feel we can make more interesting and funny posts in the future.
I don't think it is a great idea to cling to the past in general and I find websites that have a set shelf life for content create more of it that is relevant.
I would be for an auto pruning feature that would close all threads from the previous season and put them in 'read only' or 'low-fi' mode.

While some members continue to think this site is about bringing in more people or making money it is not. It is about the members that are active. Not about past members or future members. What comes comes and it is not something anyone should worry about.
Yet I expect that these changes will bring about more usage by those here and increase the quality of our content which is the only true way I wish to attract both old and new members.
